4The rear-.end of the .barrel has a conical seat -23 which receives .a correspondingly shaped conical portion Zi of -a plug25, shown particularly inaFigs. l and 5. The-plug hase cylindrical opening therethrough through which extends the tube I5. The rear end 26 of the plug 25 is spaced from the disk 26 and the ferrule 2| is rotatably mounted around the portion 21 of the plug 25. The plug 25 is xedly secured in the conical seat 23 by any suitable adhesive.
The ferrule 2| has formed on the inner end thereof a bead 36 which terminates in a ange 3|. The plug 25 has formed therein intermediate the portion 21 and the conical surface 24, a notch 33. A conical split ring 34 is secured around the conical portion 35 formed by the notch. When the ferrule is to be secured in place it is moved over the portion 21 and the flange 3| contracts the split ring 25 until the edge of the ange has passed beyond the split ring, whereupon the ring expands inside the ila-nge 3|. Thus the ferrule is held in place.
The lead is fed through the spiral tube I by means of a lead propelling member shown in detail in Figs. 6 and 7. This member has an arcuate portion 46 and a lug 4| extending laterally from one end of the arcuate portion 46. Viewed from the rear, as shown in Fig. 7, the arcuate portion forms wings 42 and 43. The end 44 of the arcuate portion 46, as shown particularly in Figs. 1 and 2 at 45, is curved or pointed.
The barrel I6, as shown in Fig. 4, is provided with an arcuate groove 56 throughout the major portion of its length for guiding the portion 40 of the lead .propelling and feeding member along the outer surface of the spiral tube I5. The lug 4| of the feeding member extends through the spiral slot formed in the tube and engages the rear end of the lead, thus feeding the lead through the tube I5, as shown in Fig. 2.
The plug 25 is provided with a, pair of ledges or shelves 5| and 52 which are adapted to engage the wings 42 and 43 on the leadpropelling and feeding member 46 when when this member is retracted to the extreme rear end of its path of travel, as shown in Fig. 1. As the wings i2 and 43 engage the ledges or shelves 5| and 52, the member 46 will move laterally relative to the tube I5, thus withdrawing the lug 4| from the tube, leaving the rear end of the tube open.
The rear end of the ferrule 2| is normally closed by a reversible eraser cap 55 having an eraser 56 at one end thereof and an ornamental portion 51 at the other end thereof. Intermediate the ends there is formed a. laterally extending collar portion 58.
When the eraser cap is removed from the -ferrule it will be noted that the outer end of the tube I5 is open to receive a lead which is dropped into the opening at the outer end thereof and will drop by gravity into the tube I5 until it engages the rear end of the lead section still in the pencil. After the lead has been dropped in the cap can be replaced and the ferrule 2| is rotated, thus rotating the disk 26 and tube I5. As the tube I5 is rotated the feeding lug 4| will move inwardly into feeding position in the tube as the wings 42 and 43 ride down the inclined ledges or shelves 5| and 52. be fed through the tip in the usual manner.
In the form of the invention illustrated in Fig. l0 the pencil can be loaded without removing any cap. In this form the cap is formed in two sections 66 and 6|.
4 tion 66 of the cap and engages the rear edge of the locking ring 63. When section 66 of the cap is placed on the plug 65 and is pushed thereon, the ring 63 contracts into the space around the conical portion 64 until it can snap into the annular recess or groove 62.
'Ihe rear end of the spiral tube 16 extends through the plug 65 and through the portion 1| of the section 66 of the cap and is swaged outwardly or ared at its end 12. The outer or end section 6| is then cemented to section 66. Section 6| has a central opening 13 alined with the tube 16 and flared as at 14 to facilitate the insertion of the lead in the cap and tube.
Thus when the pencil requires a rell, the lead is dropped into the opening in the cap and it is not necessary to remove any cap or other parts.
From the foregoing description it Will be evident that the number of operative parts of the pencil described is held to a minimum and that the lead can be easily and quickly replenished simply by retracting the lead feeding member and dropping the lead into the outer open end of the tube I5.
A slightly different form of the invention is illustrated in Figs. 11 to 16 inclusive. In these figures a barrel 86 has a reduced front end 8| on which is rotatably mounted a sleeve 82 having a tip 83 at the outer end thereof. In Fig. l1 the rear end of the sleeve 82 is shown as bent inwardly at 84 to t a correspondingly formed portion 85 on the barrel.
The spiral tube 86 fits tightly in the front end of the tip 83 and extends rearwardly through a central opening in the barrel but terminates at its rear end to leave a space 81 between a plug 88 and the rear end of the barrel.
A clutch tube 89 is xed in the forward end of the spiral tube 36 and extends through the tip 83, the outer end of the ,clutch tube, as shown at 96, being split to form resilient ngers engageable with the lead 9| `as the lead is fed through the tube 89.
The lead is fed through the spiral tube by means of a feeding member which is shown in detail in Figs-15 and 16. This member has a downwardly extending lug 96 adapted to t in the spiral slot in the sleeve 86 and has laterally extending wings or ledges 91 and 98. The rear end of the member 95 has arcuate upwardly extending lugs 99 and |66 and a lug |6| extends inwardly intermediate the portions 99 and 66 and has a beveled end |62 forming a sharp edge. The lug |6| engages the rear end of the lead and feeds the lead through the sleeve 86. The feeding member 95 moves along-the spiral slot by reason of the engagement of the lug 96 in the slot. This feeding movement is accomplished by rotating the sleeve 82 on the forward end of the barrel or relative to the barrel. This causes the spiral tube 86 to rotate relative to the barrel. The feeding member 95 is held from rotation since the portions 91 and 98 of the feeding member are disposed in a longitudinal channel |65 formed in the barrel and communicating with the central opening therein. 1
After the lead has been fed to its forward eX- treme of movement, as shown in Fig. 11, in which the front end |66 of the feeding member 95 engages a stop shoulder or abutment |61 formed in the barrel, the feeding member is retracted by a reverse rotation of the spiral in the barrel.

In-Ythe embodiment lofthe invention shown in Figs.. 11 to 16, the lead can be easily and quickly dropped linto the opening-|| 5 after the feeding member 95 -has been retracted toythe position sho-Wn in Fig. 12-and the feeding movement will then cause the edge |02 to break the lead to proper length and thereafter tofeed the lead longitudinally through the spiral. It Willvbe obvious that in this embodiment the movement ofthe operative parts of the pencil has been reduced'toa minimum and that the useY of the pencil has been simplified since it is not necessary tounscrewor'open upthe rear end of the pencil in order to replenishthe leads but merely to re- .tract the feeding member,drop inthe lead, and then start ythe feeding member on its operative movement.
Although certain specific embodiments of the invention have been particularly shown and described. it Will .be understood that the Yinvention is capable .of vfurther modification and that furtherchanges in the construction and in the arrangement `of the various .cooperating parts may' bemade without .departing from the .spirit .or scope of the invention, as expressed in `the 4following claims.

In va mechanical pencil, a barrel, a pencil supporting and guiding tube therein, open at both ends, a cap at the rear end of the barrel, said cap having an opening alined with the rear end of the tube, means coacting with the tube for feeding the lead therethrough and means in the cap engageable by said feeding means in its retracted position for moving said means out of feeding position.

In a mechanical pencil, a barrel, a pencil supporting and guiding tube therein, open at both ends, a cap at the rear end of the barrel, said cap having an opening alined with the rear end of the tube, means coacting with the tube for feeding the lead therethrough, and means Operable when saidfeeding means reaches its retracted position for moving said feeding means out of operative position.

In a mechanical pencil, a barrel having a longitudinal internal Achannel or groove, arcuate in cross section, atube in said barrel having a spiral slot, and a lead feeding member for feeding the lead through said tube, said lead feeding member having an arcuate cross section dimensioned to t in said groove in the barrel and having a lug movable in the tube to feed the lead.

In a mechanical pencil, a barrel, a plug secured at the rear end thereof and having a central bore therethrough, a tip at the front end of the barrel, a spiral lead supporting and feeding tube extending from the tip through said plug, a disk secured to the rear end of the tube, a ferrule secured over the plug and rotatable thereon, said disk being fixed in the ferrule, and means mounted in the barrel and movable longitudinally therein to feed the lead through the tube. j
18.*1Ina mechanical pencil, a barrel, a tube therein having a spiralvslot, means adapted to coact with `the tube to feed lead therethrough, means at the rear end of the tube for moving said feeding means out of operative position when said feeding means is moved to its retracted position whereby a new leadxcan be inserted in the tube, and means on said feeding means engageable with excess lead extending rearwardly beyond said feeding means for severing the excess lead as the feeding means is moved into operative feeding position. f

In a mechanical pencil, a barrel, open at both ends, a lead supporting and guiding tube mounted in the barrel and open at both ends, means coacting with the barrel and tube' for feeding lead through the tube, and means for moving said feeding means out of the tube when said means reaches its retracted position, whereby a lead refill can be dropped into the open rear end thereof and into the tube.
20. In lal mechanical pencil, a barrel, a tube therein having a spiral slot, means adapted to coact with the tube to feed lead therethrough, means at the rear end of the tube for moving said feeding means out of operative position when said feeding means is moved to its retracted position whereby a new lead can be inserted in the tube, means on said feeding means engageable with excess lead extending rearwardly beyond said feeding means for serving the excess lead as the yfeeding means is moved into operative feeding position, and means in the barrel engageable with said feeding means for forcing said severing means inwardly to sever the excess lead.
21. In a mechanical pencil, a barrel having a channel, a sleeve rotatable on the barrel and having a tip at the front end thereof, a tube having a spiral slot fixed to the tip and extending rearwardly throughout the length of the barrel and open at both ends, and lead feeding means mounted on the tube and coacting with the channel to feed the lead through the tube on rotation of the sleeve relative to the barrel.
22. In a mechanical pencil, a barrel having a channel, a sleeve rotatable on the barrel and having a tip at the front end thereof, a tube having a spiral slot xed to the tip and extending rearwardly throughout the length of the barrel and open at both ends, and lead feeding means lmounted on the tube and coacting with the channel to feed the lead through the tube on rotation of the sleeve relative to the barrel, said lead feeding means having a portion movable into the tube to engage and feed thev lead.
23. In a mechanical pencil, a barrel having a channel, a sleeve rotatable on the barrel and having a tip at the front end thereof, a tube having a spiral slot xed to the tip and extending rearwardly throughout the length of the barrel and open at both ends, lead feeding means mounted on the t-ube and coacting with the channel to feed the lead through the tube on rotation of the sleeve relative to the barrel, and means at the rear end of the barrel to Withdraw said portion from the path of the lead when the feeding means is retracted at the rear end of the barrel.
24. In a mechanical pencil, a barrel open at both ends and having a channel, a sleeve rotatable on the barrel and having a tip at the front end thereof, a tube having a spiral slot fixed to the tip and extending rearwardly throughout the length of the barrel and open at both ends, lead feeding means mounted on the tube and coacting with the channel to feed the lead through the tube on rotation of the sleeve relative to the barrel, and means at the rear end of the barrel to withdraw said portion from the path of the lead when the feeding means is retracted at the rear end of the barrel.
25. In a mechanical pencil, a barrel, a pencil supporting and guiding tube therein, open at both ends and having a spiral slot, a cap at the rear end of the barrel, said cap having an opening alinecl with the rear end of the tube, and means coacting with and having a portion extending through the slot in the tube for feeding the lead therethrough.

In a mechanical pencil, a barrel, a pencil supporting and guiding tube therein, means for feeding lead through said tube, and a cap at the outer end of the barrel having means therein engageable by the feeding means in its retracted position for moving said feeding means out of feeding position.
27. In a mechanical pencil, a barrel, a pencil supporting and guiding tube therein, open at both ends, a cap at the outer end of the barrel having means for supporting the outer end of the tube, means for feeding lead through the tube, and means in the cap and engageable by the feeding means in its retracted position for moving said feeding means out of feeding position.
28. In a -mechanical pencil, a barrel, a pencil supporting and guiding tube therein, open at both ends, a cap at the other end of the barrel having an opening therethrough alined with the rear end of the tube and having means for supporting the outer end of the tube, means for feeding lead through the tube, and means in the cap and engageable by the feeding means in its retracted position for moving said feeding means out of feeding position.
