1 Claim.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in ash receivers, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a device of the character herein described, wherein the cigarette holder or rest may be covered when the ash receiver is not in use, so that the usual accumulation of foreign matter thereon may be obscured from view.

A further object of the invention is to provide a cigarette rest in which the cigarette may be easily applied or removed.

An additional object of the invention is to provide an ash receiver which is simple in construction, pleasing in appearance, and which will readily lend itself to economical manufacture.

With the above more important objects in view, and such other objects as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the invention with the cover of the receptacle removed and with the receptacle partially broken away to illustrate the cigarette holder, and

Figure 2 is an elevational view of the holder per se.

Like characters of reference are used to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.

Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention consists of an ash receiver designated by the general reference character ill, the same including in its construction a suitable receptacle l2 provided with a remover cover M which is hollow and consitutes a continuation of the receptacle when it is positioned thereon.

A cigarette holder designated generally by the reference character It embodies in its construction a substantially V-shaped member composed of a pair of juxtaposed straps l8. These are secured together at one end thereof along a portion of their length as at 20 and provide a pair of free end portions 22.

If desired, the V-shaped member may be formed integrally from one piece of material, rather than by securing together the aforementioned straps IS.

The end portions 22 are angulated in a mutually divergent relationship and form a V-shaped seat 24 as will be clearly apparent from the accompanying drawings. The included angle between the portions 22 should be approximately 30 degrees although a greater or a lesser angle may be employed. The free extremities 26 of the portions 22 are somewhat inturned and when the invention is placed in use, the cigarette is pressed downwardly through the space between the extremities 26 into the V-shaped seat l4. During the passage of the cigarette between the extremities 25, the cigarette will be somewhat compressed, but will tend to expand itself to its original roundness when it is deposited in the seat 24. It will be apparent that in this manner, the cigarette will be firmly and securely held in the seat.

If the cigarette is left burning, it will become automatically extinguished as soon as the lighted end thereof reaches the lateral edges of the strap portions 22.

Finally, it will be observed that by virtue of its firm retension, the cigarette will be prevented from falling from the rest, as frequently occurs in ash trays of conventional design when the progressively diminishing length of the burning cigarette causes the same to become unbalanced.

The secured together portions 20 of the straps I8 are provided with laterally projecting wings 28 by means of which the entire holder l6 may be secured to the inner surface of the receptacle l2 adjacent the upper edge of the latter, so that the end portions 26 of the straps l8 project above the receptacle into the cover l4 when the cover is in position thereon.

It should be understood that when the invention is placed in use, the rest may become coated with tar accumulated from burning cigarettes, and the structural arrangement above described is primarily intended to obscure the cigarette rest from view.

It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be clearly understood from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is considered unnecessary.

While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

What I claim as my invention is:

An ash receiver comprising in combination, a receptacle, a cover removably positioned on said receptacle, a pair of juxtaposed straps secured together at one end portion thereof, the remaining end portions of said straps being angulated in mutually divergent relation and terminating in inwardly arcuated extremities adapted to retain a cigarette therebetween, and a pair of laterally projecting wings provided on the secured end portions of said straps, said wings being secured to the inner surface of said receptacle and the arcuated end portions of said straps projecting above said receptacle into said cover.
