(01. 280-42) This invention comprises improvements connected with perambulators or like carriages and has for its object to provide a perambulator wherein the sides are moved towards one another to reduce the width of the perambulator or the like for storage.
Referring to the accompanying drawings:
Figure l is a view in elevation of a perambulator according to the present invention.
Figures 2 and 3 are plan views of the improved perambulator in the extended and folded state respectively with the hood removed.
Figures 4 and 5 are transverse sectional views on an enlarged scale in the extended and folded conditions respectively.
Figures 6 and 7 are fragmentary views on a further enlarged scale to illustrate a suitable form of catch for the end members of the perambulator.
Figures 8 and 9 are fragmentary views on a further enlarged scale of a means of attaching the handle to the perambulator, and
Figure 10 is a fragmentary view on a further enlarged scale of the detachable attachment of one end of the handle bar to one of the handle members of the perambulator.
Referring to Figures 1 to 5 the perambulator, body comprises side members I which are mounted on the undercarriage and pivotally mounted on the latter are the two parts 3 forming the bottom of the perambulator. Vertically hinged at 4 to one of the side members I are the end members 5 of the perambulator body.
The hood 6 of the perambulator may be of any well known folding type and may be provided with studs adapted to engage holes I in the side members I in such a manner that the hood may be used at either end of the perambulator in a reversible manner.
The undercarriage comprises two endless parallel tubular frame members 2 secured by means of blocks 8 to the side members I, and pivotally connected to the underside of the bottom members 3 by means of brackets 9. Strut members [0 are pivotally connected to the lower parallel portions of the tubular members 2 at their outer ends and are pivoted together at their inner ends and to a vertical link II, which link is pivotally connected at its upper end to the underside of the bottom members 3 by means of suitable extensions l2.
Each endless parallel tubular member 2 of the undercarriage is provided with a pair of vertical members l3, each member l3 carrying a block 8 and a housing M, which housing has slidable therein a block l5 which carries a stub axle 16 carrying the corresponding wheel I! of the peram bulator. tion in Figure 4, whence it will be seen that the block I5 is spring loaded against upward move ment by means of the compression spring l8, so that each wheel ll of the perambulator is independently sprung. I
In order to secure the end members 5 in the ex-. tended position each end member is provided with a slotted bar l9 at its free edge, adapted to engage a spring loaded headed pin 20 vertically mounted in the corresponding end of the adjacent side member I.
The exterior of each of the side members I is preferably formed from sheet metal and is extended at its lower part to conceal the linkage and the like parts associated with the undercarriage, and is also provided with flanges 2| to conceal the joints between the end members 5 and the aforesaid side members I. The interior of the side members I and the bottom members 3 are upholstered in any suitable way.
Each side member 22 of the handle of the perambulator is pivotally connected to the side members I, and for this purpose each side memher is provided with a channel member 23 adapted to receive the flattened portion 24 of each handle member 22. As will be seen in Figure 8 each handle member is pivoted in the channel member 23 and in order to lock the handle in its position of use a pin 25 mounted on a blade spring 28 secured to the outside of the channel member 23 engages a hole 21 in the portion 24 of the handle member 23. The handlebar 28, Figure 2, is pivoted at one end 29 to one of the handle members 22, whilst at the other end is detachably secured to the other handle member 22 by means of a bayonet slot connection 30, Figure 10.
In order to fold the perambulator the procedure is as follows:
The hood 6 is first removed and folded in the usual way.
The handlebar 28 is then disconnected at the bayonet slot connection 30 from the corresponding handle member 22 and each handle member 22 is released for movement about its pivot in the corresponding channel member 23 by disengaging the pin 25 from the hole 21, against the action of the blade spring 26. The handle members 22 are then swung about their pivots so as to lie on top of the perambulator body together with the handlebar 28 which lies alongside the handle member 22 to which it is pivoted.
