PATENT OFFICE.
WlNDOW-FRAM E. 1
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 24 5,156, dated August 2, 1881.
Application filed May 5, 1881.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, WJLLIAM GoFoR'rH and A. J. GOFORTH, of Windsor, in the county of Henry, and in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Frames; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in window-frames; and it consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as more fully hereinafter set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure-1 shows a vertical sectional view, showing the sash-frame up or in normal position. Fig. 2 represents a horizontal sectional view. Fig. 3 represents a detached sectional view of a portion of the sashframe; Fig. 4, a modification thereof; and Fig. 5, a vertical sectional view of the windowframe as adapted to car-windows, showing the lower part of the sash-frame down.
The letter A indicates the jamhs of the frame, 13 the sill, and O the soffit. The
jambs and soflit are of the ordinary construc- 7 tion but the sill is inclined downwardly and outwardly, in order to shed rain and dust;
The letter D indicates the sash-frame proper, which'is constructed in two sections and confined between the jambs and soffit, setting closely against them. The upper section of the said sash-frame extends from the softit to the meeting line of the sashes, and is fastened securely t0 the jamb and sofit in ordinary windows, as indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The lower section of the sash-frame is pivoted at its lower ends to the jamb, and the adjoining ends of the sash-sections are beveled, as indicated by the letter E, in such manner that the lower section of the saslrframc maybe swung back or inward, as indicated in Fig. 5 of the drawings. The sash-frame is provided with theusual grooves, F, for the sashes G H. The lower outer portion of the jamb is beveled (No model.)
indicated in Fig. 3, or of'hollow cast metal, as
indicated in Fig. at of the drawings.
In the modification shown in Fig. 5 the up per section of the sash-frame A and the jamb extend above the inner and outer window-frames, so that the sashes may be concealed when elevated. This modification is designed for carwindows, and the lower sash is a. blind-sash, as indicated.
The operation ofour invention is as follows: When it is desired to clean the outer faces of the windows or sashes, or to remove said sashes, both of such sashes are let down into the lower section of the sash-frame, which is thrown back, as shown in Fig. 5, when it is evident that the outer faces of the sashes may be readily reached, or the sashes drawn out of the lower section.
We are aware that a sash-frame adapted to swing backward and permit the sashes to be withdrawn is not new, and therefore we do not claim such, broadly.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is-- 1. In combination, jambs A, sill B, and soffit O, the sash-frame D, constructed in two sections, beveled, as shown at E, the lower section being pivoted at its lower ends to the jambs, whereby it may be swung back for the purpose of cleaning the outsides of the sashes and window-panes, substantially as specified. 2. In combination with the lower sash-frame section and the inner sash, the sash stop and support, arranged substantially as and for the in presence of two witnesses, this 12th day of purposes specified. April, 1881.
3. In combination with the inclined sill and WM. GOFORTH. stop, the janib and pivoted lower sash-section, ANDREW J. GOFORTH.
5 beveled, as indicated by the letters I K, sub -Witnesses:
stantielly as and for the purposes specified. CHAS. l. ALLEN,
In testimony whereof we afiix our signatures, HUGH HAMSBERGER.
