11 claims. 21.2304235) My invention relates to refrigerating apparatus, more particularly to the enclosed type of motor-compressor unit forming part of such apparatus.
One object of this invention is to produce an improved motor-compressor unit of the type set forth.
A further object of this invention is to produce an improved motor-compressor unit construction by means of which operational, vertical and horizontal vibrations and vibrations produced by the starting and stopping torque ofthe motor, are effectively absorbed and the noises incidental to such vibrations are considerably reduced.
A still further object of this invention is to produce an improved motor-compressor unit construction by means of which the 'assembly of the `component parts of the unit within, and the removal of said parts from the shell or casing enclosing the same is facilitated.
These and other objects are effected by my invention as will be apparent from the following description and claims taken in connection with forming a part of this application, in which:
Fig. 1 is a View partly in elevation and partly in section showing a motor-compressor unit embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional View on line II-IIvof Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary vertical sectional View showing details of construction. i
vReferring to the drawings and more particularly to Fig. 1', there is shown a motor-compressor unit comprising a pump or compressor IU and a motor I2. The motor-compressor unit is enclosed in a shell or casing I4 having a lower or body portion I6 and an upper or cover portion I8. The casing portions I 6 and I8 are secured together in fluidtight relation by bolts or the like 2l) engaging suitable anges 22. The motorcompressor unit may be of any desired internal construction and hence is neither shown nor described in detail.
In order to absorb vertical vibration, the motorcompressor unit is supported by a helical compression spring 24 interposed between the bottom of the compressor and the bottom of the casing portion I 6. As shown, the spring 24 is confined between a shoulder 26, formed on the exterior of a socket 28, and a collar or the like 30, formed on or carried by the bottom of the unit, or on a head 32 threaded into or otherwise engaging a recess 34 in the bottom of the unit I0. The head 32 maybe retained in position by a set screw 36.
The head 32 carries a the socket 28 to limit the tilting of the compresjarring as in transportation or handling.
While I have shown and described a specific form of assembly of the spring 24, it is obvious that other means for positioning and confining the supporting spring 24 may be employed.
In order to absorb operational, horizontal or lateral vibration and vibration incident to stopping and starting of the motor, the motor I2, or the upper portion of the motor-compressor unit, is connected to the casing portion I6 by horizonpreferably in the form of springs disposed tangentially of a circle concentric with the axis of rotation of the motor shaft, together with means for transmitting horizontal or lateral vibrations of said unit to said springs. As shown in Figs. 1 the preferred form illustrated is provided The plates 46 are carried by the l`6 and upwardly extend intopthe cover portion I8. The lateral or horizontal vibrations of the unit are transmitted to the means of a plate 50 interposed ybetween the motor I2 and the springs 40. As
the lower portion of the plate 50 is provided with an opening 52 through which the bolt 44 passes and with recesses in the opposite faces thereof which or more bolts 54 threadedly engaging the plate and passing through openings' 56 in lugs 58 car- The openings is provided with an inlet 62 through which rerefrigerant gas is cooled and liquefied.
Assembly i The compressor I is lowered into the casing I6 and the pin 32 is caused to lpass through the spring 24 and into the socket 26, as shown in Fig. 1. The motor I2 is then lowered onto the top of the compressor I0, and the flanges 66 of the pump and motor casings are suitably secured together in any well-known manner. springs 40, washers 42, bolt 44 and plate 50 arethen assembled on the plates 46. The plate 5B, with or without one or more shims 80, is then secured to the lug 58 by the bolts 54. Vertical adjustment can be obtained by moving the bolts 54 up or down in the elongated slots 56. The cover portion I8 is then lowered onto the motor casing portion I6 and the flanges 22 are secured together by the bolts 20. It is to be noted that the plates casing portion I6 and that the spring assembly carried thereby is disposed within the coverl portion I8 so that when the cover portion I8 is removed. from the lower portion I6,
ows through The\ 46 extend upwardly from thev compressed c .said second-mentioned means the cushioning` means interconnecting the motor I2 to the upper portion of the casing I6 are entirely'accessible.
Operation g With the motor-compressor unitmounted as above described, the lower spring 24 yieldably supports the entire weight and serves to absorb vertical vibration. The springs 40 absorb lateral or horizontal vibration and are of such strength as to absorb the full torque of the motor without being fully compressed.
If during shipment or handling the compresu sor unit is tilted to such an extent as unduly to distort the spring 24, the pin 38 willcome into contact with the wall of the socket 26 and pro.- vide a rigid stop which will limit the tilting movement of the compressorrelative to the casing.
Likewise, the opening 52 in the lower end of the plate 50, coacts with the bolt 54 to limit vertical and horizontal movement of the compressor transversely of the bolt 44. A
It will thus be seen that I have produced a motor-compressor unit construction in which verticaland horizontal vibrations and the starting and stopping torque of the motor are effectivelycushioned or absorbed, thus reducing operational noises and preventing the motor-compressor unit I0 from hitting against the interior of the relatively closely fitting casing. In addition, a motor-compressor unit constructed according to my invention is easily assembled in, or removed from the casing with minimum skill and labor.
While I have shown my invention in but one- 4 A l within said casing, resilient means intermediate the bottom of said unit andthe bottom of said casing for yieldably supporting said unit and cushioning vertical vibration thereof, and cushioning means compressible tangentially of a circle concentric with the axis of rotation of the motor of said unit and resiliently connecting the upper portion of said unit to an upper portion of said casing for cushioning operational lateral vibration of said unit and the starting and stopping torque of theI motor of said unit.
