D 75 1948. w. l. NlssEN CIGR LIGHTER CONSTRUCTION Filed Dec. 5, 1947 INVENTOR. WARREN I. NlssnsN BVM ewf M TTORNEKS.
Patented Dec. 7, 1948 CIGAR LIGHTER CONSTRUCTION Warren I. Nissen, Newark, N. J., assignor to Ronson Art Metal Works, Inc., Newark, N. J., a corporation of New Jersey Application December 5, 1947, serial No. 789,892
4 Claims.
The invention relates to a cigar lighter con struction which is particularly useful in lighters combined with pencils, pens or the like, wherein it is desired tov combine the lighter actuating mechanism with a clip for detachably holding the article in the users pocket. Further objects and advantages of the invention will be in part obvious and in part specifically referred to in the description hereinafter contained which. taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, shows a preferred form of lighter construction operating in accordance with the invention.
In the drawings- Fig. 1 ls a side view partly in section, showing the lighter mechanism in operative positionon the upper end of a cylindrical shell or barrel such as is used in pens or reflllable pencils.
Fig, 2 is a detail section on line 2--2 of Fig. l.
A cylindrical fuel casing l for containing the lighter iluid, is shown as seating telescopically into the upper end of a cylindrical shell 2 which latter may serve as the body of a pen or pencil. A wick tube .'i extends upwardly from the top wall of the casing i, and a snufer member 4 seats against the Wick tube 3, the snuier being pvotally mounted about a stud 5 which is supported between ears '6 which extend upwardly from the top wall of a fuel casing i. Appropriate spark producing mechanism may be understood as housed within the snuifer t, in such manner that a flame is produced when the snuffer swings to open position and is extinguished when the snuier moves from open to closed poy sition, but these spark producing elements are not illustrated nor described in detail since they may be assumed to be of known construction and mode of operation.
A fingerpiece "I is shown as pivotally connected at its upper endV portion to the snuffer I, by means of a pin 8. The iingerpiece 'i lies along the shell 2, and overlies a spring clip member 9 which latter in the illustrated form of theV invention is secured at its upper end portion to the fuel casing l. The fingerpiece is also slidably engaged with the clip 9, inturned tongues I0 belng shown in Fig. 2 as provided on the fingerpiece for this purpose. A restoring spring Il is also shown as housed within the iingerpiece, the spring being connected at its lower end to a hook l2 on the inside of the flngerpiece, and connected at its upper end to a lug I3 struck out from clip 9. Thus the tension of .spring Il normally holds the fingerpiece 1 in its upper position shown in Fig. 1, in which position the snuer 4 is seated against the wick tube 3. The nngerpiece is shown as provided with a shoulder I4 for ready engagement by the operators linger or thumb to depress the fingerpiece, during which movement the flngerpiece will slide downwardly along the clip 8, and snuffer I will be swung to open p0- sition simultaneously with the production of a flame as above described. Upon release of finger pressure, the tension of spring I l restores the parts to the position shown in Fig. 1 to extinguish the flame, the flngerpiece sliding upwardly along clip 9 during this movement. In the illustrated construction, the operating parts of the lighter mechanism including the clip 9 and the lingerpiece 1, are removable as a unit with the fuel casing I. from their operating position on the end of shell 2.
While the invention has been disclosed as carried out by the particular construction which is above described it should be understood that changes may be made without departing from the invention in its broader aspects, within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A cigar lighter construction including a casing. an attachment clip secured Vto said casing and extending downwardly along the side thereof, lighting mechanism including a snuffer member movably mounted on the casing, a fingerpiece connected .indriving relation to said lighting mechanism and extending downwardly to overlie said attachment clip, said iingerpiece -being movably engaged with said attachment clip and being movable between an upper position in which said snuier member is closed and a lower position in .which said snuier member is open.
2. A cigar lighter construction including a casing, an attachment clip secured to lsaid casing and extending downwardly along the side thereof, lighting mechanism including a snuifer member movablymounted on the casing, a ngerpiece connected in driving relation to said lighting mechanism and extending downwardly to overlie said attachment clip, said ngerpiece being movably engaged with said attachment clip and being movable between an upper position in which l said snuifer member is closed` and a lower position in which said snuffer member is open, and a restoring spring disposed on `the inner side of said iingerpiece, said spring yieldingly urging said fingerpiece toward its upper position wherein said snuier is closed. Y
3. A cigar lighter construction including a casing, an attachment clip secured tosaid casing and extending downwardly along the side thereof, lighting mechanism including a snuner 'member movably mounted on the casing, a ngerplece pivotaily connected to said snuner at its upper end portion, and extending downwardly to overlie said attachment clip, said ngerpiece enclosing and being slidably engaged with said attachment clip, and a restoring spring for said ngerpiece, which is interposed between the tlngerpiece and the clip.
4. A cigar lighter construction including a supporting shell, a fuel casing detachably mounted in one end of the shell, an attachment clip secured to said fuel casing and overlying the surface of said shell. a snuier member movably mounted on said fuel casing. a vertically reciprocable nger piece connected to said snuiler member to open and close the latter. said nngerpiece projecting downwardly along said shell and over- 4 lying said attachment clip and being slidably engaged therewith.
