July 5, 11949. A. M. RASMUSSEN BLOCK MOLD Filed June 2, 1945 845M555 BY ATTO IyEY Patented July 5, 1949 UN! TED STATES NT OF Fl CE.

Application June 2; 1945; Serial No. 597,246
1- Claims (01. as -r211);
This inventionrelates generally to plastic blmk and earthenware" apparatus, and more particul'arlyto molds for receiving a cementitious or plastic material having sufiicient cohesion to retain the shape given it by the mold upon removal of thelatter from the material.
It is an object of this invention to provide a mold particularly adapted, although not necessarily, for molding blocks from cementitious material for building walls, retaining walls and similar structures, which mold is structurally characterized in a simple manner enabling undercut locking grooves to be molded in the side faces of the blocks for the locking of coats of plaster, cement stucco, or other surface finishing mate-- rial to the blocks when assembled into a wall, to the end of enabling such outside and inside surface coatings to be directly applied to the wall without the use of separate metal lath, paperbacked lathing, or wood lath, thus producing a considerable saving in the cost of a wall, as well as expediting the construction thereof.
It is another purpose of this invention: to provide a mold of the above described character whose sides and ends are relatively movable in a manner to permit the mold to be expanded or released from the molded block immediately after pouring, and whose elements for forming the aforesaid locking grooves are capable of being readily withdrawn clear of the molded grooves in the block faces, so as to leave the block free for opening of the mold, with the locking grooves perfectly formed and intact.
It is a further purpose of this invention to provide a mold with whose sides and ends a removable core is adapted to be accurately positioned to form a hollow block with side and end walls of predetermined thicknesses, and an opening through the block from top to bottom for -21:- tion with other identical blocks in producing dead .air spaces in the wall to act as an insulating medium for same.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the combinations, arrangements and functional relationships of elements as set forth in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing,
Figure 1 is a plan view, partly in section, of one form of block mold embodying this invention;
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line 33 of Figure 2; and
2'; Figure 4 is a perspective view of the product embodying this invention.
Referring specifically to the drawing, the invention in its illustrated e'mbodiment comprises an open-topped bottomle'ss 'form- F which may be constructed of weed or metal toprovide flat, rectangular side walls 'l-lland H, and fiat, rectan'gular'e'nd walls 02 and [3, the side wall It) being pivotauy connected at it's ends to the end walls 12 and I3 by suitablehinges I 4 and t5, respectively; One end" of the side wall II is pivotally connected to'the endwall 13' by a suitable hinge F6 and is adapted to be latched at its other end by a pull type latch- I to the end wall F2, to releasably retain the form rigidly in itscl'os'ed positionas shown, wherein the right angularly disposed ends of the side walls I!) and Iltiightl'y abut the inside surfaces of the end walls [2 and I3 to maintain the form in perfectly rectangular formation.
The form is adapted to rest upon a suitable flat pallet or baseand is adapted to freely receive a removable core 21 which latter will also rest upon thepallet 2W. The-core may be'constl'ucted of Wood or metal and is of generally rectangular contour and of sufficient height to project above the top surface of the form for convenient grasping of a handle 22 to place and remove the core. Centering arms 23, 23 and 24, 24 project from the Sides and ends, respectively, of the core, and are provided with depending stops 25 and 26 respectively, which are adapted to engage the side and end walls H], H, l2 and I3, to maintain the core in a predetermined spaced relation to such walls in order to mold the block E (Figure 4) with side walls 21 and end walls 28 of predetermined thicknesses, and with an opening 29 extending through the block from top to bottom.
The end walls I 2 and I 3 of the form F are provided on their inner sides with projections 30 and 3|, respectively, extending from top to bottom of such walls and adapted to mold recesses 32 in the end walls 28 of the block B for the reception of a cement key (not shown), or the passage of a reinforcing rod during construction of a wall composed of such blocks.
Co-acting with the sides and ends of the form F are two elements G of identical construction, for molding dovetailed or other undercut locking grooves 33 in the exterior surfaces of the side walls 21 of the block. Each of these elements G is composed of a plurality of molding bars 35 having opposite edges beveled as shown at 36 in Figure 3, and provided with guide ribs 31 coextensive in length therewith. These molding free end portions of the bars finally seating in 1 pockets 44 and 45 in the end walls when the elements occupy the fully inserted position shown in Figures 1 and 2, all to the end of rigidly supporting the elements G in the operation of the invention which is as follows:
With the parts of the form F in the assembled and closed position shown in the drawing, cement mortar or other plastic material to be used, is poured into the form, tamped, and leveled ofi flush with the top surface of the side and end walls. The mixture used is intended to be sufficiently stiff as to be non-slumping, thus permitting the core 2| to be immediately removed and the elements G to be withdrawn, leaving the dovetailed grooves 33 accurately molded in the side faces of the block B, following which the latch I1 is released and the form opened as indicated in broken lines in Figure 1, to leave the molded block supported by the pallet 20, upon removal of the form therefrom.
The form can now be reused for the molding of another block, by providing another one of the pallets 20, which operation can be repeated to mold as many blocks as desired. The completed block B with its central opening 29 forming an air space, its recesses 32 providing for cement plugs or keys between the blocks of each row when laid in mortar to form a wall as well as enabling reinforcing rods to pass between blocks, and its grooves 33 providing means to securely lock stucco or plaster coats to the wall without extraneous lathing or furring of any kind, greatly facilitates construction of an outside and inside finished wall, and materially reduces the cost thereof.
I claim:
In a block mold, two side walls and two end walls adapted to define an open-topped bottomless form of rectangular contour; means hingedly connecting said walls at three corners of the form, with the fourth corner thereof left free; means for releasably connecting said walls at said fourth corner of the form to provide a rigid openable enclosure adapted to be placed on a pallet for the molding of a block in the form; a core placed in the form from the top thereof; centering arms projecting from the core and having depending stops engaging the side and end walls to maintain the core in a predetermined spaced relation to said walls; one of said side Walls having a plurality of parallel, longitudinally extending guide channels, and said end walls having openings and pockets, respectively, coacting with said channels; a plurality of molding bars having guide ribs; a handle to which one end of each of said bars is secured to connect the bars in parallelism for insertion as a unit through said openings of the one end wall, with said ribs received in said channels and the free ends of said bars seating in said pockets of the other end wall so as to rigidly support the molding bars in the form for the molding of grooves in an exterior face of the block.
