This invention relates to a combination stand and has special reference to such a device especially adapted for use in a hospital intermediate of beds in a single room or ward where short spells of at least semiprivacy are frequently desirable.

To this end the combination is shown to include an upright portable mast carrying intermediate of its ends a shelf and the interior of the mast being accessible for selective storage or action of a relatively small curtain.

Furthermore the head or upper end of the mast is equipped with hooks for garment or towel support.

Obviously the objects sought in such a combined instrumentality are numerous, however, among them are practicability, simplicity and convenience in operation. Other objects will appear as the description of the invention proceeds.

In the drawing forming part of this application:

Fig. 1 is a perspective View of the stand with the curtain extended from the body portion thereof, and

Fig. 2 is a, similar view somewhat enlarged of a fragmental portion of Fig. 1 showing the working parts of the stand.

The reference numeral I represents the substantially square hollow mast-like support mounted upon any suitable arrangement or" castered legs as at 2 and carrying fixed thereto as at 3 the shelf-like stand top l.

Spaced a short distance downwardly from the top or upper end of the mast and extending from each side wall thereof is fixed a common hat hook or other type of hook 5 for convenience particularly in this instance for holding nap-kins, towels, or the like.

However, the principal novel feature of the invention resides in the fact that a shield or curtain 6 forming protection from possibly unwanted eyes not far distant may be provided when the one single hinged side 1 of the mast I is manipulated for such purpose.

This is possible by the upper major portion of the side 1 being hingedly attached as at 8 to the remainin fixed portion 9 of the same side member 50 that the upper end of the portion 1 may be drawn outwardly and downwardly upon its pivotal hinge connection 8 to the horizontal position more clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing.

end stick is of the curtain while the curtain roller in this instance is at the bottom of the curtain and supported quite yieldably and rotatably within the yoke l4 pivotally attached as at [5 to said side member I.

These connections at the different ends of the curtain are to provide as much freedom from friction as possible during the folding or unfolding of the curtain, it being desirable to tuck it away as quickly as possible and to which end the catching dog at the end of the curtain common to such is dispensed with so that the curtain at all times is biased towards rolling up action.

To keep the pivotally mounted side member I holding the lower roller end of the curtain and the rod l0 holding the upper end thereof operating in unison, the vertically reciprocal member 56 isslidably attached to the inner face of the opposite inner wall of the mast to that of l and carrying intermediate of its ends the angle lug H. To this lug or bracket is pivotally attached as at l8 one of the two slidably adjustably united brace links ill-2i], the latter having its remote end similarly pivotally attached to the rod Ill as at 2 i. To this same end the lower terminus of the member It is turned outwardly at right angles as at 22 for contact with the inner end of the member 23 fixed to the upper face of the inner end of the member 1.

Thus when the relation of the members 1 and Eli are properly established, they will remain in parallel relation at all times when the curtain is repeatedly raised and lowered.

From the above in conjunction with especially Fig. 2 of the drawing it is readily seen how that when the member 1 having member 23 fixed thereto with its inner end protruding well into the mast l and in the member IE it will engage said member and force it upwardly carrying with it the adjusting link l92ll which will simultaneously operate the upper end of the curtain 6 by means of its supporting connection with the lever l0.

It has been proven in practice that in some instances at least, some additional weight as at 24 may be employed to advantage by being fixed to the swingable portion l to hold same in a more forceable manner when the curtain is being used.

It will be noted that the inner upper corner of the curtain 6 is cut away as at 25 to facilitate its being folded into the hollow mast I.

What I claim is:

1. A device of the type described comprising an elongated hollow mast, a door, said door open- .ing out from one side of said hollow mast, a

spring controlled curtain roll carried by said door on the inner face thereof, an arm pivotally secured within said mast and having one end thereof secured to the free end of said curtain, and a lever arrangement within said mast to operate said arm to open said curtain as said door is opened.

2. The structure as set forth in claim 1 and said lever arrangement including a reciprocable member actuated by said door to open said curtain.

3. The structure as set forth in claim 2 and a link connecting said reciprocabl member and said arm.

4. A device of the type described comprising an elongated hollow support, a hinged door on one side of said support, a rolled curtain rotatably carried by said door on the inner side thereof, an arm pivotally carried at one end thereof by said support and attached to the free end of said curtain at the other end, and a link connected to said-arm and actuated by said door to open said curtain.

5. The structure as set forth in claim 4 an said curtain being spring urged toward rolled position at all times.

6. The structure as set forth in claim 4 and said curtain being longitudinally rockably carried on said door.

8. A device of the type described comprising an elongated hollow support, a door hinged on one side. of said support, a rolled spring actuated curtain carried by said door, an arm pivotally carried atone end by said support and attached to the freeend. of said curtain at the. other end,

a reciprocable member carried longitudinally of said support and actuable by said door, and a link pivotally connected at the respective ends thereof to said member and said arm whereby the operation of said door induces extension and retraction of said curtain.

9. The structure as set forth in claim 8 and said curtain being carried Within said support when said door is in closed position.

10. A device of the type described comprising a hollow support, a hinged door on one side of said support, a rolled curtain carried by said door, and means within said support actuated by said door to extend said curtain.

11. The structure as set forth in claim 10 and said curtain being spring biased toward closed position at all times.

12. The structure as set forth in claim 10 and said means including a reciprocable member actuated by said door, an arm pivotally carried at one end in said support and having its other end attached to the vfree end of said curtain, and a link pivotally connected to said member and said arm.
