To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ETHELBERT S. Garr- FITH, of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Cot-Chairs, of which the following is a specification.

The objects of my invention are to provide a means for folding the chair into a small and compact parcel for convenience in transportation; and a further object is to provide a means of adjusting the back of the chair to any desired angle or inclination and quickly securing the same firmly-in position, and to provide an adjustable, detachable, flexible covering, forming the back and seat thereof, as hereinafter more fully described and set forth.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a folding cot-chair constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same when folded in one direction. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the same when nearly folded together in the opposite direction.

A represents the back frame or standards, their lower portions serving a-s the front legs, B, when the chair is in use. To these standards A B are pivoted the legs 0, which form the rear legs, and are provided at their upper ends with dowels or tenons e, which fit in corresponding holes formed in the removable cross-piece D forming the front of the seat, and to which is permanently secured the flexible canvas bottom and back W at one end, and the opposite or top end to the cross-piece D, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1, this crosspiece D being also detachable from the upper ends of said back standards A, which are provided with dowels or tenons O, which fit corresponding holes provided in the said crosspiece D, as shown, thus permitting the removal of said cross-pieces D D and flexible covering W when desired to fold the chair, as shown. Now, in order to permit the said back to be adjusted and secured at any angle of inclination desired, I provide adjustable supports E, which are pivoted at their lower ends at or near the lower ends of the said pivoted cross-legs O, and their upper ends are provided with screw-bolts and thumb-nuts F, said screwbolts passing through said supports E and the them longitudinal slots G formed in the said back frame-standards A, or by means of the strips orcleats H, secured to the rear of, said standards A at their lower ends by a bolt or rivet passing through the same and through the lower ends of the diagonal braces I and the back frame or standards A, the upper ends of the said diagonal braces I being pivoted to the jointed horizontal cross-bars J at points intermediate between the central pivot of said jointed cross-bars J and the back standards A, to which the outer ends of said horizontal cross-bars J are pivoted, as shown.

Now, in order to stay the pivoted cross-legs O, I provide an exact or similar means, consisting of the diagonal braces K, which are pivoted at their lower ends to the said crosslegs 0 near their lower ends, and at their upper ends to the horizontal jointed cross-bar L intermediate between its center pivot or joint and its outer ends, which are pivoted to the said cross-legs 0 near their upper ends, as shown. a

It will be evident that one or both of the said horizontal jointed cross-bars J and L may be pivoted to either the said back standards A or the cross-legs U ator near the points to which the said diagonal braces I or K are connected or pivoted at their lower ends, thereby reversing the same without departing from myinvention, as the same folding results would thereby be accomplished by substantially the same means therefore I have omit-ted to illustrate such modification in the figures shown in the drawings.

It will be understood that in order to fold my said cot-chair the said cross-pieces D and D are to be removed from the dowels c and e, as shown in Fig. 1, which act carries with the flexible covering W, and then the pivoted cross-legs O are folded inwardly or between the back standards AB, as shown in Fig. 2, by loosening the said thumb-screws F, which permit the bolts to slide downward in said slots G; then, by forcing the said horizontal cross-bars J and L upward or off their centers, the said back standards AB and crosslegs 0, with their said diagonal braces I and K, will permit the same to fold into a position nearly parallel therewith, as shown in Fig. 3, wherein it is not fully closed together, but nearly so.

Having thus described my invention, what 5 I claim 18- the jointed braces, all the parts combined and arranged to operate as set forth.
