HERMAN A. W. MAERCKLEIN, OF HARTFCRD, CONNECTICUT.
SOFA-BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,933, dated October 4, 1881.
v Application tiled April 20, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I HERMAN A. W. MAERCK- LEIN, of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sofa-Beds, ot' which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 is a plan View of the sofa opened to serve as a bed, one folding bolster only being thrown back on its hinge. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of my sofa-bed closed. Fig. 3 is a back sectional elevation of one end ofthe sofa. Fig. 4 is a front elevation ofone end of the sofa.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved combined sofa and bed which shall be free from complicated devices for adapting lor retaining and releasing the back of the sofa to adapt it for use as a bed, and in the relative arrangement of the parts to preserve its lipholstery in good condition, and in the method of hinging the end holsters to the side arms ofthe sofa to avoid the appearance ot' a hingejoint at its front.
I more particularly drscribe my invention as follows i Thedrawings repiesenting myimprovements show in Fig. l the sofa opened for use as a bed, its back A being lowered on hinges a to bring it in the samel plane with the seat B. One of the hinged holsters C is shown swung over'on the lowered back A, the other end bolster C not being thrown over, in order to show the hinged plate or. leaf D. The fixed framework F supports the bottom or seat B and stationary arms' G of the sofa, its back ends eX- tending past the back ofthe arms G, as at F. The sofa is supported on suitable legs, H, a draw, I, sliding in guides between them, which serves as a receptacle for bed-clothing. Both legs H and drawer I are provided with casters 't'. Said drawer I can be drawn out a limited distance from the back of the sofa, being stopped by the blocks o, secured to the frame F, and when so drawn out, as in Fig. 2, its front supports the outer edge of the back A, to hold it in a horizontal position, as in Fig. l. The plates D', which are hinged at d to both endframes, D, ofthe sofa-back, act, when closed,
as in full lines in Fig. 3, to support the back A in a vertical position, and when so closed the plates D form a continuation of or ush finish with said end frames, D, and maybe locked in such closed position by any suitable device, as at d. To lower the back A, as in Fig. 1, the said plates D must first be lowered on their hinges d, when the back may be brought to the horizontal position to rest on the lower framebar, F2, and on the front ofthe drawer I. y The end holsters, C, are hinged at their backs, as at c, their fronts` closing` on the stationary arms G and making a joint therewith at the front, behind the frames C of the stationary arms G, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4, thus making a neat finish without showing a hinge-joint at the front 0f the sofa.
As n ill appear in Fig. 3, the back A is hinged at d to the back uplights of t-hestationary arms at aline about even with the tops 0f the springs J in the seat or at the center ofthe upholstery, which prevents the rising and lowering move ments ofthe back, unduly stretching or crowding the springs and other upholstery of the seat and back, and insuring their original smoothness of finish for a long period.
My combined sofa-bed is thus adapted for use either as a sofaor a bed without requiring the adj us:ment of complicated devices, and its` movements are simple and positive.
Having thus fully described my invention, l
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Paten t.--
1. In combination with the hinged back A and frames F, the hinged plates D, adapted to hold said hack A in a `vertical position and to he lowered to permit the back to be brought to a horizontal posit-ion, substantially as described. v
2. The combination, with stationary sofaarms, of the holsters C, hinged thereto attheir rear ends, and the lowering back A, as shown and described.
3. The back A, connected with the seat B by hinges c with pin-joints on aline with the tops ot' the springs J in the seat, to prevent unduly crowding and stretching said springs, as described.
HERMAN AUGUST WILHELM MAERCKLEIN.
