Description

(ModeL) L. M. SUMMERPIELD.
SHIRT.
No. 250,687. Patented Dec. 13,1881.
UNITED STATES PATENT Fries.
LOUIS M. SUMMERFIELD, OF MA'ITOON, ILLINOIS.
SHIRT.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 250,687, dated December 13, 1881.
Application filed August 5, 1881.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS M. SUMMER- FIELD, of the city of Mattoon, State of Illinois, have invented a new, novel, and useful Improvement in Shirts; and I do declare the following is a fuli, clear, and exact description of the same, which will enable others skilled in the art pertaining thereto to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a double or duplex bosomed shirt presenting an equal fit and appearance upon either front or back of the person wearing the same, and so cut and put together that either side of the shirt can be worn to the front, thereby supplyiug a want long felt.
The invention consists in so cutting the front and back body of a shirt, with the bosom and shoulder pieces or stays and sleeves, that when puttogether, as hereinafter described, they wil form a perfect-fitting shirt with two complete bosoms, one of which is closed or solid, and the other an open bosom, as more particularly described in accompanying drawings.
Figure I represents a front view of shirt, letter A beingthe collar-band, whiehis so cut as to bring the collar stud or button in the same position on the neck of the person wearing the shirt, either side being worn to the front, and so arranged as to set out from the neck on the upper part of band, thereby preventing the collar from sliding up or down on the neck of the wearer. B is the shoulder brace or stay for the purpose of binding the two sides or front and back together on the shoulder and dispensing with the'ordinary yoke, and extending from under the collar- (ModeL) band A to tip of the shoulder at B. 0 represents the form of sleeve cut with only one seam and so placed that the open part of bottom or the button of wristband comes under the middle part of wrist on the under side, and so arranged that it will present the same appearance with the shirt worn either side to the front. D represents the manner of 'puttin g in the sleeves so as to avoid all gathering or puckering of the fullness. G is the bosom of front side or ordinary bosom. E E in Figs. I and. II show the two main parts of shirt, being front and back.
Fig. II, A represents the band reversed from A in Fig. I. F shows where the fly or flap of the under part of plait I on bosom H starts from and extends down with the. dotte line to the band at bottom of bosom H. H represents an open bosom, but so arranged with fly or flap I that it presents the appearance of an ordinarybosoin concealing the lower flap or fly which is used for the purpose of fastening shirt together with buttons or studs, thereby presenting a complete shirt with the two bosoms, as shown.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure, is
An improvement in shirts, consisting of the combination of the two sides E E with the closed and open bosom H and G, the fly or flap F, attached thereto, with the collar-band A and shoulder pieces or stays B and sleeve 0, as constructed and arranged for the purposes herein set forth.
Mattoon, July 30, 1881.
LOUIS M. SUMMERFIELD.
