NiTED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
JAMES BENSON, OF OENTRALIA, ILLINOIS.
INJECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 249,876, dated November 22, 1881.
I Application filed August :22, 1881. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMEs BENSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Centralia, in the county of Marion and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Injectors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part ot' this specilication.
My invention relates to that class of directacting steam-pumps or steam water drivers known as injectors57 and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertical section of my improvement; and Fig. 2 is a similarview taken on the linexxof Fig. l.
A represents the chamber or casing of the injector; H, the suction-pipe, and K the discharge-pipe. The pipe H is screwed into the lower end of the casing A, the latter being interiorly threaded to receive it. The dischargepipe K, or such part ot' it as is shown in the drawings, has an annular iange, lt, adapted to seat upon the upper end of the casing A and be held in place by a clamping-nut, It, the upper end of the casing A being threaded to receive said nut. The upper end of the pipe K is threaded to receive the standard sizes of gas-pipe.
D represents the strain-pipe screwed into the side of the casing A, communicating directly with the passage G, which is provided with the steam-nozzle B. The latter is stationary, being preferably cast in the same piece with the casing.
C represents the adjustable water-discharge nozzle, threaded on its exterior to screw into the upper end of the casing, the latter being interiorly screw-threaded, as shown. Thus said nozzle may be vertically adjusted at will.
For the purpose of allowing the water free ingress to and agress from the nozzle C, the latter is formed with an annular bevel, o, at its lower end, and has its interior graduated in diameter from the lower to the upper end to form the wide discharge-mouth c.
The interior of the steam-nozzle B is inclined from its lower to its upper end, so that there is a continuous graduation in diameter from the lower end of the nozzle B to the upper end of the adjustable discharge-nozzle C, and the discharge of steam and water will thus be facilitated.
The operation of my improvement is as follows: The pump being placed in position and the proper connections being made with the steam-boiler, the pump, and water supply and discharge, steam is admitted to the pipe D and rushes through passage G and out through the steam-nozzle B, drawing the air out of the chamber A and pipe H, and through the water-nozzle C. The water from the pipe H then immediately rushes upward, and, passing into the casing A, miugles with the steam and is ejected through the nozzle C.
It will be observed that the nozzle C may be adjusted with reference to the naturev of the work to be accomplished. When the water has tobe raised any considerable distance by suction the nozzle C can be screwed down close to the nozzle B, therebyv giving a very strong suction. If the water has to be forced a long distance, the nozzle C should be raised,
when the water may be forced any reasonable.
distance.
I ain aware that it is not new to combine in an injector a steam-nozzle and an adjustable waterdischarge nozzle. Hence I make no broad claim to such a combination, but confine myself to the improved construction and oombination of parts specified in the claim.
The combination, with the casing A, having a transverse steam-passage, G, cast in the same piece therewith, and a steam-jet nozzle, B, cast with said passage and beinginteriorly graduated, as shown, of an adjustable waterdischarge nozzle, screw-threaded to tit the upper end of the casing A and interiorly graduated, as shown, to form,in connection with the steam-jet nozzle B, a steam and water passage of gradually-increasing diameter, as set forth.
ln testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES BENSON.
