The present invention relates to ironing cord holders and is concerned more particularly with the provision of an ironing cord holder in which an adjustable resilient cord holding rod is provided for connection to the ironing cord.

In general the ironing cord holder is designed for eflicient, low cost production with a, minimum of parts and to incorporate a folding construction of the cord holding rod so that it can be placed parallel to the ironing board for storage purposes or in an upright position for cooperation with an ironing cord.

The above and other objects of the invention are attained in the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the ironing cord holder as mounted on an ironing board and with an ironing cord engaged with the holder.

Figure 2 is a perspective view of the ironing cord holder on an ironing board in the collapsed or folded position for storage.

Figure 3 is a perspective enlarged view of the ironing cord holder.

Figure 4 is a sectional view taken as indicated by the line 4-4 in Figure 3.

Referring to the drawings, the holder includes a base ID from which extends a resilient cordholding rod I I having a bent upper end at Ila to provide a V-shaped notch in which the ironing cord can be wedged, as illustrated in Figure 1.

The base I comprises a pressed metal piece including a central recessed body portion I2 having side flanges I3 extending outwardly from inclined side walls I4 thereof. The side flanges have suitable holes so that the base can be attached by suitable screws to an ironing board. The upright opposite end walls I5 of the base are each apertured at I6 to provide a pivotal mounting for one arm of the L-shaped resilient rod II so that the rod can pivot between the upright position shown in Figure l and the folded or storage position shown in Figure 2. As seen in Figure 4, a spring I'l surrounds the rod I I and is interposed between one of the side walls I5 and a washer I8 on the rod. In this way the upright portion of the rod is springurged against the adjacent side wall I5. The rod II may be suitably flattened to hold the washer I8. The side wall I5 seen in Figure 3 is provided with rod latching means in the form of a pair of spaced apart struck-out ears I9 between which the rod II is received in the upright position thereof. This wall I5 is also provided with a second rod latching means comprisin an extrusion 20 of rounded contour which is spaced with reference to the bottom of the base I0 and the pivotal aperture I6 of the rod II so that the rod II snaps past the button 26 in its folded position and will be releasably retained in such position when the ironing cord holder is not in use.

When the ironing cord holder is to be used, as viewed in Figure 1, with the rod II in its up right position, the ironing cord 2| is wedged into the V-shaped opening provided by the bent upper end Ila of the rod II. Thus the rod II will bend as the iron moves back and forth, at all times maintaining the cord 2| above the material being ironed and out of the way of the person ironing or any child in the room. It will be noted that the design of the holder lends itself also to economical production.

While I have shown and described certain preferred embodiments of the invention, it is apparent that the invention is capable of variation and modification from the forms shown so that its scope should be limited only by the scope of the claims appended hereto.

I claim:

1. An ironing cord holder comprising a base having a recessed central portion surrounded by side walls, one of said side walls having a pair of spaced apart ears, said one side wall also having an extrusion adjacent said ears, and a resilient generally L-shaped rod pivotally mounted in said base and spring urged toward said one wall to engage between said ears in the upright position thereof and to be latched by said extrusion in the inactive position thereof.

2. An ironing cord holder comprising a base having flanges for attachment to an ironing board and a raised central portion spaced from said flanges by the side walls of the base, an opposite pair of said walls of said base being apertured, an L-shaped rod pivotally mounted in the apertures of said opposite side walls, a spring within said base for urging the upright portion of said rod against said base, and integrally formed latch elements on said base for releasably latching said rod in both an upright position and a down position.
