This invention relates to new and useful improvements in neckties of the four-in-hand type.
The prime cbjecl; cf the invention is to provicle a necktie o1" this kind which may be manufactured without stitches for joining the infolded side sections alcng the broader end of the necktie from the tip of the latter up to or almost up to the neckbancl portion of the sie. The principle of the invention may be applied to the smaller end of the tie; but the advantages contemplgatecl are cf most striking value inthe case of the broader end of the tie.

These stepped parts are so proportioned and arranged that, when the usual infoldings a1: the sides of the tie are made, one of said stepped parts on one cf such infoldings is interfolclable With Chat one of saicl stepped parts oppositely presented by the einher of said infoldings, ancl another of saicl stepped parts on the last mentionecl infolding is interfolclable with that one of said stepped parts oppositely presented by the other of sa1'd infolclings.
An lmportant feature of the invention is that, in the case of each pair of oppositely presented steppecl parts 130 be interfolded, such pair of stepped parts is so present that one of said stepped parts constitutes what may be termed a female structure or recepor for the opposite steppecl part, so that the latter acts as a male element relative to such receptor; and, at oho same time, pairs of oppositely matching stepped parts are so present that the receptor for one of said pairs and the male element for an adjoining one of said pairs are carried by one cf said infoldings, Whi1e the respectively complementary male element anal recepsor are carried by the other of said infoldings. Thus a plurality of oppositely restrained locking pairs are providecl; and the conjoint action of these pairs makes each locking pair properly characterizable as an interlocking means.
As a.result, when the tie is pressed the pairs of stepped and interlocking parts, interfolded pursuant to the invention, lock l;he broader end of the tie so its intended spread; laut neverthelass, when ehe tie becomes wrinkled and so needs repressing, it may be opened from the back, repressed anti fcldecl as before. In this way wrinkles can be pressed out perfectly and with a, minimum of time and expense.
If desireol, auxiliary means, such as snap fasteners or the like, may be used to detachably couple the interfolded stepped parts. These fasteners, 11 used, prcferably are so placed that there is ample room for the use of a regular iron in. pressing.
A further feature cf the invention is the provision of a plurality of blanks so shaped that one, which may be called the main blank, pro- Vides the broader end. of ehe tie and a part of th-e neck band, and the other, Which may be callecl Ehe minor blank, proVides the narrower end 01" the tie and a part of the neck band; whereby wase o1 the rich and expensive material from Which fine ties are made may be minimized, and yet the aforesaid plurality of stepped parts may be present.
Still a further feature of the invention is an arrangement of said stepped parts relative to the other po-rtions of the pair of blanks just referred to, such that one such pair of blanks after another may be so cut from a length of cloth, with one of said pairs immediately alongside 01 anal interfitting Wih another thereof that there is no waste of material at all between any two adjoining pairs.

In Fig. l there is shown a length of fabric II), cf a, selected design (not shown), selvaged along both opposite sides II and I2, and cf a width such that a plurality cf pairs cf main and minor blanks, each such pair for the making cf one tie, may be cut from the fabric II], without other waste than that inconsiderable amount indicated at I4.
In order to make very plain the repeat pattern employed three such repeats are illustrated; and 110 make the drawing readily understood a1: first glance, the pattern at the left in Fig. 1 is comparatively heavily outlined. Cutting out this repeat provides a Single piece I5; and. cutting along the broken line I6 divides the piece I5 into a main blank I'I and a minor blank I8. The short cuts or slits 20 and. 2I are also made.
The edge AB of the minor blank I8 is of the same length as the edge C-D cf the main blank I1; so that these two blanks may be matched end to end and seamed together as indicated a1; 22 in Fig. 2 thereby to make up the blank or body for the entire tie as there shown.
In Fig. 2 lines cf fold only at the broad end cf the tie are indicated, and only three cf these, which three are marked 23, 24 and 25. AI; the left side cf this view, above the fold line 23, and opposite the fold line 25, that side cf he blank is stepped in to provide one cf the aforesai d stepped parts; and above said stepped part, the same side cf the blank is further stepped in, 110 provide another of the aforesaid stepped parts. AI; the right side of Fig. 2, above the fold line 24, that; side of the blank also is stepped in, 1:0 provida still another cf the aforesaid stepped parts.
Referring 1:0 Figs. 2-7, the fold made on the line 23 provides a flap 26, which, With the adjoining flap 21, provides a receptor for the marginal length 29 of the infolding 30; said length 29, cf a width determined by the length cf the slit 2II, providing the male element for entering the receptor 28 to become finally interfolded therewith as shown in Fig. 6.
The fold macle on the line 25 provides a flap 3I, which, with the adjoining infolding '32, pro- Vides a receptor 33. The male element for entering this receptor, to becoxme interfolded therewith as shown in Fig. 7, is provided by the flap 34, Which latter is produced as the result of folding along the line 24. The unter face cf the tie is provided by the central portion 35 cf the blank. In the annexed claims, said central portion 35 will be referred 1;o as the face panel, and said infoldings 30 and 32 will be referred 130 as the side or back panels.
The hereinabove mentioned snap fasteners for the interfoldings illustratecl in Fig. 6 are shown at 36 as carried by the flap 26 and by the marginal length 29 of the infolding, or back panel, 30, and such fasteners for the interfoldings illustrated in Fig. 7 are shown ab 31 as carried bythe flap 3I and by the flap 34. As Will be understood, the respectively matching pairs cf snap fasteners will be one cf the post type and the other cf the socket type; these two types employed, for in- 4 stance, as indicated in Fig. l, where the marginal length 23 cf the back panel 30 is shown as carrying a post type fastener, and as indicated in Fig.
5 where ehe flap 34 is shown as carrying a post type fastener.
The infoldings or back panels 30 and 32 are continued above the flaps 3I and 36 up along the neck band, and there stitched in place in the usual or any desired way; and they are continued on to form at the portion 38 ab the upper end cf the blank I'I-I8 of Fig. 2 the narrow end of the tie. There said panels 30 and 32 are stitched in place in the usual or any desired way, or by one or more interfoldings cf stepped parts according t0 the principles cf thc inventlon as explained in connection with the broader end cf the tie.
A lining for the tie is not shown; but such a lining, whether cf the now favcrecl type involving the insertion cf a suitably secured resilient strip of bias-cut and hence stretchable lining material, 01 otherwise, may of course be aolded.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments cf my invention, it is 110 be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and mcdifications coming within the scope cf the invention as defined in the apr)ended claims.
Having thu5 described any invention, what I claim as new, and desire 130 secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. A necktie of the four-in-hand type comprising a body portion shaped and folded 130 present a face panel, a first back panel folded in from one side cf the face panel, a second back panel folded in from I:he other side cf the face panel, each back panel along its free side edge in the region cf a broad end of the tie being provided with a, plurallty of stepped parts, each stepped part of one back panel being opposite a stepped part of the other panel laterally cf the tie Whereby there are stepped parts in pairs across the width cf the tie, said stepped parts being so proportioned and arranged and said back panels being so additionally relatively folded lengthwise of the 'oie that; along a portion cf the length the tle coextensive with a first pair cf said stepped parts a first interlocking means for the two back panels is provided, and along a portion cf the length cf the tie coextensive with a second pair 015 said stepped parts a second interlocking means for the two back panels is provided, said first interlccking means incorporating a receptor established by a fold lengthwise of said first back panel and said first interlocklng means also incorporating a complementary male element for entry into said receptor said male element forming a part cf said second back panel, and said second interlocking means incorporating a receptor established by 3 fold lengthwise cf said second back panel and said second interlocking means also incorporating a complermentary male element for entry into' the last-namecl receptor, the last-named male element forming a part cf said first back panel.

A necktie cf the four-in-hand type, compris- Ing a body porticn shaped and foldecl to present a face panel, a first back panel folded in from one side of the face panel, a second back panel folded in from the other side cf the face panel, each back panel along its free side edge in tl 1e region of a, broad end cf the tie being providedmvith a plurality cf stepped parts, each stepped part cf one back panel beingcppgsiise; a stepped part cf the other panel laterallyof*ibe ti'e whereby there are stepped parts in pairs across the width cf the tie, said stepped parts being so proportioned and arranged and said back panels being so additionally relatively folded lengthwise of the tie that along a portion cf the length of the sie coextensiVe with a firsi: pair of said stepped parts a first interlocking means for tlr1e two back panels is provided, anal along a portion of the length of the tie coextensive with a second pair of said stepped parke a seccnd interlocking means for the two back panels is provideril, said first interlocking means incorporating a receptor established by a fold leng'ohwise cf saicl firsl; back panel and said first interlocking means also incorporating a complementary male element for entry into said receptor, said male element forming a part cf said seconcl back panel, and said second interlocking means incorporating a receptor established by a fold lengtnwise of said second back panel ancl said second interlocking means also incorporating a cornplem-entary male element for entry into the last-named receptor, the lastnamecl male element forming a part of said first back panel, each cf saicl receptors being comprised wholly cf a plurality cf p1ies cf the back panel which carries that receptor.

A necktie of the four-in-hand type, comprising a body porticn shaped and folded to present a face panel, a first back panel folded in from one side of the face panel, a second back panel folded in from the other side cf the face panel, each back panel along its free side edge in the region of a broad end of the tie belng provided with a plurality cf stepped parts, each stepped part cf one back panel being opposite a stepped part of the other panel laterally of the tie whereby there are stepped parts in pairs across the wiclth cf the tie, said stepped parts being so proportioned and arranged and said back panels be1'ng so additionally relatively folded lengthwise cf the tie that along a portlon cf the length 0f the tie coextensive with a first pair 0f said. scepped parcs a first interlocklng means for the two back panels is provided, ancl a1ong a porticn cf the length cf the tie coextensive vrith a second pair cf said stepped parts a second interlocking means for the two back panels is provideel. said first interlocking means incorporatlng a receptor established by a fold lengthwise of saicl first back panel and said first interlocking means also incorporating a complementary male element for entry into saicl recepaor, said male element formlng a part of said second back panel, said second interlocking means incorporating a receptor established by a fo1d lengthwise 0f said seccnd back panel and said second interlocking means also incorporating a complementary male element for entry into the last-named receptor, the last-named male element forming a part cf said first back panel, each cf said receptors being comprlsed wholly of a plurality of plies cf the back. panel which carries that receptor, and each receptor presenting an open mouth which faces che fold between said face panel and the back panel which carries the other receptor.

A necktie cf ehe fourdn-hand type, comprisfing a body portion shaped and folded to present a, face panel, a first back panel folded in frorn one side of the face panel, a second back panel foldecl in from the other side of the face panel, each back panel along iss free side edge in the region cf a broad end of ehe tie being provided With a plurality cf stepped parts, each stepped part of one back panel being opposite a stepped part of the other panel laterally of the hie whereby there are stepped parts in pairs across the width cf the tie, said steped pars being so proportioned and arranged and said back panels being so additionally relatively folded lengthwise of the tie that along a portion cf ehe length of the tie coextensive with a fi1st pair of said stepped parts a first interlockin=g means for the two back panels is provided, and along a portion Of the length cf the tie coextensive with a seconol pair of saicl stepped parts a second interlocking means for the two back panels :ls provided, said first interlocking means incorporating a receptor established by a folcl lengthwise cf said first back panel and said fl1'st interlocking means alsoincorporating a complementary male element for entry into said reccptor, seid male element forming a part cf said second back panel, said second interlocking means ineorporatz'ng a receptor established by a folcl lcngthwise cf said seconcl back panel and said sccond interlocking means also incorporating a complementary male element for entry into the last-named receptzor, the last-named male element forming a part of said first back panel, one cf said receptors being established on the back panel which carries the same as the results cf a Z-fold lengthwise cf said panel.

A necktie of the four-in-hand type, comprising a body portion shaped anti folded present a face panel, a first back panel folded in from one sicle cf the face panel, a second back panel folded in from the obher side of the face panel, each back panel along its free side edge in the region -of a broaol end of the tie being provicled With a plurality cf stepped parts, each steppecl part cf one back panel being opposite a sepped part cf the other panel laterally cf the tie whereby there a1e sepped parts in pairs across the width cf the tie, said stepped parts being so proportional and arranged and sald back panels being so additionally relatively folded lengthwise of the tie that along a portion 0f the length of the tie coextensive With a first pair of saicl steppecl parts a first interlocking means for ehe tWo back panels is providecl, and along a portion of the length 015 the tie coext'ensive with a second pair of said stepped parts a second interlocking means for the two back panels is provided, said first interlccking means incorporatlng a neceptor establishecl by a i0ld. lengthwise cf said first back panel and saicl first interlocking means also incorporating a complementary male element for entry into said receptor saicl male element forming a part cf said second back panel, saicl s'econd interlocking means inccrporating 3, receptor established by a io1d lengthwise of said second back panel and said second interlocking means also incorporating a complementary male element for entry into the last-namecl receptor, the last-named male elemene forming a part of said first back panel, one of said receptors being establishedon the back panel which carries the same as the result cf a V- fold lengthwise cf said panel.

A necktie of the four-in-hand type, comprising a body portion shaped and folded 130 present a face panel, a first back panel folded in from one side of the face panel, a second back panel folded in from the other side cf the face panel, each back panel along its free side edge in the region of a broad end of the tie being provided with a plu'rality cf stepped parts, each stepped part of one back panel being opposite a stepped part of the other panel laterally of the tie whereby there are stepped parts in pairs across the width of the tie, said stepped parts being so proportioned and arrangecl and said back panels being so additionally relatively folded lengthwise of the tie that along a portion of the length of the tie coextensive with a first pair of said stepped parts a first interlocking means for the two back panels is provided, and. along a portion of the length of the tie coextensive with a second pair of said stepped parts a second interlocking means for the two back panels is provided, said first interlocking means incorporating a receptor established by a fold lengthwise of said first back panel and said first interlocking means also incorporating a complementary male element for entry into said receptor, said male element forming a part of said second back panel, said second interlmking means incorporating a receptor established by a fold lengthwise of said second back panel and said second interlocking means also incorporating a complementary male element for entry into the last-named receptor, the last-named male element forming a partof said first back panel, one of said receptors being established on the back panel which carries the same as the result of a V-fold lengthwise of said panel, the male element complementary 130 the last-named receptor being established on the back panel carrying said male element as the result of a V-fold lengthwise cf said panel, whereby said male element may be hookingly engaged wioh the last-named receptor.

A necktie of the four-in-hancl type, comprising a body portion shaped and folded. so present a face panel, a first back panel folded in from one side of the face panel, a second back panel folded in from the other side of the face panel, each back panel along its free side edge in the region of a broad end of the tie being provided with a plurality of stepped parts, each stepped part of one back panel being opposite a stepped part of the other panel laterally of the tie whereby there are stepped parts in pairs across the width of the tie, said stepped parts being so proportioned and arranged and said back panels being so additionally relatively folded lengthwise of the tie that along a portion of the length of the tie coextensive With a first pair of said stepped parts a first interlocking means for the two back panels is provided, and along a portion of the length of the tie coextensive With a second pair of said stepped parts a second interlocking means for the two back panels is provided, said first interlocking means incorporating a receptor established by a fold lengthwise of said first back panel and said first interlocking means also incorporating a complementary male element for entry into said receptor, said male element forming a part of said second back panel, said second interlocking means incorporating a receptor established by a fold lengthwise of said second back panel and said second interlocking means also incorporating a complementary male element for entry into the last-named receptor, the last-named male element forming a part of said first back panel, there being auxiliary means for quick detachable coupling of the receptor and the male element of an interlocking means.
8. A necktie of the four-in-hand type, com
prising a body portion shaped for folding to present a face panel and a pair of side panels lying in back of said face panel so as 170 constitute back panels, said body portion between a part thereof become the neckband of the tie and a broadened end of the tie, and along the free side edges of said side panels having stepped parts said stepped parts in pairs laterally of Ehe nie, one of said side panels having a stepped part opposite an unstepped part of the other side panel.

A necktie of the four-in-hand. type, comprising a body portion shaped for folding to present a face panel and a pair of side panels 1ying in back of said face panel so as 130 constitute back panels, said body portion between a part thereof to become the neckband of the tie and a broaclene'zd end of the tieand along the free side edges cf said side panels having stepped parts, said stepped parts in pairs laterally of the tie, one of said. side panels having a stepped part opposite an unstepped part of the other side panel, and said stepped parts being so placed that when one cf said body porti0ns is laid alongside another, with the latter upside down relative to the former, steppecl parts on one of said. body portions match stepped parts on the other of said body portions.

A necktie having a main section and a minor section cut from a single piece of sheet fabric from approximately parallel and adjacent portions cf the fabric, the minor section having a diagonal end edge and the main Section having a mating diagonal end edge, said diagonal and edges being joined to each other to secure the minor section in approximate axial alignment With the main section, the main section having cuts in its opposite longituinal edges providing bendable edge strips, the main secon having a freut panel and side panels connected there- With, one of said side panels being double and carrying one of said benclable strips and the other side panel carrying a wider strip forming a back panel, the clouble side panels folding inwardly against the rear side of the front panel and said bendable strip carried thereby folding under the folded double side panels, the back panel folding between said bendable strip and said double side panels, and being secured. to said bendable strip.
