This invention relates to combs provided with looking teeth for locking the hair between the teeth of the comb.

Objects of the invention include the provision of a comb having a series of conventional fixed teeth and a series of alternately arranged movable teeth, the latter being secured to a sliding bar for manual manipulation thereof so as to simultaneously space the teeth as in a conventional comb and selectively to slide the movable teeth toward the fixed teeth to lock the hair therebetween, to hold the comb in place on the head and to hold the hair in desired position.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a view in front elevation of the comb according to the invention, parts being in section;

Fig. 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1;

Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1;

Fig. 4 is a section on line 4-4 of Fig. 1; and

Fig. 5 is a view illustrating the teeth in locked condition.

As shown in Fig. 1, there is a comb l9 having a back I 2 and a series of relatively widely spaced fixed teeth M. The comb back I2 is hollow forming a chamber as at I6, and between teeth [4 there are provided slots I8 extending between the roots of the teeth 14 and the hollow chamber [6 providing for communication between the chamber and the region of the teeth.

The hollow back 12 receives and contains a longitudinally slidable bar 2|] to which there is secured a series of teeth 22 each one of which extends thru a slot l8 in parallel alinement with teeth 14. It will be obvious that teeth 22 are capable of being positioned intermediate the fixed teeth or in a close relation therewith as shown in Fig. 5, so as to lock strands of hair which lie between the closely adjacent fixed and movable teeth.

The comb back I2 is provided with a slot 24 extending from the hollow chamber IE to an exterior side surface. The bar is provided with an extension 26 located in the slot 24 and terminating in a fingerpiece 28. This fingerpiece extends past the ends of slots 24 as shown in Fig. 1, and is provided with means latching the bar 29 in either of its two positions. This means may comprise a projection 30 which is to be located in either of two recesses 32 in the side of the comb back.

The material of which the comb is made will have suificient resiliency to allow sliding of the fingerpiece and therefore of the bar 29 and at the same time yieldingly latch the bar in either of the two positions as determined by the depressions 32.

From the above description, it will be seen that this invention provides a novel comb capable of being locked in position in the hair by a very simple manipulation of the fingerpiece and the sliding bar, and that the hair will be held in the desired position without danger of loss of the comb.

Having thus described my invention and the advantages thereof, I do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed, otherwise than as set forth in the claim, but what I claim is:

A comb comprising a back, a longitudinal chamber therein, a series of fixed teeth extending from said back, said back being provided with slots between the teeth, said slots forming openings between the chamber and the teeth, a bar in the chamber, said bar being longitudinally movable in the general plane of the teeth, comb teeth secured to said bar and projecting outwardly from the comb back thru said slots in parallel relation with the fixed teeth, said back being provided with a slot in a side surface thereof, and means for moving said bar longitudinally in said chamber to move the bar-teeth to and from locking position relative to the fixed teeth, said means comprising an extension integral with the bar and working in the side slot, an exposed finger piece on the extension, said finger piece overlapping the comb back side adjacent the slot, and a detent on the finger piece cooperating with recesses in the comb back to latch the bar in either position.
