f E. HUBBRD. i MACHINE PoR THEMANUFAGTURE 0F PAPER PAILS. w, No. 244,607. Patented =-J11 1y 19,1881.

UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE. I
EBER HUBBARD,l OF ST. JOSEPH, MICHIGAN.
MACHINE FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF PAPER PAILS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,607, dated July 19, 1881. 1 Application filed August 3o, iseo. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern B e it known that I, EBEE HUBBARD, of St. Joseph, Berrien county, Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Machines for Making Paper Pails, of which the followingis a specification.
`The nature of this invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction of machines for the manufacture of paper pails, and the invention consists in the peculiar construction of the devices employed for forming the croze to receive Vthe bottom, and is particularly designed as an improvement upon the invention for which Letters Patent of the United States Were granted to me April 20, 1880, and numbered 226,752.
Figure l is a central vertical section. Fig. 2 is atop plan. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan. Fig. 4 is a plan view of one ofthe segmental plates detached.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, G represents the press or mold, consisting of a perforated sheetmetal cone provided' with the top spider, f, which is cent-rally perforated to admit of the insertion of the rod D, the full construction of this portion of the invention being contained in the before-mentioned Letters Patent.
In the arms of the spiderf, and in the under face thereof, is formed a recess, a, to receive the annular ring A, which is provided with a stud, b, which projects up between the 4arms of the spidenandby which the ring may be turned, as desired.
B represents segmental plates7 the inner ends of which are slotted, as shown at n, and through which slots pass screws c into the spider. N ear the outer edges of these plates thereis formed aslot, d, which receives a downwardly-projecting stud, e, from the spider, and
which serves as guides to the plates as they are advanced or retracted. V A pin or screw, g, projects from the inner face of each segmental v plate into the eccentric slots h in the ring A, the Whole being so arranged that as the ring is turned in one direction the plates B will be projected a proper distance beyond the face of the cone G, forming an annular ange, which, when the pulp is being pressed to shape, will form a croze in the same for the reception f the head. The plates being retracted, the pail may be readily Withdrawn from the mold or cone.
' I am aWa-rethatan inner perforated conical former made in vertical sections, each of which is provided with a narrow transverse rib, and capable of 'being expanded and contracted Within an outer perforated former, so as to produce a paper-pulp pail with a croze, has heretofore been employed; that an inner conical former has heretofore been employed with a detachable flaring former of less diameter placed thereon to form a shoulder at their junction,'near the small end of the pail, to support its bottom; that shoulders haveheretoforebeen formed onpaper-pulp barrels and pails to su pport'the heads of the former and the bottom of the latter; and that a projectible and retractible ange moving independently of a former has heretofore been used for forming a 7o croze in a pail, and therefore l lay no claim to either of these constructions, my invention being limitedV to the construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter claimed.
What I claim as my invention is The combination, with the former G and spiderf, provided with the'recess a, of the ring A, having the eccentric slots h, slotted segmental plates B, pins d, and screwsc g, substantially as described, and for the purpose 8o set forth.
EBER HUBBARD.
