This invention relates generally to vegetable peelers and more particularly to an abrasive surface for a vegetable peeler.
Vegetable peelers heretofore have had abrasives secured to the inside surfaces of a vegetable peeler by different forms of binders. Poured molten metal has been tried as a binder for flint, quartz emery, and the like but this surface has proved ineffective. Enameled surfaces with abrasives have also been tried but it was found that the abrasive surfaces loosened and became lodged in the vegetables causing injury to the ultimate consumer of the vegetables. Abrasive surfaces heretofore provided have all been such that particles would become dislodged from the abrasive surface and become lodged in the vegetables.
It is, accordingly, an object of my invention to provide a vegetable peeler which overcomes the above and other defects in vegetable peelers and it is more particularly a object of my invention to provide a vegetable peeler which is simple in construction, efficient in operation, and economical in cost.
Another object of my invention is to provide a vegetable peeler which has a novel abrasive surface for removing the skin; from the vegetables.
Another object of my invention is to provide a novel method of applying an abrasive surface in a vegetable peeler.
Another object of my invention is to provide a novel abrasive surface for a vegetable peeler which is economical in cost and economical in application.
Other objects of my invention will become evident from the following detailed description, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which the single figure is a vertical sectional view of my novel vegetable peeler.
Referring to the drawings, the figure shows an open cylindrical member I having a lateral opening 2, a hinged door 3 for covering the opening 2, and an angularly disposed drainboard 4, adjacent to the external portion of the aperture 2. Flanged bushing .5 is disposed in aperture 8 in the bottom portion of the cylindrical member I and has vertically disposed therein a shaft 1 with a collar 8, and an upwardly extending head portion 9 for receiving a dish-shaped disk 10 having apertures ii for drainage. The upper surface ii of the disk [0 and the internal surface I! of the cylindrical member I is first sand blasted to provide a rough surface. A special hard Nichrome stainless steel is then sprayed on the surfaces by means of spray nozzles utilizing oxygen and acetylene to instantly heat and melt a wire of Nichrome stainless steel. A second coat of stainless steel is applied to the base surface of the peeler by spraying. The spraying operation leaves an irregular and rough abrasive surface which peels vegetables faster and better than other abrasive surfaces. It has been found that no emery or like abrasives are required in my novel peeler and none of the metallic coating becomes dislodged from the surfaces l2 and i3. These surfaces stand up indefinitely and the wear thereof is negligible.
It will be evident from the foregoing that I have provideda novel coating for the abrasive portion of a vegetable peeler which is durable,
which efllciently removes the skins from the vegetables, and which greatly decreases the cost of application of the coating.
Various changes may be made in the specific embodiment of the present invention without departing from the spirit thereof, or from the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A vegetable peeler comprising an open cylindrical member, means for agitating the vegetables in said cylindrical member and abrasive surfaces in said cylindrical member and on said agitating means comprising two layers of sprayed stainless steel.
2. A vegetable peeler as set forth in claim 1 wherein the inner layer of sprayed stainless steel comprises Nichrome stainless steel.
