The present invention relates .to new and useful improvements in window ornaments and more particularly 110- means for displaying Christmas greetings or decorations in the window of ,a home, store, office or other building.

More specifically the invention comprises a translucent sheet of material secured in position over a window and adapted to contain an appropriate picture, legend or message, together with means positioned behind the translucent sheet forilluminating the same.

An important object of the invention is to provide a window decoration of this character which will not exclude light during the day-time, but excludes the interior of a room from persons outside of the window and which may be illuminated by means of an electric lamp supported on the Window sill behind the window so as to produce an attractive display for the picture, message or the like contained on the translucent sheet of material.

A further object of the invention is to provide means for easily and quickly detaching an electric lamp supporting member to a window sill behind the ornamented translucent sheet of material covering the window.

A still further object of the invention is to provide an article of this character of simple and practical construction, which is neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, which may be installed in position at the inside of a window without marring the window frame or window sill and which otherwise is well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.

Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Figure 1 is a front elevationa1 view.

Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially on a line 3-3 of Figure 2, and

Figure 4 is a fragmentary perspective View of the support for the electric bulb.

Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention the numeral 5 designates a conventional form of window frame which includes a window sill 6 and having the slidin upper and lower sash 1 and 8 mounted therein.

To the inner surface of the window pane 9 mountedinthelower sash 8 is secured a sheet of translucent flexible material I!) by means of spots of adhesive-ll at the corners of the sheet of material, the sheet l 0 covering the entire .pane' of glass 9.

The-sheet [0 may be ornamented in any suitablemanner such as printing or otherwise displaying .a picture [2 thereon and including a candle I3. as well as any form of greetings M.

Theportion. of the sheet of material I!) immediately, above the candle I3 is out out to form an opening [5 of a shape representing the flame of the candle or any other design or shape and behind which is supported an electric lamp H5 in a socket ll on the upper end of a wire rod l8 which has its lower end bent to form a base [9 and a clip 20 extended over the edge of the window sill 6 and under the window sill to secure the rod [8 in an upright position on the window sill. The electric cord 2i for the lamp [6 is twisted around the rod B8 to retain the cord in position, the cord extending to any suitable electric outlet in the room.

By reason of the translucent character of the sheet of material 10 daylight is not excluded from the room during the day-time, although a view of the interior of the room is excluded by persons outwardly thereof.

At night-time the lamp I6 is energized and creates the appearance of a burning candle in the window and at the same time illuminates the back of the sheet of material I!) to display the picture thereon.

The sheet of material Ill may be easily and quickly attached in position to the inside of the pane of glass 9 and removed therefrom when desired and the lamp supporting post it may also be easily and quickly secured in position to the window sill without necessitating the use of any special fastening devices such as nails, screws or the like which might tend to roar the finish of the window sill.

In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, manner of use and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in the art. A more detailed description thereof is accordingly deemed unnecessary.

It is to be understood, however, that even though I have herein shown and described a preferred embod ment of my invention that the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:

1. An illuminated decoration for a window having a window sill and a transparent window pane, said decoration comprising a translucent sheet adapted to cover a substantial area of said window pane, means securing said translucent sheet on one side of said Window pane, said translucent sheet having areas of varying opacity affording a decorative design when illumined and a transparent area of limited size and shaped as a major component of said design, and illuminating means supported from said window sill behind said translucent sheet in a manner to illumine said design, said illumining means comprising a lighted lamp bulb of a, shape such as to be confined wholly within said transparent area, and means enabling adjusting the position of said illumining means to register said lamp bulb with said transparent area.

2. An illuminated decoration for a window having a window sill and a transparent window pane, said decoration comprising a translucent sheet adapted to cover a substantial area of said window pane, means securing said translucent sheet on one side of said window pane, said translucent sheet having areas of varying opacity affording a decorative design when illumined and a transparent area of limited size and shaped as a major component of said design, and illuminating means supported from said window sill behind said translucent sheet in a manner to illumine said design, said illumining means comprising a lighted lamp bulb of a shape such as to be confined wholly within said transparent area, and means enabling adjusting the position of said illumining means to register said lamp bulb with said transparent area, said transparent design area being defined by a correspondingly shaped opening formed in said translucent sheet, through which the shape and luminosity of said lamp bulb are directly visible through said window pane.
