Owing to the presence of the collars 36, it will be clear that the screw 34 is not adapted for longitudinal movement but only for rotary movement. Owing to the presence of the key and keyway 24 and 26, the slide 22 is adapted only for movement along the column or post I6 and will have no tendency to turn about the latter and so there will be no undue tendency for binding of the slide with respect to the screw 34.
At its forward side, slide 22 includes an extension 39 through which is threaded a clamping screw 46 having a head 4I rotatably secured to its lower end. For this purpose, a pin 42 may secure the head and the lower portion of the screw shank together for movement of the head with the screw shank when the latter is moved vertically. However, as the head 4I is brought into engagement with the work, the screw shank may be rotated to further clamp the head against the work without imparting turning movement to the head.
In the forward face of its lower portion 43, the slide body 23 is provided with a groove 44 and at the upper and lower sides of said groove with flat faces 45 and 46. The groove 44 and the faces 45 and 46 are designed for the mounting of different constructions of parts .for cooperation with different constructions or sizes of dies.
In Figs. 1-3, the part so mounted is generally designated 41 and the same is in the nature of a jaw designed to cooperate with the clamping screw 46. Such part 41 is somewhat L-shaped in transverse section or in side elevation and the same includes a rigid arm or jaw 48 shown as arranged horizontally and a second arm or ja-w 49 arranged vertically.
This latter jaw is provided with a rib 50 adapted to be received in the groove 44 above described and with upper and lower flat faces at the upper and lower sides of said rib and designed to engage the flat faces 45 and 46 of the body 23. A suitable number of screws l passing through the arm 49 and into the body 23 at opposite sides of the passage 21 serve to secure the part 41 to the body 23 for movement therewith- On its upper surface, the jaw 48 of the part 41 may be provided with a wearplate 52.
When using the device of Figs. 1-3, the die set, the punch holder and bed of which is to be separated, is disposed on the upper side of the table I3 in at least approximately centered relation with the post or column I6. Then a pair of similar clamps 53 and 54 are positioned on studs 55 and 56 which are threaded into selected of the tapped holes I4. As shown in Fig. l, these studs pass through slots 51 in the clamps whereby the clamps may be adjusted inwardly and outwardly on the studs within the limits provided by the lengths of the slots. Nuts 58 on the upper ends of the studs prevent movement of the clamps off the studs and they are preferably tightened down sufficient to cause the clamps to bear against the upper side of the die bed, as for example, the die bed 56.
Thus, it will be understood that the clamps actually extend over the die bed and under the punch holder as into the space normally separating such parts due to the presence of bushings 60. Thereafter, clamping screws 6I and 62, threaded through the outer end portions of the clamps 53 and 54, respectively, are tightened so as to raise upwardly on the outer ends of the clamps and thereby exert a downward force on the die bed 559 through the inner portions of the clamps. As shown, the screws 6I and `62 have their lower ends disposed in buttons 63 which actually bear against the upper surface of the table I3. With the clamps 53 and 54 tightened, it will be appreciated that the entire die set is positioned since the punch holder 64 of the set is on such bed and on the guide pins 65 of the set.
At this time, the jaw-like portion 48 of the part 41 is also entered between the bed and the punch holder of the die set and the screw 40 is tightened to clamp a portion of the punch holder `64 against such jaw 48. When this has been successfully accomplished, the operator merely rotates the crank 38 moving the slide 22 upwardly on the column or post I6. As this is done there is a straight upward movement of the whole slide and the slide being clamped to the punch holder, the latter is shifted vertically along and removed from the guide pins 65.
Heretofore, punchholders and the beds of die sets have usually been separated with a great deal of physical effort. The tool maker pries and taps at the parts until he gets them separated. With my present means, they are easily separated with a minimum of eifort and with my present means, the punch holder may be reapplied by lining up the bushed openings with the guide pins 65 and operating the crank in the reverse direction to lower the punch holder on the pins. In fact, in some instances, the machine may be used to test tools which have been applied to the parts of the die set.
Referring now to Figs. 4 and 5, the machine as there shown is essentially the machine previously described and the same parts have been given the same reference characters and will not be again described. The modification resides in the employment of a gripping device generally designated 65 for gripping the shank of the punch holder and this device 66 is substituted for the part 41 of Figs. 1-3.
Essentially, the gripper 66 comprises a generally L-shaped body including a rigid horizontal arm Y 61 and a vertical arm 68, the latter being provided on its rear face with a rib 69 and flat surfaces above and below said rib. Rib 69 is received in the groove 44 in the body 23 of the slide and the flats at opposite sides of the rib engage flats 45 and 46 of the slide. securing the .part 41 to the slide may also be used for securing the part or gripper 66 to the slide.
In its forward face or edge, the arm 61 of the gripper is provided with an arcuate notch or recess 'i6 and a separate clamping element 1I is provided with -a similar notch or recess 12. Clamping screws 13 pass through the part 1I and are threaded into the forward edge of the arm 61.f
When using the structure of the modification (see Figs. 4 and 5) the bed 14 of the die set is clamped to the upper surface of the table I3 as previously described and the die set is located to dispose the shank 'l5 of the punch holder 16 in alignment with the opening provided by the notches 10 and 12. Thereafter, the slide 22 is lowered until the shank 'i5 is located in the opening provided by the notches 16 and 12 and the screws 13 are tightened whereby the shank 15 of the punch holder is gripped, as illustrated in Fig. 4.
The operation of the modified structure is the same as that previously described and as the bed 14 is clamped in place and the shank gripping device 66 is clamped to the shank 15 of the punch holder, the crank 38 is operated to rotate the screw 34 to draw the punch holder upwardly oif the guide pins 65 or lower it onto the guide pins The screws 5I used for' 5 depending on the direction in which the crank is moved.
1n the structure of the modication, the clamping screw 4U is not employed. However, the modification will serve to illustrate that my machine is adapted for the handling of different types of die sets in some of which the punch holder is not provided with the shank, the same as or equivalent to the shank 15 of the die set of Figs. 4 and 5. Thus, with my disclosed device, means are provided for clamping any construction of die bed to the machine base and any construction of punch holder to the slide 22. Where the shank is grasped, the punch holder is pulled upwardly and where the jaw 48 enters under the punch holder the latter is lifted.
Having thus set forth the nature of my invention, what I claim is:
In a die set separator, a base adapted to support a die set, means to secure the bed of a die set against the upper side of said base, a vertical post extending above said base, a slide on and movable along said post and extending inwardly therefrom over said base, said slide including an inwardly extending arm portion adapted to be disposed at the underside of the punch holder of a die set on said base, a screw clamp on said slide above said arm and adjustable vertically toward and from said arm and when adjusted toward the same adapted to engage the upper side of such a 6 punch holder wthereby the latter is clamped between said jaw and screw clamp for upward and downward movement with said slide from and toward the bed of the die set, and a screw rotatively mounted on the inward side of said vertical post, including manually operative means. secured to the upper end of said screw for rotation thereof, `and a nut secured to said slide through which said screw is threaded, whereby said slide may be raised or lowered by rotation of said screw.
