The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in means for easily and quickly attaching a flashlight to the barrel of a firearm whereby to assist in locating a target and using the beam of light from the flashlight as a sighting means for the firearm.
An important object of the invention is to provide flashlight attaching means of this character including means for focusing the beam of light from the ashlight on the target at which the Iirearm is aimed.
Another object of the invention is to provide clamping means for engaging the barrel of a rearm as well as clamping means for engaging the casing of a iiashlight and by means of which the flashlight and the attachment may be mounted on and removed from the barrel of the firearm as a unit, and in which the flashlight may be independently removed from the attachment while the attachment remains in position on the rearm.
A further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is eilicient and reliable in use, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational View;
Figure 2 is a top plan view, and
Figures 3 and 4 are transverse sectional views taken respectively on the lines 3--3 and 4--4 of Figure l.
Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention the numeral 5 designates the flashlight attachment generally and which includes an upper .semicylindrical channel member 6 and a lower semicylindrical channel member 1. Each of the channel members 6 and 'I are constructed of a pair of longitudinally split sections formed with flanges 8 positioned in confronting relation and secured to each other by rivets or bolts 9.
The front ends of the flanges 8 of the upper and lower channel members are pivotally connected to each other by means of a pin I0 to provide for a vertical movement of the rear end of the upper channel member 6 towards or away from the lower channel member 1.
The flanges 8 project rearwardly of their respective channel members and are connected to each other at their rear ends by an adjusting screw II by means of which the front end of the upper channel member 6 may be tilted upwardly or downwardly.
A pair of spaced parallel guide iingers I2 project upwardly from the rear end of the flanges of the lower channel member l and between which the rearwardly projecting ends of the iianges of the upper channel member are received to maintain the channel members in vertical alignment with each other.
The lower channel member 'I is arranged ln inverted position and adapted to seat on the top of the barrel I3 of a rearm and is secured in position thereon by means of a resilient clamp I4 including a spring catch I5. A clamping screw Iii is threaded through the resilient clamp I4 and is provided at its upper end with a clamping head I'I adapted to engage the barrel I3 to clamp the channel member 1 in position thereon. A similar resilient clamping member I8 is piv otally attached to one end of the upper channel member G for embracing a flashlight I9 seated in the upper channel member 6, the upper clamping member also including a spring catch I9 and a clamping screw 2B threaded through the top of the clamping member I8 for clamping engagement with the ilashlight.
By clamping the lower channel member 'I in position on the barrel I3 and clamping a flashlight I 9 in the upper channel member 6 in the manner as illustrated in Figure I of the drawings the flashlight will direct a beam of light in the direction in which the gun is pointed or aimed, the ilashlight thus illuminating the target and also enabling the gun to be generally aimed at the target without requiring a close sight thereon by the usual sights of the rearm.
The front end of the flashlight may be raised or lowered by the adjusting screw I I whereby to coordinate the beam of light with an approximate aim of the firearm.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully compre- Means for supporting a iiashlight on the barrel Y of a firearm comprising a pair of channel members arranged parallel back to back in opposed relation, one member for straddling the barrel and the other for straddling a flashlight, said members having a pair of longitudinal central anges extending along the backs thereof in a common plane with said members and in spaced apart relation with rear ends extending beyond rear ends of said members, said flanges being pivoted together at front ends thereof for tilting of one member relative to the other, an adjusting screw connecting the rear ends of the flanges for tilting said one.member, a pair of guides on the rear end of one flange straddling the rear end of the other flange forwardly of said screw and to guide said one member in tilting movement thereof, and clamps for securing said members to said barrel and flashlight respectively.
