4 Claims. (Cl. 211-86) The present invention relates to improvements in vacuum cleaners of the so-called cylinder type which in operation lies with its longitudinal axis in a horizontal position.

Vacuum cleaners of the above-described type are usually equipped with a large number of inter changeable tools which require frequent selection and change if an efllcient cleaning operation is to be performed in a home, or other establishment. As these tools are bulky, as wel-l as numerous, it is not practical to carry them upon the person while using the vacuum cleaner, nor are they well adapted to be neatly stored away with the vacuum cleaner when not in use.

According to the present invention a removable extension tool holder has been provided which may be mounted upon the cylinder portion of the cleaner on which the operating tools of the cleaner may be supported while the vacuum cleaner is out of use in storage, and at the same time is so designed as an operating part thereof that the tools may accompany the cleaner during the entire course of its operation.

Thus, one of the objects of this invention is to provide a cylinder type vacuum cleaner having an extension upon which the operating tools may be supported with the cleaner in service as well as in storage.

Another object of the invention is to provide an improved tool holder for vacuum cleaners of the type described.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a cylinder type vacuum cleaner having a tool holder removably attached thereto for holding the operating tools with the cleaner in service as well as in storage.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a saddle type tool holder for vacuum cleaners of the type described.

A still further object of the invention is to provide as a new combination a cylindrical type vacuum cleaner having an extension disposed centrally; longitudinally and vertically of its longitudinal axis for supporting the cleaning tools upon opposite sides of the extension, but adjacent a plane through the center of mass of the cleaner whereby the tools may accompany the cleaner in service.

These and other objects and advantages residing in the combination, construction and arrangement of the parts will be more fully appreciated from a consideration of the fol-lowing specification and claims.

Reference character iii generally indicates a vacuum cleaner of the so-called cylinder type which may be equipped with runners II, or other suitable carriage structure for supporting the cleaner as it is drawn over the floor by the operator exerting a pull upon the flexible hose H equipped with a tool receiving nozzle l8 upon one end, and a connection l8 at the opposite end insertable into the vacuum inlet 20 in a well known manner. Horizontally extending ribs 22 are shown provided upon opposite sides of the generally cylindrical portions 24.

The extension tool holder comprises a suitable saddle portion which in the illustrated form of the invention comprises a pair of forked members 26 having resilient arms 28 shaped to straddle the cylindrical portion 24 and formed at 30 to embrace the ribs 22. The arms 28 are shown spaced at 32 to provide clearance for the handle 34.

Vertically disposed and located centrally of and along the longitudinal axis of the cleaner i0 is a mounting board 36, or equivalent structure, to which is connected a number of brackets 38, ll, 42 and 44, a number of resilient clips 46 and 48, as well as hooks 50, 52 and 54. It will be noted that the brackets, clips and hooks are all located directly adjacent the central axis of the members 28 so that the center of mass of the extension tool holder will substantially coincide with the center of mass of the cleaner i l.

As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the hooks 54 will support the electrical extension cord 56 with the cleaner ill in storage while the brackets 44 will support the hose H with the cleaner in in storage. The remaining tools 58, 60, 82, 64, 66, 68 and 10 are all adapted to be connected to the nozle l8, interchangeably, and are repeatedly selected and interchanged with the cleaner ill in service. It will be understood that the tools 58 to HI, inclusive, when not being used, will be supported in the manner indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, with the cleaner I. in service, as well as in storage. By supporting the interchangeable tools directly adjacent the vertical plane through the center of mass of the cleaner II, there is no tendency to cause the cleaner to upset or turn over while in service even though the cleaner II is drawn over the floor 3 I through a pull upon the hose II and without the operator exercising any particular, care.

The extension tool holder is preferably detachably connected to the cleaner ID. This has been conveniently arranged in the illustrated form by having the members 29 formed from resilient material, such as spring metal, and engaging with the ribs 22 to prevent rotation of movement of the extension upon the cylindrical portion II. Obviously, other forms for accomplishing the same results will appear to those skilled in the art.

Having thus described my invention. what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:

1. In combination with a cylindrical type vacuum cleaner having a horizontally extending casing, of an extension tool holder supported upon said casing having a vertically disposed tool supporting member extending longitudinally of said casing and disposed in a plane extending substantially through the center of mass of said casing.

2. In combination with a cylindrical type vacuumcleaner'having a horizontally disposed casing, a tool holder comprising a saddle supported upon said casing and carrying a tool supporting member disposed longitudinally of said casing in a vertical plane extending substantially through the center of mass of said casing.

Number 3, In combination with a cylindrical type vacuumcleaner having a horizontally disposed casing. a saddle comprising a pair of forked members engaging with said casing and spaced at points longitudinally thereof, said saddle carrying a vertically disposed tool supporting member, said member extending longitu ally of said casing and being disposed substant y in a vertical plane through the center of mass of said casing.

4. A tool holder for cleaners having a horizontally disposed casing comprising a vertically disposed member having tool supporting means attached thereto on opposite sides, and an attachment saddle means in the form of a pair of forked members longitudinally spaced and adapted to engage over the casing of the cleaner.
