HARROW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,221, dated October 11, 18 81.
Application filed August 17,1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUDWIG SILLAND, of Edwardsville, in the county of Madison and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Harrows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had totheaccompanyiugdrawing,formingpart of this specification, in which the figure represents a top view, partly in section, of my improved harrow.
Myinvention relates to improvements in harrows 5 and it consists in the peculiar construction and arran gementof the draft-rods and conmeeting-links, whereby the draft can be applied to two or more sections of the harrow, as desired.
The harrow proper consists of several interchangeable duplicate sections or members,'A, of which any desired number may be employed at a time. Each section A is composed of four parallel beams, B B B B, each carrying four or more teeth, I). The beams are secured together and held in place by parallel tie-bolts G, passing transversely through the beams and through distance-blocks D.
It will be seen in the accompanying drawing that the outer parallel beams B of eachsectiou A of the harrow are of about the same length, and that the beam B projects out beyond the beams B on the right side of each barrow-section A, and that the beam B does not project as far as the beams B on the left side of each barrow-section. The transverse beam B of each section is arranged in the reverse manner to the beam B, so that'the beam B projects beyond the beams B on the left side of each barrow-section, its opposite right-hand end not projecting out as far as the beams B. By this construction it will be seen that each section (when the barrow-sections are connected together, so that the ends of the transverse beams B B B abut against each other in the several section s) will, in the forward movement of the connected sections, harrow a portion of the soil over which its adjacent section also passes. By this arrangement of the beams, also, the teeth can be so arranged therein that not one of them will follow in the track of another. I i
To the rear ends of each section A are secured barrow are secured in place by means of nuts 0, whereby they may be readily removed when harrowin g cornground or other plants in rows,
v and thus not destroy the corn or other plants.
The sections A of the harrow are connected at their front ends to the draft-beam E by means of parallel pull-rods F, secured to the beams B B of each section. The pull-rods F are provided at theirforward ends with eyes connected by clevises with the draft-beam E. The draftbeam E is made in two sections, S S, which are coupled together by means of parallel plates e, arranged on opposite sides of the draft-beam at the junction of the sections. The plates 6 are secured together and to the sections of the draft-beam by bolts passing through the plates and-sections of the draft-beam, and provided with nuts. By this construction the sections of the draft-beam are securely coupled together, and can readily be uncoupled when desired.

From this construction it will be seen that if it is desired towuse three sections of the herrow the draft is applied to the ring I, the parts 10 being arranged as above described. It'it is desired to use but two sections of the borrow, the plates 0 are removed, uncoupling the sections of the draft-beam, and the hooks m 0 are removed from engagement with the eyebolt h 15 and ring 1), when one section of the harrow will pose set forth.
