Referring to the drawings it will be seen that the improved heel scouring roll comprises a main body part I and a complementary part 2 which two parts are hinged together at 3. The part I has a substantially semi-circular rim portion 4 and a hub which are connected by an interor Zpaper, before completing thBI- j losure as aforesaid. v 1 if: To enable the slidable latch member I1 to be forcibly depressed manually to effect release of vening integral web 6 constituting aside cover for the roll. The hub 5 extends wholly from the inner face of the side cover 6. The hinged part 2 is also formed with a substantially semi-circular rim portion 1 adapted to complement the rim portion 4 of the part I and thereby provide a virtually continuous circular rim upon the parts being closed and latched together as shown in Figure 1. As in a heel-scouring roll of conventional construction, the appropriate end of the rim portion 4 is bifurcated at 8 to receive an intertting lug 9 formed on the opposing end of the rim portion 1, the spaced limbs of the bifurcation and also the lug being drilled to receive a hinge pin loriveted over atits ends. Moreover, the opposite ends of the rim portions 4 and 1 `are provided, in accordance with normal practice, with spikes I I and I 2 arranged to engage in holes or recesses I3 and I4 respectively upon closure of the roll. The opposite ends of the strip abrasive cloth or paper (not shown) are impaled upon and retained by the said spikes.
- The outer side of the hub` 5 is formed integrally with a laterally extending lug or ear I5 which is longitudinally bored at I6, tangentially with respect to the hub, to receive a slidable latch member I1. The bore I6 is closed at its inner end. The latch member I1 is fashioned from a short length of steel rod of circular cross-section and at its outer, i. e. operative, end is formed with a protruding single tooth I8. To maintain it in its correct position angularly within the bore I6, the slidable latch member I1 is provided with a lateral pin I9 arranged, as shown in Figures 2 and 3, to work in a guide slot formed in the lug or ear I5. The inner end of the latch member I1,is axially recessed to accommodate one end of a compression spring 2| the opposite end of which is arranged to bear on the opposing closed end of the bore I6. The spring 2| therefore normally urges the tooth I 8 into its fully projected position shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3, and depression ofthe latch member I1 takes place against the spring action. For co-operation with the toothed latch member I1 there is provided a complementarily toothed latch member 22 which is xecLe. g. by rivets 23, to the hinged part 2. The said member 22 is made of hardened metal and is formed with circumferentially spaced front and rear catch teeth 24 and 25 respectively. Thus, when closing the roll by movement of the hinged part 2 towards the main body part I, the front catch tooth 24 will rst snap into engagement with the tooth I8 to hold the roll partially closed, such engagement being permitted by relative movement of the slidable latch member I1 first inwardly against, and then outwardly under,
the action of the spring 2|, whereupon the rear catch tooth 25 will similarly snap into engagement with the tooth I8 securely to lock the part 2 in its fully closed position. In short, the closure of the roll is eiected in two stages, this being advantageous in so far as it enables the operator,Y
atthe termination of the first stage, to pause and,
with the roll held partly open, finally check thetting and alignment of the strip abrasive cloth the hinged part 2 and in turn permit the roll to be opened, as occasion demands, there is provided, in accordance with the characteristic .feature of this invention, a bell crank lever 26 which is fulcrumed upon a screw 21 screwed into a laterally protuberant boss 28 on the hub 5. The lever 26 is disposed in a plane at right angles to the side cover 6. The inner arm 29 of the said bell crank lever 26 is furnished with a cylindrical stud 30 (or a roller) which projects inwardly from the side of the lever through a slot 3I formed in the wall of the longitudinally bored lug or ear I5 and thence into a transverse recess 32 cut in the adjacent side of the slidable latch memberl I1. The arm 29 is movable up and down with arecess 33 formed in the side of the lug or ear I5. The outer arm 34 of the bell crank lever 26 is formed'integrally with a push button 35 arranged to be located in a circular hole 36 (see Figures 2 and 4) formed in Va side cover plate 31. The plate 31 is centrally dished and is removably secured to the outer end of the hub 5 by means of screws 38(Figure 4). The push button 35 lies practically flush withthe outer face of the side cover plate 31. By subjecting the push button to lateral pressure, inwardly, by the thumb or linger, the inner arm 2,9 of the bell crank lever is caused to press, through the medium of the stud 30, upon the slidable latch mem. ber I1 which latter as a consequenceiswithdrawn from engagement with the latch member 22 against the action of the compression spring 2|. Conversely, upon release of the push button 35, the slidable latch member I1 will automatically. resume its projected position under the reaction of the compressed spring and the bell crank lever will simultaneously be restored to its normal in-l operative position shown in Figures 2 and 3.
The roll is completed, in the customary manner, by the application theretov of a band of felt 39 which may conveniently be glued or otherwise suitably combined with an inner band 40 of leather which isv in turn riveted to a thin steel strip 4I. The opposed ends of the .said
V strip are turned inwardly, as depicted in Figure 5, toprovide lugs42( which are formedwith holes 43 corresponding in position with the spikes II and I2 and the holes or recesses I3 and I4. The strip abrasive cloth or paper is placed around the felt 39 and is held by the spikes.
Now, before theends of theabrasive strip can be impaled ,upon the spikes II and I2, these ends must, of course, first be turned down over the ends of the felt 39 to oppose the aforemenf' tioned lugs 42. If, as sometimes happens, the` abrasive strip is somewhat wider than the rimof the roll, it would, unless special provision were:
made, be diflicult, if not impossible, satisfactorily to tuck the ends of the strip down between the side cover 6 and the cover plate 31 at the location concerned. With a view to facilitating the turning down of theV ends of an abrasive strip,l
What I claim then is:
