Description
Nov. 16, 1948. v D. J. BROUGHTON I FLEXIBLE POCKET RECEPTACLE Filed Aug. 1, 1946 IINVENTOR Dal/cu: J'Bnauaaroy BY LM ATTORNEYS Patented Nov. 16, 1948 FLEXIBLE, POCKET RECEPTACLE Douglas J. Broughton, Springfield, Mass., assignor to Buxton, Incorporated, Springfield, Mass, a corporation of Massachusetts Application August 1, 1946, Serial No. 687,757
1 Claim.
This: invention relates toan' improved billfold construction and more particularly to an improvement in the card and pass case capacity of the billfold.
One usual form of billtold construction includes a rear wall which extends the full length of the billfold and a front wall made up of two spaced end panels with an intermediate member which bridges the gap between the end panels, the ends of the intermediate member extending beneath the panels. In this manner two pockets are provided between the panels and the intermediate member, these pockets opening endwise toward the transverse fold line about which the end sections of the vbillfold are folded one on the other. It is also customary to provide smaller auxiliary pockets on the outer face of the panels. Cards, folded papers and pass cases are customarily carried in these pockets.
The principal object of the present invention is to make the contents of these pocketsmore readily accessible and at the same time afford better protection to the contents of the pocket.
Other and further objects residing in the details of construction will be made apparent from the following specification and drawings.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate one embodiment of the invention,
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of a billfold constructed in accordance with the invention, the carrier being retracted and closed;
Fig. 2 is a detail View of the carrier removed from the billfold;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view similar to Fig. l but showing the carrier open and in outward position;
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 but showing the carrier open and retracted.
Referring to the drawings, Fig. 1 shows a billfold formed with the usual rear wall l0, spaced front wall end panel members II and I2, and an intermediate front wall member l3, the latter bridging the space between the panel members and having its end portions inserted beneath the panel members. The panel members are integrally connected along their lower edges to the lower edge of the rear wall '0. Flaps extending from the upper edge of the panel members, as indicated in dotted lines at M, are folded downwardly behind the intermediate wall member 13. Flaps l5 and I6, extending from the ends of the rear wall member it] are folded onto the adjacent end panel and connected thereto to close the ends of the bill compartment.
While, if desired, both end sections of the billfold may be constructed in accordance with the present invention, in the billfold shown in Fig. 1 only the left hand end is so constructed and therefore only the left hand end will be described in detail.
The free end of flap I5 is formed with a short extension I'I which is inserted in a slit 18' formed in the panel II. The extension I 1 is formed with tabs [9' which extend, one from each side, heneath the panel ll beyond the ends of slit I 8, as shown in dotted line in Fig. 1 to secure flap I 5 to the panel. A second slit 20 is formed in panel ll spaced from slit It. An apron 2! formed of thin leather, stiff fabric or paper, is
: cemented or otherwise secured to the under side of the panel I! as indicated at 8. Apron 2| is of a width substantially equal to the length of slit 20 and extends from a point adjacent the end of the billfold, beneath the extension H, to the adjacent edge of the slit 2!).
A carrier generally indicated at 9 is positioned in the pocket 22 formed between panel H and the intermediate wall member I 3. The carrier comprises a rear wall member 23, a closure flap 2-4 and a front wall member 25 which are preferably formed from a single piece of leather. Member 25 is adapted to be folded over on member 23 along the fold line 26 and a partition member 21 is stitched to the members 23 and 25 along fold line 26 as indicated at .28. A marginal portion 29 of member 27 extends onto the front wall member 25 and is cemented thereto. A lining sheet 30, preferably of soft leather or fabric, may be cemented to partition members 21 and 25 to cover the stitches 28 and portion 29. The front wall member 25, when folded over onto member 23 positions the partition between them, with the partition hinged at their line of fold.
The free end portion 3| of the front wall 25 of the carrier member is reduced in width forming shoulders 32. The width of portion 3| is made substantially equal to the length of slit 2!) and after the folded carrier has been fully inserted in pocket 22 the free end of member 25 is drawn outwardly through slit 20 as shown in Fig. 4. With the parts so positioned three compartments are formed, one between the rear wall 23 of the carrier and the partition 21, as indicated at 33, a second between the partition 21 and the portion 34 of the panel, as indicated at 35, and a third between the front wall portion 3| and the portion 34 of the panel, as indicated at 36.
As shown in Fig. 3 the carrier may be drawn outwardly until shoulders 32 engage the ends of slit 20, this partial withdrawal of the carrier facilitating the selection and removal of cards, pass cases, papers or other articles from the compartments 33, 35 and 36.
An additional, fixed pocket 31 is provided between the apron 2| and the front wall member 253l.
When the carrier is fully seated in pocket 22 the closure flap' 24 may be inserted between the member 3i and the contents of compartment 36 to enclose the contents of the three compartments of the carrier as shown in Fig. 1.
I claim: 1
In a billfold having front and rear walls connected along their bottom and end edges to form a bill compartment, the end portions of the billfold being foldable one on the other about a transverse line of fold, the front Wall including an end panel and an intermediate wall member forming a pocket, a carrier element slidably mounted in said pocket, said carrier element comprising a rear wall member having length and width dimensions substantially conforming to the interior dimensions of the pocket and a front wall member connected to the end of said rear Wall member Within the pocket, the portion of said front wall member adjacent its connected end being of the same width as the rear Wall member, the free end portion of the front wall member being reduced in width to form shoulders at opposite points on the, sides of the front wall member, a slit formed in the panel through which the reduced portion of the front wall member extends outwardly, the ends of the slit being engageable by said shoulders to limit the outward movement of the carrier element relative to the pool:- et, and a closure member extending from the free end of the rear wall member of the carrier element, said closure member having a width substantially equal to the width of the panel, the free end of the closure member being reduced in width and insertable in said slit when the carrier element is fully seated in the pocket to close the compartments formed between the wall members of the carrier element and the panel.
