UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ASSIGNORS OF ONE-THIRD TO AMOS WHITNEY AND WILLIAM RUFF, BOTH OF SAME PLACE.
N. WOOD- WAGON-SEAT FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,757, dated October 4, 1881.
Application filed April 23, 1881. (No model.)
I all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HIRAM HAVENS and VVILLIAM W. HAVENS, of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Seat Fasteners; and we do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, whereby a person skilled in the art can make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Like letters in the figures indicate the same parts.
Our invention relates to a new and improved method of fastening the sliding seat of a wagon in any desired position, and its object is to provide a more easily, adjusted and secure fastening than is now in use.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating our invention, Figure 1 shows an outside view of the end of a wagon-seat and part of the top rail of the side ofa wagon-body provided with our improvement. Figure 2 is an inside view of the same: Fig. 3 is a cross-section through the clamping device, showing the details of the improved fastener.
A is the end support of the seat, which rests upon the top rail of the sideboard B of the 0 wagon-body. I
C is an outside plate attached to the end of the seat A, and extending downward so as to lap over the outer edge of the top rail, B.
D is an in side plate, attached to the end piece, A, extending down over the inner edge of the rail B, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.. On the inside of the plate D is a spring, 6, riveted to the plate at its upper end, and reaching down so as to lap over the edge of the rail B, as shown in Fig. 3. Its lower end is made of a curved form, so as to fit into a groove or channel, B, in the rail.
F is a set-screw turning in a hollow thread in the plate D, and pressing against the spring E to force it into the groove B.
The operation of our improvement is as follows: WVhen itis desired to move the seat the screw F is loosened and the seat slid along the top rail to any required position. While being moved it isheld on the rail by the lower lip of the plate C. The screw F is then turned in, which presses the spring into the channel B and holds the seat from being moved along the rail or from being lifted up or loosened in any way.
To detach the seat entirely it is only necessary to fully turn back the screw, when the seat can he lifted OK the side rails.
Instead of the seat sliding upon the top rail of the side, a separate rail can be attached upon the inside of the side of the wagon-body, as is sometimes done, our improvement being applicable to any form of sliding wagon-seat.
.What we claim as our invention is- The combination of the plates C and D, the spring E, and screw F with the end support A of a wagon-seat, and the rail B, provided with the groove B, substantially as described.
