(Cl. 45-121) This invention relates to music stands, designed to hold sheet music for use by musicians, the object thereof being to provide a stand which can be readily adjusted up and down for height to accommodate the particular musician, whether standing or sitting, and which can be readily taken apart and compactly folded to occupy a minimum of space when not in use, whereby when folded, it can be carried about by a musician in a bag, or in a small box or case approximately sixteen inches long and four inches in diameter, in addition to weighing only about three and one-half pounds.

Another object of the invention is to provide a music stand of simple and novel construction which can be very economically produced, and in which the parts may be readily assembled or folded as desired, for use, and for transportation,

the device comprising a few simple parts capable of expeditious and economical manufacture.

Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Figure 1 is a front elevation of a music stand constructed in accordance with the invention;

Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof;

Figure 3 is a, bottom view of the base member of the stand;

Figure 4 is a sectional view taken transversely to the plane of the head member which supports the music rack proper, parts being broken away;

Figure 6 is a sectional elevation of a fragmentary portion of the base member and stand attached thereto;

Figure 8 is a detail sectional view showing the manner of connecting the sections of the stand forming the upright or standard thereof.

Referring to the drawings in detail, in which like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the music stand is shown as comprising a base l upon which is supported an upright or standard I I and upon the top of the latter, a music rack l2 designed to support the sheet music. The base I0 is designed to give steady support to the stand upon the floor, and comprises a frusto-conical heavy base member or casting I 3 the lower portion M of which is cylindrical and the top of which is provided with a reduced upright shank l5, which may be externally threaded and forms an annular shoulder or seat I6 therearound at the top of the casting I3. The-bottom of the base member or casting I3 is hollowed-out as indicated at I! and provided with three equidistantly spaced webs l8 forming a spider in the form of vertical partitions or walls therein terminating in a central hub or sleeve l9 having a downwardly opening threaded socket 20 at the bottom and center thereof. The walls or webs l8 are each provided with a transverse notch 2| at the bottom near the cylindrical wall I4 and all equi-distantly spaced from the center or hub. In addition, the circular portion I4 is provided with notches 22 on each side of a web or wall [8 and thus two between each pair of webs, with notch or recess 22 diverging from said walls and from each other, the bases of the notches 2| and 22 being concaved or formed on concentric circles. The notches 2| take a ring 23 of circular cross-section, the ring being round and preferably formed of wire or the like. The ring 23 may be split or of integral formation, with the ends joined together or otherwise, to fit in the base member or casting l3 within the notches 2| in which it is snapped or frictionally held, in which event it may be a spring ring. Pivotally mounted on the ring 23 are a plurality of rebent or substantially U-shaped supporting feet or legs 24, the same having rounded or closed outer ends 25 and legs 26 forming the sides thereof, divergent outwardly and convergent inwardly, to pivotally mount the inner ends thereof or terminals 21 upon the ring 23 forming an annulus held in the notches 2|, by means of transverse holes or notches 28 formed in said ends or terminals 21. In this manner, the feet or legs 24 can swing outwardly into the notches or grooves 22 on the annulus or ring 23 to outwardly inclinedpositions when spread apart to firmly support the stand on the floor. This is made possible by retaining means, consisting and providing a bottom circular recess 29 in the bottom face of the base member or casting l3 in which a circular plate or disc 30 is seated and provided if desired, with notches aligning with the notches or recesses 22 as indicated at 3|, to receive the sides or legs 26 therethrough or permit the same to be folded inwardly in the same direction toward each other for compact fold- 80 and having its peripheral bent at a slight angle downwardly as indicated at 33, to form a lip on which the legs rest and which press up against the legs, to permit the latter to extend downwardly and outwardly in an inclined or divergent position to support the stand at the closed ends or loops thereof which contact with the floor at 25. 3. A music stand comprising a base member, an extensible standard detachably connected to said base member, a head member angularly adjustable on the upper end of the standard, said base and head members comprising circular body portions having peripheral notches extending radially, a retaining ring mounted therein, looped members having side portions pivoted to said ring and engageable in the notches in outwardly extending positions, said looped members extending outwardly and downwardly at the base and in the same plane at the head, and plates secured to the base member against the looped members to retain the same in supporting position and adapted to be removed for collapsing the same in folded position, and a music sheet retaining member on one of the looped members of the h ad member.

4. A music stand comprising a base including a casting having a hollowed-out portion forming radial webs with notches in the bottom edges thereof and forming a lateral wall with notches in the edges thereof, a ring seated in the notches of the webs, U-shaped legs having side portions pivoted on the ring and engaged in the notches and swingable on the ring toward each other to collapsed position, a retaining plate secured to the bottom of the base member and having notches receiving sides of the legs therein in inclined positions in supporting relation, a second plate over the first plate having an angularly bent portion retaining said legs in supporting position and removable to permit collapsing thereof, a sectional standard supported on the base including a lower tubular section detachably connected to the base at the center of the top thereof, a second section removably attached in the upper end of the lower section, a rod telescoping in the upper end of the second section and adapted to be clamped in a, standard or collapsed position, a coupling removably mounted on the upper end of the upper section and hav-- ing a slot therein, a plate mounted to turn in said slot, means to hold said plate in a difierent angularly adjustable position, a head member formed similarly to the base member in a reversed position and attached to the plate pivoted to the coupling, arms similar to said legs and a notched plate secured to the top of the head member and having notches through which said arms are adapted to swing upwardly toward each other in collapsed position, and an inverted U-shaped member carried by one of the arms between the sides thereof to support music sheets thereon in inclined positions at the lower edges of the sheets.

5. A music stand comprising a base including a casting having a hollowed-out portion forming radial webs with notches in the bottom edges thereof and forming a lateral wall with notches in the edges thereof, a ring seated in the notches of the webs, U-shaped legs having side portions pivoted on the ring and engaged in the notches and swingable on the ring toward each other to collapsed position, a retaining plate secured to the bottom of the base member and having notches receiving sides of the legs therein in inclined positions in supporting relation, a second plate over the firs-t plate having an angularly bent portion retaining said legs in supporting position and removable to permit collapsing thereof, a sectional standard supported on the base including a lower tubular section detachably connected to the base at the center of the top thereof, a second section removably attached in the upper end of the lower section, a rod telescoping in the upper end of the second section and adapted to be clamped in a standard or collapsed position, a coupling removably mounted on the upper end of the upper section and having a slot therein, a plate mounted to turn in said slot, means to hold said plate in a different angularly adjustable position, a head member formed similarly to the base member in a reversed position and attached to the plate pivoted to the coupling, arms similar to said legs and a notched plate secured to the top of the head member and having notches through which said arms are adapted to swing upwardly toward each other in collapsed position, a page retaining member on one of said arms to support music sheets on the arms in different angularly adjusted positions of the rack of the head member, said arms all being in the same plane to form a flat supporting surface.

6. The combination of claim 1 wherein, a spider web is secured in said circular body portions and said radial notches are located therein.
