J. Application November 1, 1946, Serial No. 707,300
1 Claim. (CL 281-8) The present invention relates to novel and useful improvements in a desk calendar pad and more specifically pertains to an accessory for a desk providing an annual calendar and a memorandum pad in roll form, for conveniently presenting calendar data together with a memorandum pad surface for each of the days in a year in chronological sequence.
The principal objects of my invention reside in providing a desk calendar pad of a simplified and inexpensive construction for dispensing a continuous roll of individual calendar date sheets and memorandum pad surfaces; in providing an improved calendar web guiding surface arrangement; in providingnovel means for conveniently and releasably supporting interchangeable annual calendar sheets therein; in arranging a novel and satisfactory mechanism for winding and. unwinding simultaneously the dispensing and storage rolls of a calendar; and in arranging in convenient form a desk calendar instrument which provides with an annular strip type of calendar adequate arrangement for making memorandum notes.
These, together with various ancillary objects of the invention which will later become apparcut as the following description proceeds, are realized by my invention, one embodiment of which has been illustrated by way of example only in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a top plan view oi. the device;
Figure 2 is a central longitudinal vertical sectional view being taken substantially upon the section line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view being taken substantially upon the line 3--3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a transverse vertical sectional view being taken substantially upon the line 4-4 of Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through one of the rolls of the invention:
Figure 6 is a fragmentary view in top plan of a portion of the calendar web;
Figure 7 is a perspective view of a roll retaining elementin accordance with-my invention;
Figure 8 is an end elevation from one side of a roll of the invention; and,
Figure 9 is an end elevation from the other side of a roll of the invention. f
Reference is now made more specifically to the attached drawings, wherein like numerals indicate similar parts throughoutthe several views and wherein I 0 designates a casing which is provided with a sloping top portion or top wall I2 and with side walls l4 and IS, the bottom of said casing being open as shown clearly in Figures 2 and 4. As seen in Figure 2, the top wall I2 is inclined or sloping relative to the two end walls of the device, and transversely across the same and adjacent its lower edge, is provided with a semi-circular groove or recess l8 constituting a convenient means for holding a pencil, pen or the like.
As shown more clearly in Figure 4, the top wall l2 of the casing I0 is provided intermediate its ends with a longitudinally extending depressed recess portion 20 constituting a web guiding channel and connected or attached to the top wall l2 by means of lateral guide surfaces 22. At the extremities thereof, the Web guiding channel 20 is provided with transversely extending slots indicated generally at 24 in Figure 2, and through which are adapted to pass a web 26 of any suitable material.
The web 26 may conveniently consist of a continuous strip of paper or the like which as shown in Figure 6, is marked with suitably spaced indicia 28, representing the calendar data for each day of a year, and being appropriately spaced to also provide a memorandum pad for each day of the year. In accordance with the dictates of this invention, it is contemplated that a different web will be provided for each year to be used in the same device in an interchangeable manner. For this purpose, a dispensing roll, spool or reel 30, of a conventional type, such as indicated in Figure 5, but provided with my improved fastening means to be set forth hereinafter, is su tably positioned in the casing l0 and the web 26 therefrom is threaded through the slot 24 and over the recessed web channel 26, and onto a winding reel, spool or the like 32, likewise conveniently positioned in a suitable and detachable manner in the casing l0.
Attention is next directed more specifically to Figures 3 and 4, wherein it will be seen that upon the external surface of the wall I6, I provide a compartment 34, formed by a housing member 36 and the wall l6, and which may be detachably connected in any suitable manner. Suitably journalled in the compartment 34, are a pair of driven gears 38 and 4!], while a driving gear 42 is intermediately disposed between the gears 38 and 40 and continuously enmeshed therewith. being manually operable for simultaneously driving the gears 38 and 46, by means ofa crank 44. Each of the gears 38 and 40 is provided with a tongue 46 which is disposed upon the interior surface of the side wall l6 of the casing [0, for
receiving 1 channel 2 0. handle 44' is'subsequently manipulated tQsimuI- ;taneously operate both spools, to 'thus windin andidispense'the web as desired.
detachably supporting one end of the roll or spool 30, and appropriately shaped slot or recess 48 being provided in an end of the spool for that purpose. The other end of the spool 30 is provided with an axially extending bore 59 which is detachably engaged by an inwardly extending pin 52 carried by the outer end of a spring arm 54 which is suitably connected at its lower end to a flange 56 upon the side wall 14. The mem ber 54 ispreferably formed of. resilientmaterial and is biased to urge its pin 52 inwardly through a suitable aperture in the wall 54 and into detachable engagement with the axial bore 50, the tongue 46 and the pin 52 serving to rotatably support and position the spool or rollinsuitable position inside the casing. 7
Suitable supporting legs 58, which may preferably consist of a resilient-"andcushioning material such as rubber, felt or the like, areesecured upon a flange fifl-eextending laterally from .the .lower surfaces of the walls i l and. i6, for ;.conveniently supporting the device upon'the'surface: of; a desk'or'the like.
From the Tforegoing, it .is believed thatthe construction'an'd' mode of operation of my-clevice will be now-i apparent. A calendar web 28 is "withdrawn fromthe dispensing spoolfiifi and inserted. through the; slot 2d and over "the web guiding'sur'face 26, between the lateral guiding .walls 22 thereof and is then engaged uponithe winding roll .32. Manipulation of thehandle ,44 .:causes simultaneous operation of the winding and dispensing rolls for" positioningthe web in- "dicia 28 at any desired position upon'the exposed surface between the slots 2d and upon the web As occasion requires, "the I claim as my invention:
A desk calendar pad comprising a casing, a top wall for said casing, a web dispensing roll and a web winding roll journalled in said cas- 5 ing, a depressed web guiding channel confined within said top wall of said casing, said depressed channel terminating in narrow web receiving slots at the end thereof, and gear means for positively and simultaneously rotating said dispens- 10 ,ingeand winding rol1s,, a compartment upon one sisidezofssaid. casing, said-gear means being housed in said compartment and comprising, a first -:.driven gear mounted on said dispensing roll and v .a, second, driven gear of equal diameter mounted I5 onsaid'winding roll and a centrally disposed,
