SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 250,008, dated November 22, 1881.
Application filed April 21, 1881.
To alt whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK SHRIVER, of Grand Rapids, in the county ot' Kent and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Steam-Generator, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of this invention is to provide a steam-generator which has the base-burning feature embodied in it, and which is designed for low-pressure heating purposes and for domestic work, and which has no tube or crownsheet to protect by a fixed water-line.
The invention consists of an upright boiler of U-shaped cross-section, having a double shell inclosing the water-space, curved in such a manner that one shell or wall forms the exterior of the boiler and the'walls of the interior central fuel-reservoir, while the other and concentric shell forms the walls of the interior smoke-due of the boiler, through which pass the heat and products of combustion, thereby forming an interior and an exterior waterchamber connected with each other.

In the drawings, A represents the boiler, having a double shell, B C, that is of U-sh aped cross-section, inclosin g a water-space, D. The opening or space between the shells or walls B C is closed at bottom and top with corresponding U-shaped heads E, to which said shells or walls B C are secured in the usual manner by rivets a. The boiler-shells B C are shaped in such a manner that in eect an interior water-chamber,R, and an exterior waterchamber, L, are formed, which connect with each other at the opposite curves or points of the U to form the water-space D. When the said shells are inclosed in a brick wall, F, or otherwise, the shell B forms a central space, Gr, that serves as a magazine for fuel, and the shell C forms aspace,H, through which the products of combustion pass into the smoke-stack I. K 'represents an opening in the exterior of the boiler A opposite the fuel-feed openin g L', and an opening, K', through the surrounding brick- (No model.)
work F, which is designed to be provided with a damper, gives access to the space H for clearing the same at any time. Around this opening K the boiler-shells B G are riveted to a frame, K2, inserted between them.
Mrepresents the fire-chamber, provided with grate M', and surrounded with a cylindrical water-j acket, N, whose water-space N' is closed at top and bottom by heads or rings E', in the same manner as is shown in the boiler A.
O represents an opening in the Water-jacket N, to give access to the tire on the grate M'.
The boiler A and water-jacket N are of the same diameter, and the two are locked or keyed together, the boiler A resting on the waterjacket N, by the tongues d of thelower head,E, entering correspondin g grooves c in thetop ring, E', of the water-jacket N. The device is thus strengthened also by this tongued and grooved joint c d, which joint could also be made with the tongue and groove beveling or V-shaped, instead of rectangular, as shown. The boiler A and water-jacket N are further held together and a constant circulation oi` water maintained between them by means ot' the exterior circulating-pipes, P, that connect the bottom of the boiler with the upper part of the water-jacket N.
A plate, Q, fixed at an angle of about forty ve degrees beneath the fuel-feed opening L', serves to direct the fuel that is fed into the device upon the grate M'.
The boiler A is covered with a metal plate, A', which closes the space G and a portion of the space H at the top, and said cover A' has a rib, f, on its under side, that engages in a corresponding groove, g, formed in the top head, E, whereby a tightjoint is made andthe boiler A also stiffened or strengthened.
B' represents the steam-escape pipe from the boiler A. This boiler A can be used without the water-jacket N, a brick tire-pot being substituted therefor, in either case it being designed to have a suitable brick ash-pit in which the grate M' is to be supported.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desireto secureby Letters Patent- 1. In a steam generator, a boiler having a double shell curved in such a manner that one shell forms the exterior wall of the boiler and the wall of the central fuel-reservoir, while the other shell forms the walls oftheinterior smokeiiue, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. f
2. In n steam -generator, the combination, with the shell B, forming the exterior of the boiler and the inner Wall of the fuel-magznzine, `and the shell C, forming the Walls of the smoke or fire flue, ofthe U-slinped heads E, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. In a steam-generator, the combination,
with the boiler A, consisting of the shells B C, curved as shown and described, and provided with the rear exterior opening, K, opposite the fuel-feed opening L', of the rear opening, K, in the surrounding brick wall, as and for the 15 purpose set forth. j FREDERICK SHRIVER.
