In vertical printing machines such as, for example, the Miehle type press, after the type is set up on the machine, it will be found that due to variations in the height of the type the first impression run off will be irregularly printed with weak spots thereon where thetype was too low. In order to eliminate such weak spots in subsequent impressions the following procedure known as make-ready is normally followed.
After the first impression is made, the sheet of paper bearing the same, before being removed from the press, is first stabbed or marked, with such marking passing through such sheet and the layers of packing clamped about the rotatable printing press cylinder. This mark is made in order that such sheet may be restored to its original position with respect to the type. The sheet is thereupon removed from the press and held up to the light so that the weak spots may readily be seen, and such weak spots are outlined on the reverse side or back of the printed sheet and thereupon built up by pasting layers of tissue paper thereon.
The sheet after having been made ready as above described, is thereupon positioned between two successive layers of the packing in alignment with the indexing mark previously made and then affixed. to the upper face of one of said layers, and the layers of packing with the sheet therebetween are thereupon clamped around the printing press cylinder and a second impression run off.
Although the tissue paper pasted on the sheet bearing the first impression will build up the packng so that the second impression will be clearer, it is still likely to have some weak spots and a second and perhaps a third or fourth make-ready operation may be required.
In such subsequent "make-ready operations, the built up sheet having the first impression thereon already afiixed to one of the layers of packing is used. To this end, the press is opened and the layers of packing unloosened at one end from the cylinder and folded over so that the layer of packing with the built up sheet thereon is exposed. This layer of packing hangs downwardly from the cylinder with the built up sheet on the face thereof. The operator thereupon pastes additional pieces of tissue on this sheet as required to again build up the weak spots indicated on the sheets with the second impression printed thereon.
Where in order to perform the second makeready operation the operator must handle the flexible layer of packing hanging down from the cylinder and paste the tissue paper on the original built up sheet thereon, this operation is tiring and time consuming as the operator must stoop to reach the sheet and also as no firm support is provided against which the layer of packing and sheet thereon may be pressed, it will crumple and must be held by placing one hand .behind the area being made ready.
It is accordingly among the objects of my invention to provide a device that may readily be applied as an attachment of or accessory to a vertical printing press of the above type, quickly, without the need for tools, special brackets, braces, screws or other extraneous attaching means, that does not require the slightest redesign or modification of the printing press, yet may be securely though removably affixed there- .to to provide a'firm support for a layer of packing having a sheet thereon to be made ready, that will support such layer and the sheet thereon so that the latter may be worked on by the operator without requiring him to stoop or bend, that is light in weight, inexpensive, has but few parts none of which are fragile or likely to become out of order and that is durable and requires no maintenance or repair.
According to the invention, these obiects are accomplished by the arrangement and combination of elements hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings which show one of various possible embodiments of the several features of the invention.

Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional view on a larger scale, taken along line 22 of Fig. 1 and,
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device.
Referring now to the drawings, in Fig. 1 the cylinder l l of a Miehle vertical press is shown as well as the frame i2 which mounts the type 13. The cylinder II has means thereon (not shown) securely yet removably to hold the layers of paper P which form the packing so as to girdle the circumference of said cylinder. Each of the ends Id of the cylinder II has a plurality of radially arranged openings i5 therein, transversely aligned across the length of the cylinder and which in nomal use of the press are to receive a rod (not shown) to permit manual rotation of the cylinder.
The construction thus far described is conventional and is not per se claimed herein.
A substantially rectangular table It is provided of length less than that of the cylinder and which may be of wood, metal or other rigid material. A pair of substantially L-shaped angle members I? are provided, the horizontal legs [8 of which are aligned respectively with the side edges 59 of the table, preferably extending slightly beyond the front edge 2! thereof and afiixed to such table as by nuts and bolts 22.
The upright leg '23 of the angle member I! is desirably inclined slightly forward as shown, and has a laterally extending pin 24 affixed at one end as by heading over at 24' against the leg 23 and extending outwardly therefrom at right angles thereto. Pins 24 have diameters slightly less than that of the openings in the ends 14 of the cylinder and the distance between pins 24 is the same as the distance between the transversely aligned openings at each end Id of the cylinder.
To use the table after the second impression has been made and the sheet S bearing the first impression afiixed to one of the layers of packing as above described, the press is opened. The layers of packing are loosened from the cylinder I i so that they are only afiixed thereto at one end as at l l and arranged with the layers of packing 25 immediately below the layer 25 with the sheet S afixed thereon hanging downwardly from the cylinder, and the layers of packing 21 above layer 125 resting on the surface of the cylinder II.
The table It is thereupon positioned with respect to the cylinder ll so that its front edge 2| is parallel thereto and pins 24 are inserted respectively into the aligned openings i5 in the ends M of the cylinder.
With the table so mounted, the weight thereof will securely yet removably hold it in place and the layer of packing 25 is thereupon folded over to rest on the table. As the horizontal legs l8 extend slightly beyond the front edge 2| of the table, a space 3!] will be provided between such edge 2! and the cylinder which will provide room for the layers of packing P.
Inasmuch as the table 16 which is approximately waist high affords a firm or rigid base for the layer 25, it is a relatively simple matter for the operator to paste additional pieces of tissue on the sheet S in the areas indicated on the second impression which have weak spots thereon. As the operator can press on the table while pasting the tissue paper on the sheet S, the tissue paper will adhere firmly to such sheet S with no chance of loosening which might cause it to shift and prevent accurate filling of the weak spots.
After the sheet S on the layer 25 has again been made-ready, the table 16 may readily be removed by merely pulling it outward to withdraw pins 24 from openings I 5. The layers of packing P may thereupon be aflixed to the cylinder in conventional manner and the press closed so that. subsequent impressions may be made.
The operation may be repeated one or more times if the imprint is not sufiiciently uniform after the first "make-ready operation.
By the use of the table above described, the speed and convenience of performing the makeready operation is greatly enhanced and as the table maybe attached to the vertical press without requiring modification thereof it would not add to the cost of the machine itself.
As many changes could be made in the above construction, and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope of the claims, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a vertical printing press of the type having a transverse cylinder thereon with a plurality of radially arranged openings therein at each end thereof transversely aligned thereacross; the combination therewith of a table, and means on said table coacting with a pair of transversely aligned openings in such cylinder removably to aiiix said table thereto to extend transversely thereacross and laterally outward therefrom.
2. In a vertical printing press of the type having a transverse cylinder thereon with a plurality of radially arranged openings therein at each end thereof transversely aligned thereacross; the combination therewith of a substantially rectangular table, a pair of parallel pins, one near each corner of said table along one edge thereof and extending at right angles thereto beyond said edge, having a diameter slightly less than the diameter of the openings in such cylinder, said pins being spaced a distance equal to the distance between pairs of transversely aligned openings in such cylinder, whereby when said pins are inserted respectively into one of said pairs of aligned openings, said table will extend transversely across such cylinder and laterally outward therefrom.
3. In a vertical printing press of the type having a transverse cylinder thereon with a plurality of radially arranged openings therein at each end thereof transversely aligned thereacross; the combination therewith of a substantially rectangular table, a pair of substantially L-shaped angle members each having a horizontal leg and an upright leg, said horizontal legs being affixed respectively at each corner of said table along the side edges thereof with said upright legs being all respectively positioned adjacent the front edge of said table, a pair of parallel pins afiixed respectively to each of said upright legs and extending substantially at right angles thereto beyond said front edge of said table, said pins each having a diameter slightly less than the diameter of the openings in such cylinder, said pins being spaced a distance equal to the distance between pairs of transversely aligned openings in such cylinder, whereby when said pins are inserted respectively into one of said pairs of aligned openings said table will extend transversely across such cylinder and laterally forward therefrom.
4. The combination set forth in claim 3 in which said horizontal legs extend slightly beyond the front edge of said table.
