This invention relates to a combined boat and filter for use in the determination of graphite, carbon, and other insoluble products to be subsequently subjected to high temperatures.
For the purpose of making the necessary tests, it is essentiaI that the boat and filter be capable of withstanding high temperatures while a stream of oxygen is passing thereover. It is essential, also, that following the filtering operation, the entire device be capable of insertion into a combustion tube or flue.
Heretofore, the determination of graphite, carbon, etc., has been inaccurate and tedious. It has been necessary usually to first filter out the material and thereafter remove this material and place it in a boat prior to being subjected to the high temperature desired.
The present invention has for its object the simplification of the procedure by combining a filter with the boat and so proportioning it that it can be inserted readily into a combustion tube or flue and there is no necessity of removing the separated material before subjecting it to heat.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.

Referring to the figures by characters of reference, l designates an elongated boat in the form of a trough having its walls tapering downwardly to a slight extent so as to merge into a fiat bottom 2 provided with an outlet opening 3. Located within this boat and resting at its edges on the downwardly converging walls thereof is a screen of the combined filtering material perforated metal. This screen can be joined to the walls of the boat by welding, as indicated at 5 or the entire structure might be pressed from sheet metal and forced into position within the boat in an obvious way. The screen serves to support a layer 6 of metal fibre such as asbestos or any other suitable filtering material capable of withstanding intense heat. It also cooperates with the bottom of the boat to define a chamber with which the opening 3 communicates.
The boat and the screen are to be formed of nickel or a nickel alloy capable of withstanding any temperature to which the boat would be subjected during tests.
In practice a drain tube D is extended from the opening 3 into a container or retort R from which a suction tube T is extended. This drain tube constitutes the sole support for the boat. The mixture to be tested for graphite or carbon is directed into the boat and subjected to the action of suction. Thus there would be carried off all parts of the mixture, Whether it be gaseous or liquid, with the exception of the graphite, carbon or other insoluble ingredient or ingredients to be tested. These will be retained by the filtering material and thereafter, by detaching the tube D from the boat and placing the boat, with the filtering material and the accumulated solids which have been separated, into a combustion tube, the boat and its contents can be subjected to a high temperature whereby the desired test can be made on the accumulated solids without necessitating any intermediate steps wherein said solids have been transferred from a filter to a boat.
What is claimed is:
A combined boat and filter for the determination of carbon, including an elongated narrow container having downwardly converging side walls merging into a flat bottom, thereby to be insertable directly into a combustion tube relatively small in diameter, said container being formed with a central outlet in its bottom, a perforated filter-supporting metal screen within the container, supported at all its edges by the side walls of the container and spaced substantially above the bottom of the container, the screen, when covered by a filter material, defining in cooperation with the bottom a vacuum chamber 4 formed preferably of opening through the central opening, and a drain tube supporting the container, the Wall of the central opening and the upper end of the drain tube being adapted for removable seating of the container upon the drain tube, the drain tube, when positioned in a, supporting structure, constituting the sole support for the container.
