SIZE OR BINDING COMPOSITION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,200, dated July 12, 1881.

To all whom it may concern Be itknown that I, CHRISTOPHER G. DODGE, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Size or Binding Composition, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide painters, paperhangers, and others with a binder or size which is in the form of a dry and portable powder, and which can be at once prepared for use by the addition thereto of a proper quantity of cold water.
In carrying out my invention I take powdered dextrine, borax, and alum, in proportions which may vary to some extent, dependin g upon the conditions under which the size is to be used. I have found that a good size for general purposes can be made with ninetytwo parts dextrine, three parts borax, and five parts alum, and these proportions may be taken as a guide, an increase in the quantity of bo- V rax causing the size to flow more freely and smoothly from the brush, and an increase in the quantity of alum imparting greater hardness to the surface which the size presents on drying, and causing the size to adhere more firmly to the wall or other surface to which it is applied.
The size may be used alone,in place of paste or glue-size, by paper-hangers and others, or it may be mixed with any of the various materials used for finishing or coating walls and ceilings, its use in the latter connection being particularly advantageous, owing to the abovementioned qualities of a smooth surface, firm adherence to the wall, and facility for being immediately prepared for use by the simple addition of cold water.
