When cutting a head of hair, normally a pair of scissors, a hair clipper, ,anda comb are used to do the job. The comb ;must be .usedwhen either the clipper or the scissors -is used; :there fore,to do the job both hands of the ;hair cutter must-be used-atall times. The comb is normally used to lift the hair to ;a desired length, then the hair ;is :cut over the-comb either .with arpa-ir of shears or a clipper.
It is the main object of this invention to -.combine all of these tools inone .implement' and to produce a device which is .far superior to ,known devices; to provide such a ,device which is so simple that any one .can .-cut :his own head of hair without having developedthe .skillor having the knowledge of hair-cutting; to provide in. such a. device a pair of movableclipper members which maybe reversed at the willof ,theoperator, on a guidebar, therebyzproducing :a tool whichvmay be used efiicientlywith either the left or righthand of the operator. latter with a stop or holding notch 5.2 and a vertically extending bore 5.3. The other end of the guide bar is provided'with a circular offset washer-like base or disc 6 having a relatively large bore 1 therein, an aperture 3 and a countersunk bore 9.
The disc 6 of the guide bar is positioned between the hubs LI and 2.I of the handle members I and 2 respectively and is held therebetween by a bolt 3 which is threaded through the aperture 8,. and a rivet 9.I threaded through the countersunk bore 9 and seated in a suitable bore in the stationary hub 2.I (see Fig. 4).
A movable link arm II! is provided with a guiding collar II adapted to fit freely on arm 5 of the guide bar. The rear end of the link arm I is provided with upstanding bosses or ears IILI and I 3.2, eachhaving anchoring apertures I2 therein. The forward end of link arm I0 is provided with upstanding fingers I3. The link arm I3 is adapted to lie in slot 4 and abut against the inner face of the arm of the guide bar and to be slidable thereon and within the slot 4. The fingers I3 are adapted to straddle the arm 5.
The ears HM and IE2 of the link arm I!) are pivotally secured to the center of hub H of the movable handle member I by rivets I4, or the like, threaded through apertures I2, bore 1 and seated in aperture I4.I of the hub I.I so as to impart reciprocating movement to the link arm ill upon closing or opening of the handle I.
It will be apparent from Figs. 1 and 3 that the bore 1 is adapted to permit the pivoted rivet I4 to move freely forward or backward or in a slight arcuatemovement when the handle I is alternately opened and closed.
Stop or anchoring arm I5, having a medially positioned collar I6, is adapted to fit within slot 1 and abut against the innerface of bar 5.I. The arm I5 is provided with an aperture I1 in the rear end thereof and a downwardly extending finger I8 integrally secured to the other end and extending across the width thereof.
The anchoring arm I5 is secured to arm I5.I in any suitable manner, such as by rivet I9 threaded through aperture I1 and the bore 5.3 in the arm 5.I. The finger I8 seats in slot 5.2 of arm 5.I. Referring to Fig. 1, it will now be apparent that when the handle I is moved downwardly toward the handle 2, the movement will cause the link arm IE] to shift to the left. When the handle is returned to itsnormal position the link arm will move to the right. As the handles are pivoted at a point above the center of the device the action on the center of the handle hubs, where the link arm It] is anchored, will be of a push-pull type which will cause the link arm III to move forwardly and backwardly in a reciprocating movement when the handles are opened or closed.
The handle member I will. automatically open or return to the position shown in full lines Fig. 1 by the action of the compression spring 2| which is secured to and between handle members I and 2 in any suitable manner.
The cutters or toothed members 22 and 23 are similar in design and construction, both having relatively long, slightly tapered teeth 24, so that when placed cutting face to cutting face, thecomposite structure thereof resembles a wide toothed comb. The members 22 and 23 are adapted to fit the other of the guide bar.

The toothed member 22 is provided with finger engaging recesses or seats 21 at both of its ends and bottom slideways or indentations 21.I positioned below the seats 21. The toothed member 23 has the recesses and indentations oppositely arranged, i. e., the seats 21.2 being arranged adjacent the lower ends thereof while the slideways or indentations 21.3 are arranged thereabove. One of the engaging fingers I3 ofth'e link arm II] is seated in the seat 21 of the toothed member 22, while the other finger I3 merely moves freely along the slideway 21.3 of the cutter member 23. The securing finger I8 ofthe stop arm I 5 is fitted into the recess 21.2 of the stationary cutter member 23 and the stop notch 5.2 in the guide arm, thereby preventing movement of the cutter member 23. i
It will now be apparent that but one of the engaging fingers I3, positioned on the front end of the link arm I0, will fit into the engaging recess 21 of the'movable cutter 22 the remaining finger, being positioned on the opposite side of the guide bar arm 5, will at all times merely abut against the slideway 21.3 of the stationary cutter 23. At the same time the finger I8 secured to the forward end of the arm I5 seats itself into the seat or notch 5.2 contained in the guide bar arm 5.I and abut against the slideway 21.I of the cutter member 22 and the engaging notch 21.2 contained in the now stationary cutter member 23. By this arrangement the bottom or stop arm I5 will hold and keep the cutter 23 immovable and will allow the cutter 22 to be moved by the link arm I0 when the handle member is depressed because one of the fingers I3 thereof will be positioned in the engaging recess or seat 21. The nonengaging finger I3 will slide freely in the slideway,
21.3 of the cutter member 23.
Each toothed member 22 and 23 is provided Wit ing the bolt to a suitably aligned and threaded aperture 3| contained in member 23.
The short arm 29.2 of the plate spring 29 seats in the groove 28 and thelong arm thereof bears against the outer face of cutter member 22 adjacent the bottom end thereof only whereby substantially only the upper and lower edge of the plate spring 29 bear against the cutter member 22 leaving the major portion of the inner face of the spring 29 free of contact with the outer face of the cutter member 22, whereby equally applied tension is exerted to assure proper'tensioning of the face of the cutter member 22 against the face of the cutter member 23.- L
It will now be apparent from the drawings and the foregoing description that the cutter members 22 and 23 aretransferable from one side to parent from Figs. Whenitisdesired to reverse the cutter members, the user grasps the collars I! and is between his-thumb. and index finger-and by pressing thetWotogetherthe cutter members are freed from-engagementwith-the linkarms l0 and 15. By this operation, the finger l3 will be released from the seat 21 and the securing finger l8 will be released from the seat 21-.2, thereby allowing the two cutter members to be withdrawn from the guide bar.
When assembled, the teeth 24 of both members 22 and 23 are in mutual alinement with each other; hence take on the appearance of apomb and'thusr-maybe used as such for combing ;the hair. When making a cut, the-hairis first combed downwardly in the direction of the shoulders to straighten the same, then the device is moved in the opposite direction to lift the hair away from the scalp and outwardly to the position desired, so that the user may cut off the amount of hair he wants, by compressing the handle l. While the handle is still closed, the device is withdrawn from the head and the handle allowed to open by releasing the pressure of the fingers and allowing the spring 2| to force the handle outwardly. Now the hair is again combed with the device to straighten the hair and the cutting step is repeated.
It is, therefore, apparent that this device does the work of the usual clipper and comb and it performs the function of all three of these devices and is capable of being manipulated with one hand only.
The long teeth, like a comb, pick up the hair and hold it firmly and perfectly therebetween until the handle is closed to make the out. As the teeth are long and sturdy, they allow the hair that has been previously out by the device to fall through the openings between the teeth so that only the hair which is desired to be cut remains between the teeth for clipping.
It can readily be seen that by placing one of the outer faces of the cutter members flat against the neck or skin of the user, the device functions as a fine clipper.
It will be understood that numerous details of the invention herein shown and described may be altered or omitted without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the following claims.
I claim:
1. A device of the class described comprising a pair of cutter members, one of said members being stationary and the other movable with respect thereto, each having elongated toothed members spaced closely together, a pair of handle members, one of said handle members being stationary and the other movable with respect thereto, offset hubs on the forward ends of each of said handle members, a stationary guide bar having an offset hub on one end thereof positioned between said handle members, and said guide bar extending forwardly of one of said handle members, a pivot bolt for securing said handle members and guide bar together and lying in a plane offset from the main longitudinal axis of said handles and guide bar, a link arm pivotally connected at one end to said movable handle, a spring stop arm rigidly secured at one end to said guide bar, said cutter members being positioned one on each side of the free end of said guide bar, the movable cutter member being opera'tively' -.and. :rmovably :connected to said ilinlc arm: and said stationary .eutter member being removably :secured. to said spring stop arm, and resilientispring. :plaitetmeans:forsecuring said out-- ter membersto said "guide bar. in assembled face to face relationship, whereby whensa'idxmovable handle is manipulated the movable cutter member will reciprocate.

The device according to clain'r-l, wherein each of said toothedmembers isprovided. with a horizontally extending. channel on their inner faces for the :reception; of said iguide;.-bar, and spring means: for. insuring coactive-iengagement of .said link .arm and stop arm: in operative. posi tion to said cutter members;

A device of thecharacterdescribedcomprising a'pair of handle-members, one of said handle members being stationary ;.and.the othermova ableewithrespect thereto and reach provided with an offset hub, a common pivot bolt, the axis of which is above the longitudinal axis of the device as a whole, an elongated guide bar having a pair of horizontally disposed arms extending forwardly from said handles and having an offset hub on its rearward end, said hub on said guide bar being secured between said handle hubs by said pivot bolt, a link arm slidably positioned on one of said guide bar arms and between both of said arms and having its rearward end pivotally secured to the hub of said movable handle, a stop arm secured at one end to the other arm of said guide bar and between both of said arms, a spring positioned between said guide bar arms to normally urge said stop arm and link arm apart, a pair of elongated cutter members having teeth of identical design arranged one on each side of said guide bar, the free end of said link arm being removably secured to one of said cutter members, the other cutter member being removably secured to the free end of said stop arm whereby upon manipulation of said movable handle the cutter member secured to said link arm will reciprocate while the other cutter member will remain stationary in respect thereto, and spring plate means for retaining said cutter member in assembled position on said guide bar in face to face relationship.

A device of the character described comprising a pair of handle members, one being stationary and the other movable with respect thereto and each provided with an offset hub at its forward end; a common pivot bolt the axis of which is above the longitudinal axis of the device as a whole, an elongated guide bar having an offset hub on its rearmost end and having a pair of spaced horizontally disposed arms, one positioned above the other, extending forwardly from said hub, said hub on said guide bar being secured between said handle hubs by said pivot bolt and having the bottom portion thereof integral-1y secured to the lower portion of said stationary handle hub by a rivet at a point diametrically opposite the said common pivot bolt; a link arm having a pair of ears at its rear end, upstanding engaging fingers on its forward end and a guide collar intermediate of its ends, said link arm being slidably positioned On one of said guide bar arms and between both of said arms and having the ears thereof pivotally secured to the hub of said movable handle; a stop arm provided with a downwardly extending finger at its forward end, and a collar intermediate of its ends, said stop arm being secured at its rear end to the other arm of said 7 guide bar and between both' of said guide bar arms; a spring positioned between said guide bar arms to normally urgeisaid stop arm and said link arm apart; a pair of elongated cutter mem bers having teeth of identical design arranged one on each side of said guide bar in face to face relationship and one being movable with respect to the other, said handle members and saidcutter members lying in the same longitudinal plane, said movable cutter member being provided with finger-receiving seats at either end thereof adjacent the base of the said teeth and having slideways at either end thereof below said finger-receiving seats, said stationary cutter provided with oppositely arranged s-lideways and seats, the former being above the latter, the fingers on the free end of said link arm being removably secured within said finger-receivin seats, the finger of said stop arm being removtion on said guide bar in face to face relationship.
