JAMES F. BROWER, ()F CORAL, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO T. G. NOR'IHRUP, OF SAME PLACE.
MACHINE FOR FORMING THREADSON SHEET-METAL CYLINDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,533, dated September 27, 1881.
Application filed .Tune 17, 1881.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES F. BROWER, of Coral, Montcalm county, Michigan, haveinvented an Improvement in Machines for FormingIhreads on Sheet-Metal Cylinders, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of this invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction ofdevices employed in forming screwthreads upon the ends of sheet-metal cylinders, bymeans of which two or more sections of such pipes or cylinders may be readily joined together; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction of the parts and their various combinations, all as more fully hereinafter set forth.
Figure l is a vertical central longitudinal section. Fig.2 is a side elevation of the standard with the gear-wheels removed. Fig. dis a horizontal sectionon line as :10, Fig. 1.
In the accompanyingdrawings, which form a partof this specification, A represents a proper base, from which rise the standards B and O, the upper portions of which are bifurcated. Between the bifurcations are placed the stationary boxes D D, which carry the shaft E. Upon one end of this shaft E is secured a corrugated or screw worm-wheel, F, while upon the opposite end of said shaft is secured the geared wheel Gr, there being a spring, to, interposed between the inner face of such wheel and the box D, as shown.
H and I represent'sliding boxes capable of a vertical adjustmentin their respective standards by means of the set-screws J J, which are tapped through the bars K, the said bars bein g secured to the upper ends of the standards. Within these boxes H I are secured the rocking boxes L, through which the upper shaft, M, is properly journ aled. Upon one end of this shaft M is secured a similar worm-wheel, N, to that upon the shaft E, but with the pitch of its thread running in an opposite direction, while the other end of the shaft M carries a gearwheel, 0, and a crank-handle, P, by which motion is communicated to the parts. A spring,
(No model.)
b, is interposed between the wheel 0 and the box H.
In practice, the pipe or cylinder in which is to be formed the thread is slipped over the wheel F, abutting against the standard C, and the wheel N is gradually forced down upon it by means of the screw J, the shafts and their wheels being meanwhile rotated by means of the crank-handle, thus crimping a thread in the pipe operated upon. The rocking boxes J prevent the binding of the shaft M in its adjustment, while the springs a and I) allow the twoworm-wheels. N and F to, properly engage with each other.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. In a screw-thread-bending machine, the base A, provided with bifurcated standards B C, in which are placed the bearings D H I L, and the shafts E M, in combination with the stationary bearings D D, sliding bearings H I, rockingbearings L L, rotating shafts E M, and the spirally-grooved wheels F N, substantially as specified.
2. A device for forming screw-threads upon sheet-metal cylinders, wherein the upper shaft is supported near its forward end within an oscillating box, which is, in turn, supported within a Vertically-reciprocatin g box, substantially as and for the purposes described.
3. In a screw-thread-bending machine, and in combination with the standards B 0' and shaftsE M, carrying the worm-wheels F N, the vertically adj ustable boxes H I, oscillating boxes L, gear-wheels O G, and the springs to b, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. In a device for forming screw threads upon sheet-metal cylinders, and in combination with the standards B C and shafts E M, carrying the worm-wheels F and N, the vertically-adjustable boxes H and I, and oscillatingboxes L, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
JAMES F. BROWER.
