Description

W. s. BUGG. Y AX HANDLE ATTAOHMENT.
( No Model.)
Patented Nov. 29,1881.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM S. BUGG, OF ALMOND, ALABAMA.
AX-HANDLE ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 250,198, dated November 29, 1881.
Application filed January 15, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. Bnee, of Almond, in the county of Randolph and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ax-Handle Attachments; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improved means for fastening the handles of axes, hatchets, and other like tools in the eyes of the same; and it has for its objects to secure the handle in such manner that it can be readily detached, when required, while it cannot by any possibility become detached by accident. These objects I attain by the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of an ax, showing a portion broken away to clearly represent the means of attachment. Fig. 2 represents a top view of the ax, and Fig. 3 a detached view of a cap employed in connection with the ax to secure the handle.
The letter A indicates the ax, which may be of the usual form.
B indicates the aX-eyc, which slopes from one side to the other, as usual. The said eye is rectangular in section, and at its upper end or side is provided with a cap, G, which is adapted to fit in the eye, and is provided with a flanged top, D, which fits in a recess, E, at the top edge or side of the ax. The said cap is provided with an aperture, F, for a bolt, G,
which is screw-threaded for the purpose of securing the handle in the eye.
The handle (indicated by the letter H) has its upper end beveled or sloped, so as to accurately fit in the eye, and is provided with a metallic binding, I, extending across its top and down opposite sides a short distance. The said binding is provided with a screwthreaded aperture, K, into which the. screwbolt is adapted to take, so as to securely confine all the parts together. It will be seen that the binding not only serves as a seat for the screw-bolt, but also prevents the handle from splitting.
It is evident that-the invention, besides the tools enumerated, can be applied to any of the class of tools usually having the handles inserted and secured in an eye.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- The combination, with the tapered eye and the rectangular recess formed in the ax-head, ot' the metal-shod and tapered tenon on the ax-handle, the cap formed with a surrounding flange and fitted flush into the smallest end of the eye and its recess, and the screw for drawing the cap and tenon tightly in their places, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of December, 1880.
W. S. BUGG.
