UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GOODWIN O. BISHOP, OF HANNIBAL, MISSOURI.
MOVABLE AND ADJUSTABLE POST AND PILE DRIVING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 250,336, dated December 6, 1881.
Application filed October 1'7, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GooDwIN O. BIsHOP, a citizen of the United States, residing in Hannibal, in the county of Marion and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Post and File Drivers; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the truck and frame. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view thereof.
This invention has relation to post and pile drivers; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, as will hereinafter be fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the truck -frame; B B, the supportingwheels, and O the guidewheel. From the truck-frame A rises an axially-adjustable frame, D, having the curved guide E near its lower end. The leads F F, for-guiding the hammer G, are swiveled to the top of this frame D, and a ladder-brace, H, is hinged to the top of the frame D and connects at its bottom with an inclined frame, X, secured to the truck-frame in such a manner that the ladder-brace may be adjusted to keep the leads in a vertical position when the truckframe is resting on inclined or uneven ground. The leads F are provided with a bracket, I, which engages the curved guide E. A pivoted ratchet-arm. J, is connected to the leads and engages a deg, K, on the frame D, to hold the leads to their adjustment in a vertical position when one of the supporting-wheels rests on higher ground than the other one. A sliding evener, L, works on the truck-frame A, a
tongue, M, and neck-yoke N being provided,
to which the team may be hitched. A chain, 0, connected with the hammer, runs over a pulley, P, at the top of the leads; thence down under a pulley, Q, in the truck-frame A, and is connected to the evener. The inclined frame X is provided with a shaft, It, carrying ratchetwheels S, engaging straight racks T on the A hand-wheel, U, at the end of the shaft B, is employed to adjust the frame D, by moving the ladder-brace either up or down, as may be necessary to keep the leads in a vertical position. A chain, V, provided with a hook, V, is attached to the axle of the truck, and is employed to regulate the distance between the posts or piles, as is shown, by engaging the hook V with the post last driven and moving the machine forward until the chain V becomes taut, and then driving another post and repeating the operation until the desired number of posts have been driven. The guide-wheel G at the front of the truck is for guiding the machine. The hammer is held by the nippers in the usual manner, and checkpieces near the top of the leads are employed to trip the nippers.
This machine may be readily drawn from place to place, and the team utilized to operate the hammer. It may be adjusted laterally and axially, to always keep the leads in a vertical position; and although I do not broadly claim a post or pile driver having these two adjustments, I do claim the special construction hereinafter claimed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire l0 secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a post and pile driving machine, the combination, with the truck-frame A, mounted on the wheels B B and (l, ofthe frameD, hinged lad der-brace H,provided with the strai gh t racks T, the inclined frame X, and the ratchets S, and
hand-wheelU on the shaftR. whereby the frame D is rendered axially adjustable, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a post and pile driving machine, thecombination, with the axially-adj ustable frame D, provided with the curved guide E, near its lower end, of the leads F, swiveled to the top of said frame and provided with the bracket I, near their lower ends for engaging the guide E, and the rack J and deg K, whereby the leads may be adjusted laterally within the frame D and be held to their adjustment, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
3. In a post and pile driving machine, the combination, with the truck-frame A, carrying pulley a, axially-adjustable frame D, carrying pulley 1? near its top, and laterally-adjustable leads F, of the sliding evener L, chain 0, and the hammer G, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
