FUSE
Filed Dec. 15, 1939 Patented Nov. 2, 1948 FUSE- Cecil C. Fawcett, Philadelphia, and John J. Hart, Bryn Mawr, Pa., assignors to the United States of America as represented by the Secretary of War Application December 15, 1939', Serial No. 309,417
(Granted under the act of March 3, 1883, as amended April 30, 1928; 370 O. G. 757) 2 Claims.
The invention described herein may be manufactured and used by or for the Government for governmental purposes without the payment to us of any royalty thereon.
This invention relates to a fuse.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a structure in which a base plug for a mechanical time fuse may conveniently carry a compressed pellet of black powder or other relay charge in its front face and in which ame communication to a central ash passage is provided by means of a disk interposed between the base plug and the fuse body.
The specific nature of the invention as well as other objects and advantages thereof will clearly appear from a description of a preferred embodiment as shown in the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through a portion of a fuse;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference there is shown a portion of a mechanical time fuse comprising a body 5 carrying a clockwork mechanism indicated generally by its frame 6 and including a firing pin 'I and a primer 8. A ash passage 9 leads from the primer to a cavity ID in the rear end of the body.
A base plug II tting in the cavity I and secured to the body by the threaded engagement I2 is formed with an annular groove I3 in the marginal portion of its front face. Black powder compressed in the groove forms a ring pellet I4 which is radially spaced from the aXis of the fuse by the same amount as the primer 8 and flash passage 9.
A shallow recess I5 formed centrally in the front face of thebase plug and spaced from the groove I3 is in communication with a reduced passage IB and includes an annular shoulder I1.
The passage I6 is preferably tapered and may be closed at the rear face of the base plug by a thin disc I8 which is readily perforated by the name from the pellet I4. In the fuse for which the present improvement is made the passage I6 has an extremely wide mouth to extend beyond the flash passage 9 and it receives a bag of loose powder.
Y 2 2I conveniently formed by marginal indents which are of suicient radial dimension to extend inwardly from the inner edge of the shoulder I'I.
In operation the flame from the primer 8 ignites the black powder pellet I4 and the ame from the pellet is free to pass to the openings ZI by virtue of the spacing between the marginal front face of the plug and the face 20 of the fuse body. The flame after passing through the openings 2I is directed through the passage I6 to a booster charge not shown.
We claim:
1. In a fuse, a body having a cavity, a base plug in the cavity of the body, said plug having a recess in its front facev and a communicating ash passage reduced to provide a shoulder, a disk tting in the recess and seated on the shoulder of the plug, said disk having a thickness in excess of the depth of the recess to space the marginal face of the plug from the fuse body, said disk formed with marginal openings establishing communication between the recess and passage in the plug, and an annular powder pellet carried in the marginal face of the plug.
2. In a fuse, a body having a cavity, a base plug in the cavity of the body and having a central passage, an annular powder pellet carried in the marginal face of the plug and radially spaced from the central passage, a disk interposed between the plug and body above the central passage of the plug and spacing the marginal face of the plug from the body, and openings in the disk establishing name communication between the central passage and the powder pellet in the marginal face of the plug.
