CAR COUPLING.

FFKCEQ CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 250,366, dated December 6, 1881.
Application filed March 28, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, REUBEN JONES, of Mountville, Troup county, Georgia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Car- Oouplings; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section of my invention. Fig. 2 is front end elevation of the same.
My invention relates to improvements in carcouplings; and it consists of a draw-head pivoted in a draw-bar, and adapted to be raised or lowered by a lever operated from the side of thecar to couple cars of different heights, the draw-head of one car, carrying a couplinglink, striking the draw-head of the car to be coupled and forcing back a slide supporting a coupling-pin until the hole in the slide registers with the hole in the draw-head, and the coupling-pin falls by gravity through the link, coupling the cars, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, a represents a car of ordinary construction, to the bottom of which and at each end is secured a drawbar, I).
c is a draw-head, provided with an arm, (I, having a short slot near its rear end for the passage of a pin, passing also through the sides of the draw-bar, whereby the draw-head is pivoted to the draw-bar.
e is a bent lever, secured by staples to the car-platform,itsinner bent end passing through a staple onthe side of the draw-head and its outer end extending beyond the side of the car and bent upwardly. By this construction it will readily be seen that the draw-head can be raised or lowered, as desired, to couple cars of different heights. The draw-head is provided with the usual opening for the reception of the coupling-link 0, and also provided with the usual holes for the passage of the coupling-pin.
It represents an angular plate, adapted to slide in a horizontal opening made through the draw-head near its upper end. The horizontal part of the slide or angular plate It is provided near its rear end with a slot, through which a pin secured to the opposite faces of the opening passes to limit the play of the slide. In front of the slot in the horizontal part of the slide is a hole, which registers with the hole in the opening in the draw-head when the slide is forced back, so that the coupling-pin n, supported when drawn out by'the slide, will, when the holes register, fall by gravity through the opening in the draw-head and through the coupling-link, and the cars be coupled. The outer end of the slide it is bent up vertically and fits in a recess made in the front face-of the draw-head, so that when the slide is driven back by the draw-head of a car to be coupled the angular part of the slide will not be injured. A piece of rubber, m, is inserted in the cavity in the rear end of the draw-bar, bearing against the end of the arm 61 of the draw-head and the end of the cavity in the draw-bar, to relieve the strain on the pivotal pin of the draw-head, and hold, by reason of its elastic pressure, the draw-head in a horizontal position.
In practice, thecoupling-linkbeingsupposed in place, with its coupling-pin passing through it one car, and it is desired to couple another car of difierent height, having its coupling-pin raised and supported on its slide, the pivoted draw-head of the car to be coupled is raised or lowered by the lever on the side of the car to the requisite height, the link enters the linkopening in the car to be coupled, the drawheads of the cars impinge against each other, the slide supporting the coupling-pin is forced backward until its hole registers with the holes in the opening of the draw-head, and the coupling-pin falls by gravity through the link, and the cars are coupled.
It is obvious that a car having a draw-bar of ordinary construction, carrying a link with its coupling-pin inserted therein, can by my construction be readily coupled to a car of different height with my improved coupling secured thereto, as the draw-head of the latter may readily be raised by the lever for the insertion of the link, and the slide be forced back and the pin dropped into place, as before described.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. The combination, with the draw-bar b, of the draw-head 0, provided with an arm, 01, piv
oted in the cavity of the draw-bar, and the rubber m, bearing against the bottom of the cavity in the draw-bar and the inner end of the arm d, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination, with the draw-bar b, of the draw-head 0, provided with an arm, d,pivoted in the cavity of the draw-bar, rubber m, and bent lever a, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the draw-bar b, draw to head 0, having an arm, d, pivoted in the cavity of the draw-bar, rubber m, angular slotted slide h, coupling-pin n, and. link 0, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth. REUBEN JONES. Witnesses:
