My invention relates to hair curlers, and more particularly to a hair curler adapted to form what is known as a sculpture curl. The sculpture curl according to the invention comprises a plurality of convolutions in a lock of hair wherein each convolution is slightly laterally offset relative to the preceding convolution.

With the foregoing in view, an object of my invention is to provide an improved curler for forming a sculpture curl.

A further object is to provide an improved hair curler for forming a sculpture curl which includes means for winding a cylindrical curl onto a form, and means for shifting the curl to a biased position providing a sculpture curl together with means for securing said curl in said biased position to set the curl.

Other objects and advantages reside in the particular structure of the invention, combination and arrangement of the several parts of the curler, all of which will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art upon reference to the attached drawing disclosing by way of an example one embodiment of the invention, in connection with the following specification, wherein the invention is shown, described and claimed.

Referring specifically to the drawing, wherein like reference characters have been used throughout the several views to designate like parts, and wherein there is illustrated by way of an example one form of curler according to the invention, Ill designates a curler body which may be of any suitable configuration, but which is preferably an elongated cylindrical member. In this connection, the body III has been shown in the drawing as being relatively thick and, in practice, would 2 preferably be somewhat thinner. However, for the purpose of illustration, the body I!) as shown is sufficient. The body It is provided with free II and i2 which are preferably substantially frusto-conical. As best seen in Figure 6, a portion of the body If! intermediate the ends ii and 12 thereof, has secured to opposite sides thereof a pair of elongated members generally indicated at I3 and I4.

In the embodiment illustrated, the members I3 and M are identical, whereby it will be sufficient to describe but a single one of them. Likewise, in the embodiment illustrated, each elongated member is formed from a strip of flexible resilient material which is substantially Y-shaped to provide a leg I5 and a pair of diverging arms I6 and ii, each arm having one end secured to said leg. The other ends of the arms I 6 and I! are secured to one side of the body It! in longitudinally-spaced relation, and in oppositely-disposed relation to the other pair of arms I6 and H, whereby to provide slots It for the reception of the free end of a lock of hair I9, Figure l, therein. With the free end of the lock of hair I9 inserted through at least one of the slots I8, as shown in Figure 1, the legs I5 of the members I3 and I4 are extended longitudinally along the body II] toward opposite ends thereof. Each leg I5 includes a cap 29 which fits over one of the ends I I or I2, whereby to maintain the legs I5 in stretched relation along the body Hi. This operation causes the inner surface of the arm I6 of the member l3 to clampinglysecure the free end of the lock of hair against the body II]. To provide a convenient means for stretching the legs I5, and applying the caps 20' T to the free ends I I and I 2 of the body I0, each leg I5 is extended beyond the cap 2!! thereof to provide a free end 2| forming a finger grip outwardly of the related cap.

With the lock of hair I9 secured to the body II], as in Figure l, the body iil and/or the lock of hair is rotated in the direction of the arrows, Figures 1 and 2, until a cylindrical curl 22, Figure 3, is formed about the body Ill and the adjacent portions of the elongated members I3 and E4. The caps 2i! are now removed from the free ends II and I2 of the body and moved, as is indicated in broken lines, Figure 3, in the direction of the arrows and secured, Figure 4, to the ends of the body IIJ opposite to those to which they were originally secured. This movement form-s bights 23, Figure 4, which engage opposite sides of opposite end portions of the curl I9 and which are operative to shift the curl relative to the body II] to a biased position providing a sculpture curl 24. The sculpture curl 24 thus formed is left on the body In in the biased position until the curl has set, whereupon it is removed from the body I and treated in a well known manner.

While I have shown and described What is now thought to be a preferred embodiment of the invention for forming the curl, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of other structures and of being formed by other methods. Consequently, I do not limit myself to the precise structure shown and described hereinabove except as hereinafter claimed.

I claim:

1. A hair curler, comprising an elongated body including free ends, a pair of flexible members secured to opposite sides of said body, said members including free ends adapted to be extended toward opposite ends of said body so as to extend said members along said opposite sides of said body in opposite directions, means for securing a lock of hair to said body intermediate said ends thereof whereby rotation of said body in one di rection forms a cylindrical curl about the same and adjacent portions of said members, said free ends of said members being adapted to be extended reversely alongopposite sides of said body so as to overlie said curl and form bights operatively engaging opposite sides of opposite ends of said curl, whereby to shift said curl on said body to a biased position forming a sculpture curl, and said free ends of said members being adapted to be secured to opposite ends of said body whereby to maintain said curl in said biased position.

A hair curler, comprising an elongated body including free ends, a pair of flexible elastic members secured to opposite sides of said body, said members including free ends adapted to be extended toward opposite ends of said body so as to extend said members along said opposite sides of said body in opposite directions, means for securing a lock of hair to said body intermediate said ends thereof whereby rotation of said body in one direction forms a cylindrical curl about the same and adjacent portions of said members, and said free ends of said members being adapted to be extended reversely along opposite sides of said body so as to overlie said curl and form bights operativel engaging opposite sides of opposite ends of said curl, whereby to shift said curl on said bod to a biased position forming a sculpture curl, and said free ends of said members being adapted to be secured to opposite ends of said body whereby to maintain said curl in said biased position.

A hair curler, comprising an elongated body including free ends, a pair of elongated members secured to opposite sides of said body, said members including free ends adapted to be extended toward opposite ends of said body so as to extend said members along said opposite sides of said body in opposite directions, means for securing a lock of hair to said body intermediate said ends thereof whereby rotation of said body in one direction forms a cylindrical curl about the same and adjacent portions of said members, said members being adapted to be extended reversely along said opposite sides of said body so as to engage opposite sides of opposite ends of said curl and move said opposite sides of said curl longitudinally of said body in opposite directions so as to shift said curl on said body to a biased position forming a sculpture curl, and said free ends of said members being adapted to be secured to opposite ends of said body whereby to maintain said curl in said biased position.

A hair curler, comprising an elongated body including free ends, a pair of Y-shaped flexible elastic members each including a leg and a pair of diverging arms having one of their ends secured to said leg, the other ends of said arms of one member being secured to one side of said body intermediate the ends of the latter in longitudinally-spaced relation, the other ends of said arms of the other member being similarly secured to the opposite side of said body in opposed relation to said first-named member, said legs of said members including caps seata'ble over opposite ends of said body upon stretching of said legs along said body in opposite directions, said arms of at least one of said members cooperating with said body to provide means for securing a lock of hair to said body for winding of said lock about said body and said arms to form, a cylindrical curl, said caps being adapted to be thereafter secured to ends of said body opposite to those to which said caps were originally secured, whereby to form bights in said legs engaging opposite sides of opposite ends of said curl and operative to shift said curl to a biased position forming a sculpture curl.

5. A hair curler, comprising an elongated body including free ends, a pair of Y-shaped flexible elastic members each including a leg and a pair of diverging arms having one of their ends connected to said leg, the other ends of said arms of one member being secured to one side of said body intermediate the ends of the latter in longitudinally-spaced relation, the other ends of said arms of the other member being similarly secured to the opposite side of said body in opposed relation to said first-named member, said legs of said members including caps seatable over opposite ends of said body upon stretching of said legs along said body in opposite directions, said arms of at least one of said members cooperating with said body to provide means for securing a lock of hair to said body for winding of said lock about said body and said arms to form a cylindrical curl, said caps being adapted to be thereafter secured to ends of said body opposite to those to which said caps were originally secured, whereby to form bights in said legs engaging opposite sides of opposite ends of said curl and operative to shift said curl to a biased position forming a sculpture curl, and said legs including free ends formed to provide finger grips outwardly of said caps.
