To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LEONARD P. MQSHER, of Gollamer, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Load Binder and Elevator, of which the following,

taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.

The nature of this invention consists in a novel combination and arrangement with the rack or box of a wagon of a rope extended across one end thereof, and fixed at its extremities to the opposite end of the same, with a slack on the intermediate portions of the rope and a roller connected to said intermediate portions of the rope and adapted for the -application of a wrench or lever, and of central elevating ropes, as hereinafter more fully described, and specifically set forth in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an isometric view of my invention, showing its application as a load-binder. Fig. 2 illustrates its operation as an elevator of the rack, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged detached view of the roller used in connection with the binding and elevating ropes.

R represents an ordinary hay rack of a wagon.

a is a rope, which is passed across the under side of one end of the rack, as shown at b, so as to be movably connected thereto. From thence the two end portions,c c, of the rope are extended nearly or quite parallel toward the opposite end of the rack and firmly secured thereto, the portions 0 0 having sufficient slack to pass over the top of the load of hay or other substance placed on the rack R.

top of the load. It is movably connected to the sections 0 c of the rope, at about midway the length ofthe rack, by passing the rope through holes h h, extended transversely through the roller. The center of the roller r is provided the said staple, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. A square or hexagonal collar, n, rigidly secured to the roller 1', admits of the application of a wrench orlever, l, for turning the roller and winding upon the same the several sections of the rope a connected thereto, as aforesaid, thereby binding the load on the rack. By leaving the lever Z connected with the collar a and carrying its free end underneath the rope the roller is prevented from turning back and unwinding the ropes. When the rack is to be unloaded the lever Z is made to release the roller r. The section b of the rope is then removed from the roller, and the roller moved along the sections 0 c to the end of the rack. The rope can then be thrown off the load.

When it is desired to remove the rack from the wagon the side sections, a c, of the rope are drawn out until the section b is drawn tight across the end of the rack. The roller 1" is then moved into the center of the sections 0 c, and the slack portions of the rope at opposite sides of the roller are thrown upon pulleys P 1?, secured at a proper elevation and in a convenient position in the barn or wagon-shed. To the ends of the roller are then connected two ropes or chains, 8 s, which, in turn, are secured to a bar, (1, extended across the under side of the rack R. Then by applying the lever l and turning the roller 1" all the ropes a, s, and s are wound upon said roller, and the rack is thus lifted off the wagon, and can be elevated as far as the length of the respective ropes will permit.

By fastening the roller 1 so as to prevent it from turning back the rack can be kept in its suspended elevated position.

When the rack is to be replaced onto the wagon, the wagon is placed directly under the rack and the rack let down onto it by releasing the roller 1", so as to unwind the several ropes. Then the ropes s s are taken ofl the ends of the roller, and the bar at is removed from under the rack and the rope a conveniently disposed around the exterior of the rack preparatory to reloading the same.

Having described my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s

1. The combination, with the rack R, of the rope 0, having the section b extended across one end of the rack and movably connected thereto, and the end sections, a c, secured to the opposite end of the rack with a slack on the rope, and the roller 9', connected to the sections 0 0, and provided with means for connecting to said roller the central part of the section b of the rope, and adapted for the application of a lever or wrench for turning said roller, substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination, with the rack B, of the rope 01, extended from end to end of the rack at the two sides thereof, with a sleek 0n the intermediate portion, a, of the rope, the roller r, connected to said intermediate portion of the rope, and adapted for the application thereto, respectively, of a wrench or lever, and of the elevating-ropes s s, substantially as de scribed and shown, for the purpose set forth.

3. The combined load binder and elevator,

consisting in the combination, with the rack R, of the rope (I, having the section b movably connected across one end of the rack, and the end sections, 0 0, secured to the opposite end of the rack, with a slack on the said rope, and the roller 1', connected to the sections 0 c, and provided with means for connecting to it respectively the center of the ropesection 11,21. Wrench or lever, and the elevating-ropes 8 s, all substantially as described and shown, for the purpose specified.
