Description
Jan., w, 195@ J. L.. YOUNGHUSAND ZM POWDER BOX Filed Dec. 6, 1947 Patented Jan. 10, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE POWDER BOX James L. Younghusband, Chicago, Ill.
Application December 6, 1947, Serial No. 790,071
1 Claim.
This invention relates to a powder box adapted to prevent loss of powder.
It is among the objects of my invention to provide a powder box having a seal for preventing the sifting of powder therefrom, thereby preventing the powder from undesirably contacting the hands or clothing of the user or falling out of the box onto the table or floor.
My invention also contemplates such other objects, advantages and -capabilities as will later more fully appear and which are inherently possessed by my invention.
While I have shown herein preferred embodiments of my invention, yet it is understood that the same is susceptible of modification and change without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Referring to the drawings, Fig. 1 is a top plan view; Fig. 2 is a side elevational View; Fig. 3 a detailed sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is an exploded View of the parts shown in Fig. 3 partly in section; Fig. 5 is a detailed sectional vew on line 5--5 of Fig. 4; Figs. 6 and '7 are detailed sectional views of modified forms of my invention.
The embodiment selected to illustrate my invention comprises a box I made of cardboard or other suitable material, having a container portion II adapted to hold face powder. The
container portion II has a bottom I2, sidewalls I3, preferably curved, and an open top I4.
My box Ill also has a cover portion I with a top I6, side walls Il, also preferably curved, and an open bottom I8.
A disc I9, preferably of cardboard or other suitable material, has its top portion 20 attached to the inner surface 2l of top I6 by an adhesive or other suitable means. Disc I9 is smaller in area than top I6 so that a marginal area of the inner surface 2| or top I5 is not covered by disc I9. The side walls 22 of disc I9 are spaced from contact with the inner surfaces 23 of side walls I'I, and are not attached thereto.
Another disc 25 has its top portion 26 attached to the bottom portion 2l of upper disc I9 by an adhesive or other suitable means. Lower disc 25 is larger in area than upper disc I9 and slightly overlaps upper disc I9.
Although lower disc '25 is slightly larger in area than upper disc I9, yet lower disc 25 is slightly smaller in area than top I 6,' so that side walls 28 of lower disc 25 are slightly spaced from contact with the inner surfaces of side walls Il.
Cover I5 is slightly larger than container II so that when cover I5 is removably positioned on container II walls I'I of cover l5 slide over walls I3 of container II and t thereagainst by slight friction grip.
Walls I3 of container I I extend between and contact the upper portions of walls I1 of cover I5 and walls 28 of lower disc 25. Walls I3 bearing against beveled walls 28 compress lower disc 25 for entry of cover I5 on container I0. The resiliency of lower disc 25 cooperating with walls I3 of the container I 0 provides a seal. This prevents powder from passing over the top of walls I3 of container Il and sifting out of the box.
In another embodiment upper disc I9 may be eliminated and lower disc 25 attached direct to the under surface of top l5. In this form sole disc 25 would be substantially thicker with inwardly and upwardly beveled side walls 28.
It is also within the contemplation of my invention that the walls '28 of disc 25 be beveled downwardly and inwardly as shown in Fig. 7 so that the area of the disc at its upper portion is larger than the area at its lower portion.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
A cylindrical powder box comprising a container having a closed bottom, an open top and straight side walls, a cover having a closed top, an open bottom and straight side walls, an upper disc of smaller area than the top of said cover,
said upper disc attached to the inner surface of the top of said cover, a lower disc formed of laminations of cardboard and being slightly compressble and having an upper surface and inwardly and upwardly beveled side walls, the upper surface of said lower disc attached to the bottom surface of said upper disc, said lower disc of larger area than said upper disc and slightly overlapping the same, said lower disc of smaller area than the top of said cover, the side walls of said lower disc unattached to the side walls of said cover and the lower peripheral edges of the side walls of said lower disc being spaced slightly less than the thickness of the side walls of the container from contact with the side walls of said cover, said cover slightly larger than said container and adapted for removable engagement therewith so that the walls of said container extend between the side walls of said lower disc and the upper portions of the side walls o! said cover, thereby contacting and compressing said lower disc to form a. seal to UNITED sTAgEs PATENTS Name Date McFarland May 8, 1923 Bent Sept. 14, 1948 FOREIGN PATENTS Country Dat-e Great Britain Aug. 19, 1938
