When the clutch member 43 is moved downwardly into engagement with the clutch member 42, the rotary motion of the wheel spindle I will be transmitted to rotate the shaft 44. to rotate the collar 41 and through the groove 46 and the lug 45 to transmit a rotary motion to the eccentric 39. The rotary motion of the eccentric 39 will transmit a reciprocating motion to the connecting rod 31 and thereby to impart an oscillating movement to the yoked .member 3| to reciprocate the wheel spindle I5 axially within its bearings. The mechanism above described will serve to transmit a continuous reciprocatory movement to the grinding wheel spindle I5 for a plunge-cut grinding operation.
It is desirable in a shoulder grinding operation to provide a manual adjustment for the wheel spindle I5 so that it may be manually moved axially within its bearings to position the side faces of the grinding wheel I4 in the desired relationship with a shoulder or shoulders on a work piece. A manually operable hand wheel v50l is fixedly mounted on the upper end of a shaftk bevel gear 55 is keyed to a sleeve 51. The lower end of the sleeve 51 is provided with a clutch member 58 which is arranged to engage a clutch member 59. The clutch member 59 is flxedly mounted ona rotatable sleeve 60. The lower end of the sleeve 69 is provided with an integral eccentric 6 I. `The eccentric 6I is arranged to mate with an eccentric aperture 62 (Fi-g. 5) formed within the eccentric 39. When it is desired to manually position thegrinding wheel I 4 for a shoulder grinding operation, the clutch member 58 is engaged with the clutch member 59. In this position of the clutch parts, a rotary motion oi the hand wheel 50 will be transmittedthrough the bevel gears 55 and 55 to rotate the sleeve 51, the clutch member 58, the clutch member 59 to transmit a rotary motion to the sleeve 69 and the eccentric 8| which will impart a longitudinal movement to the connecting rod 31 and thereby to swing the yoked member 3 I'precisely to adjust the wheel spindle I5 in an axial direction to position the grinding wheel I4 as desired.
' It is desirable to provide means whereby the length of the reciprocatory stroke of the wheel spindle I5 may be readily adjusted when desired. An adjusting mechanism is provided whereby the eccentric 6I may be adjusted and locked relative to the eccentric 39 so that the effective throw of the eccentrics may be adjusted. As illustrated in Fig. 5 the eccentrics are set for a maximum reciprocatory stroke. By adjusting the eccentric l 6I relative to the eccentric 39, 'the axis of the eccentric 39 may beadjusted toward or from the axis of the shaft 44. If the eccentric 8i is turned through 180, the axis of the eccentric 39 will coincide with the axis of the shaft 44 and when rotated will transmit no reciprocatory motion to the wheel spindle.
To facilitate the above mentioned adjustment, a flange or collar 63 Ais flxedly mounted on the upper end of the sleeve 6I). An adjusting knob 64 is slidably keyed on the upper end of the shaft 44. Theknob 64 is provided with an index pin 65 which'is arranged to engage one of a plurality of index holes 66 formed in the upper surface of the collar 53. A compression spring 61 serves with one of the index holes 56. When it is desired to adjust the reciprocatory stroke, -the knob 64 is raised manually to disengage the index pin 65 from index hole 56 and the knob 64 is then rotated to turn the shaft 44 and thus transmit a rotary motion through the collar 41 and the lug 45 to rotarily adjust the eccentric 39 relative to the eccentric 5I. After the desired adjustment has been made the-knob 64 is released and the compression spring 61 again moves thev knob 64 downwardly so that the index pin 55 engages one of the index holes 66 in the collar 63 to lock the two eccentrics in adjusted position.
In order to facilitate precise adjustment of the eccentrics so as to'obtaln the desired reciprocatory stroke, the collar 63 is provided with a graduated scale 68 and the knob 64 is provided with a zero or index pointer whereby the mechanism may be Iadjusted to obtain a predetermined reciprocatory stroke of the spindle I5.
In order to facilitate readily adjusting the mechanism so that thewheel spindle I5 may be locked against endwise movement, or arranged for a manual 'adjustment for a shoulder grinding operation, or arranged for a reciprocatory stroke for a plunge-cut grinding operation, a suitable mechanism is provided for controlling the clutches above described. 'I'his mechanism may comprise a pivotally mounted clutch actuating lever 10 which is pivotally supported by a stud 1I which is fixed relative to the housing 54. The right-hand end of the lever 10 (Figs. 2- and 3) is formed as a yoke shaped member having a pair of inwardly projecting diametrically opposed studs -12 and 13 which ride in a groove 14 formed in ya spool shaped member 15 which is keyed to rotate with the sleeve 56. The left-hand end of the lever 10 is provided with a latch pin 16 which is normally held in engagement with a plurality of locatingholes 11, 18 or 19 formed in the housing 54. A compression spring BIJ normally holds the latch pin 16 in engagement with one of the holes 11, 18 or 19. A manually operable knob 8| is provided for manually withdrawing the latch pin 15 against the compression of the springll when it is desired to adjust the position of the lever 10. In the position of the parts as illustrated in Fig. 2, the latch pin 15 is in engagement with the hole 19 so that the sleeve 60 and the shaft 44 are in an upward position with the clutch member 59 in engagement with the clutch member 58. Engagement of the clutch members 59-58 renders the manually operable adjusting mechanism operative so that the wheel spindle may be adjusted axially by means ofthe hand wheel 50 operative for a shoulder grinding operation.
If it is desired to lock the spindle against endwise movement, the lever 10 is swung to an intermediate position with the latch pin 18 en- 5 gaging the index hole 18 in which position both of the clutches 42-48 and 58-58 are disengaged.
If it is desired to set the mechanism up for a reciprocatory movement of the wheel spindle forl a plunge-cut grinding operation, the control lever 10 is locked into a position so that the latch pin 'I8 engages index hole `This movement causes a downward movement ci the shaft 44 and the ,sleeve 80 so that the clutch member 43 is moved into engagement 'with clutch member 42. In this position ofthe parts rotation of the wheel spindle I will be Atransmitted through the mechanism above described to produce a continuous reciprocation of the wheel spindle I5 within its bearings I8 and I1 for a plunge-cut grinding operation, the extent of the reciprocatory movement of the spindle |5 being governed by the relative positions of the eccentrics 39 and 8 I.
When it is desired to hold the spindle I5 against axial movement, it is desirable to provide a positive locking device whereby the spindle I5 may be locked with a solid end thrust so thatit is held positively against endwise movement during a grinding operation. The yoked member 3| (Figs.
2 and 4) is provided with an upwardly extending stud 85 which is formed at its upper end with a truste-conical end portion 88. A cylindricaliyshaped housing 81 is mounted on the upper end of the housing 54 and contains a cylindrical aperture 88 which supports a slidably mounted hollow sleeve 89. The lower end of the sleeve 89 is provided with a truste-conically shaped aperture 90 which' in a downward position' mates with the irusto-conical portion 88 of the stud 85. When the sleeve 89 is in a downward position with the Truste-conical aperture 80 engaging a frusto-conical portion 88 of the stud 85. the yoked arm 3| the stud |00 is withdrawn to this position, the f is held against an cillating motion thereby providing a solid end thrust positively to hold the spindle I5 against axial movement. A compression spring 9| is provided within a central aperture 92 in the sleeve 89. The compression spring 9| is interposed between the bottom ofthe aperture 92 and a stud 93 which extends through elongated clearance slots 94 in the sleeve 89 and is ilxed relative to the housing 81. Elongated slots -94 are provided in the sleeve 89 to facilitate moveiii either a continuous reciprocatory movement of the spindle or a manual adjustment thereof.
It is desirable to provide an interlocking mechanism between the positive locking device and the clutch actuating mechanism so as to prevent lengagement of either of the clutches when the spindle is locked against reciprocatory movement. It is similarly desirable to arrange the interlocking mechanism so as to prevent engagement of the locking device when either of the clutches are engaged for power reciprocation or hand adjustment of the wheel spindle. This interlocking mechanism preferably comprises a stud I 00 which is slidably mounted within the housing 81. The end of the stud |00 (Fig. 3) is provided with a `latch pin |0| which in the position illustrated engages a hole |02 formed in the lever' 10, when the lever 10 is lin an intermediate position. The stud |00 is normally held with the'pin |0I in ensagement with the hole |02 by means ot a compression spring I03. When it is desired to reciprocate theispindlel or adjust it manually, the knob 95 is raised to disengage the frusto-conical aperture 90 from the conical surface 88 of the stud 85. When the sleeve 89 reaches its upper-most position, the knob |04 may be moved (Fig. l3) so that the stud |00 slides through the groove |05 in the sleeve 89. During this movementthe latch pin |0| withdraws from engagement with the hole |02 thus unlocking the lever 10 so that it may be shifted to engage eitherof the clutches as desired. When stud |00 engaging the groove |05 serves to lock the sleeve 89 in an uppermost position and there- :by to prevent engagement of the locking device when either of the clutches are engaged for a continuous reciprocation of the spindle I5 duringl a plunge-cut grinding operation or a manual adjustment or traverse is operative for a shoulder grinding operation. It will be readily apparent from the foregoing disclosure that the locking device and the clutch actuating mechanism are interlocked so that the clutches cannot be engaged when the locking device is operative and similarly the locking device cannot be actuated to lock the spindle when either of the clutches are operative.
The operation of this improved wheel spindle positioning and reciprocating mechanism will be readily apparent from the foregoing disclosure. Depending upon the 'grinding operation to `be performed, the wheel spindle I5 is either locked against endwise movement to provide a solid end thrust where any axial movement or adjustment of the spindle I5 is desiredv or the leverA 'I0 may be positioned to facilitate a manual adjustment of the spindle I5 during a shoulder grinding operation, or the lever I0 may be positioned to provide a continuous reciprocatory movement of the wheel spindle I5 within the spindle bearings I8 and during a plunge-cut grinding operation. As above described by actuation of the knob 62, the eccentrics 39 and 8| may be relatively adjusted to vary the length of reciprocatory stroke of the spindle I5, as desired.
It will thus be seen that there has been provided by this invention apparatus in which the various objects hereinabove set forth together y with many thoroughlyv practical advantages are to maintain bothy of said clutches disengaged,y
and a positive locking device positively to lock said spindle against axial movement.
2. In a grinding machine having a transversely movable slide, a rotatable spindle thereon to support a grinding wheel, bearings in said slide to support said spindle for a rotary and axial reciprocating movement', means including a rotatable eccentric to move said spindle axially, means including a clutch to rotate said eccentric continuously so as to reciprocate said spindle axially within its bearings through an adjustable stroke for a plunge-cut grinding operation, manually operable means including a clutch to actuate said eccentric so as to move said spindle axially to position said grinding wheel for a shoulder-grinding operation, a manually operable clutch actuating lever for actuating either one or the other of said clutches which is arranged in a neutral .position to maintain both of said clutches disengaged, and a manually operable positive locking device positively to lock said spindle against axial movement.
3. In a grinding machine having a transversely movable wheel slide, a rotatable spindle to support said grinding wheel, bearings in said slide to support said spindle for a rotary and axial reciprocating movement, 'means including an eccentric to move said spindle axially, means including a clutch to rotate said eccentri-c so as to reciprocate said spindle axially within its bearings through an adjustable stroke for a plungecut grinding operation, means including a clutch to actuate said eccentric manually to move said spindle axially toposition said grinding wheel for a shoulder-grinding operation, means including an actuating lever for actuating either one or the engagement'of either of said clutches when said other of said clutches which is arrangedin a u neutral position to maintain both of said clutches disengaged, a positive locking device positively to lock said spindle against axial movement, and an interlock betwen said clutch actuating lever and said locking device to prevent engagement of eithery of said clutches when said spindle is locked.
4. In a grinding machine having a transversely movable wheel slide, a rotatable spindle to support said grinding wheel, bearings in said slide to support said spindle for a rotary and axial reciprocating movement, means including an eccenvtric mechanism to move said spindle axially,
means including a clutch to rotate said eccentric so as to reciprocate said spindle axially within its bearings through an adjustable stroke for a plunge-cut grinding operation, manually operable means including a clutch to actuate said eccen-l tric manuallyto move said spindle axially to position said grinding wheel for a shoulder-grinding operation, a manually operable clutch actuating lever for actuating either one or the other of said clutches which is arranged in a neutral `position to maintain both of said clutches disengaged, a manually operable positive lockingdevice positively to lock said spindle against axial 'spindle is locked.
5. In a grinding machine having a transversely movable wheel slide, a rotatable spindle thereon to support a grinding wheel, bearings in said slide to support said spindle for a rotary and axial reciprocating movement, means including a rotatable adjustable eccentric mechanism to move said spindle axially, means including a clutch to rotate said eccentric continuously so as to reciprocate said spindle axially within y its bearings through an adjustable stroke for a plunge-cut grinding operation, manually operable means including a clutch to actuate said eccentric mechanism to move said spindle axially to position said grinding wheel for a shoulder grinding operation, a manually operable clutch actuating lever for actuating either one or the other of said clutches which is arranged in a neutral position to maintain both of said clutches disengaged, a. manually operable positive locking device positively to lock said spindle against an axial movement, and an interlock between said clutch actuating lever and said locking device to prevent actuation of said locking device when either of said clutches are engaged.
6. In a grinding machine having a transversely movable wheel slide, a rotatable spindle to support a grinding wheel, bearings in said slide to support said spindle for a rotary and axial reciprocating movement, means including an adiustable eccentric mechanismy to move said spindie axially, means including a clutch to rotate said eccentric continuously to reciprocate said spindle axially within its bearings through an adjustable stroke for a plunge-cut grinding operation, manually operable means including a clutch to actuate said eccentric manually to move said spindle axially to position said grinding wheel for a shoulder grinding operation, a manually operable clutch actuating lever for actuating either one or the other of said clutches which is arranged in a neutral position to maintain both oi' said clutches disengaged, a manually operable positive locking device positively to lock said spindle against axial movement. and an interlock automatically to lock said clutch actuating lever in a neutral position when said spindle is locked against endwise movement.
7. In a grinding machine having a transversely movable Wheel slide, a rotatable spindle on said slide to support a grinding wheel, bearings in said 'slide to support said spindle for a rotary and axial reciprocating movement, means including an adjustable eccentric mechanism to move said spindle axially, means including a clutch to rotate said eccentric continuously to reciprocate said spindle axially within its bearings through an` y adjustable stroke for a plunge-cut grinding operation, manually operable means including a clutch to rotate said eccentric so as to move said spindle axially to position said grinding Wheel fOr 8. In a grinding machine having a transversely movable wheel slide, a rotatable spindle on said slide to support a grinding wheel, bearings in said slide to supportv said spindle for a rotary and axial movement, means including a pivotally mounted yoked member to vmove said spindle axially within its bearings, means including an adyoked member, manually operable means including a clutch to rotate said eccentric precisely to position said spindle and grinding wheel for a shoulder grinding4 operation, power actuated means including a clutch positively' to rotate said eccentric to reciprocate said spindle axially within its bearings during a plunge-cut grinding operation, a manually operable clutch mechanism to actuate said clutches so as 'to render operative either the manually operable means or said power operated means, a manually operable positive locking deviceto lock said yoked member against oscillation, and an interlock to'lock said locking device out o! engagement when either of said clutches are engaged.
9. In a grinding machine having a transversely slide tc support a grinding ljustable eccentric mechanism to oscillate said movable wheel slide, a rotatable spindle on said v shoulder grinding operation, power actuated means including a clutch positively to rotate said eccentric to reciprocate said spindle axially within its bearings during a plunge-cut grinding operation, a manually operable clutch mechanism to actuate said clutches so 'as to render operative either the manually operable means or said power operated means, a manually operable positive lockgo ing device. to lock said yoked member against oscillation, and an interlock to lock said locking device out'of engagement when either of said clutches are engaged.
