May 4, 1948. c. J. PEART SMOKING STAND Filed May 17, 1946 cAarzQ's' J23; 2%
Patented May 4, 1 948 UNITED STATES QF'FICE 2,440,783 I t a SMOKING srnNn Charles J. Peart, Santllrancisco; Calif; Application May 17, 1946, 'SeriaINo; 67113428;
My invention relates to an improved smoking stand for the reception and sanitary retention of ashes and cigarette and cigar butts of the type which includes a liquid container into which the ashes and butts fall, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a smoking stand of this character having novel construction and arrangement of parts, whereby the container is rendered non-spillable, and can be readily removed for emptying and cleaning and replaced.
Other important objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent from a reading of the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein for purposes of illustration only, a preferred embodiment is set forth in detail.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a substantial central vertical section taken through said embodiment. I
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the stand fallen to a tilted position.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the stand.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral 5 generally designates a preferably tapering cylindrical metal or other suitable material container provided with a circular top 6 secured to the wider upper end of the container and overhanging the sides thereof a sufficient distance to act as a prop, as shown in Figure 2, to hold'the container at a level above a certain critical angle with respect to a stand-supporting surface 1 whenever the stand is tipped over accidentally, so as to avoid spilling the liquid contents thereof.
The top 6 is provided with a relatively large concentric opening 8.
A bottle 9 of glass or other suitable material in generally cylindrical form rests upon the bottom Iii of the container 5 and fits therein. The bottle has a threaded neck II on which is secured a closure cap I2 in which is secured a tube i3 which depends into the bottle and rises above the cap, to the point I 4 where it flares into a conical portion I5 which reaches through and conformably fits the opening 8 in the top 6 and is substantially flush therewith.
Seated in the upper end of the conical portion [5 and depending thereinto in concentrically spaced relation to its sides and in axially spaced relation to the tubular portion I3 is the inverted frusto-conical main guard I! having a short depending tubular portion I8.
A secondary guard, which acts to retain the main guard I! in place in the conical portion [5 is provided in the form of an inwardly project- 2 Claims. (01. 131-236) ing flange ill on the upper edge of the conical portion i5, the presence of which prevents the spilling, upon overturning of the stand, of any small amount of ashes and/or butts and liquid which may reside in the guard l1 at the time.
As shown in Figure 2, upon accidental overturning of the stand 5, the liquid 20 within the bottle 9, which seeks a common level in the bottle, the tubular portion I 3, and in the conical portion I5, is retained by the main guard I1 whose central opening I8 is maintained above the liquid level by the engagement of the overhanging top 6 with the floor or other supporting surface 7.
When it is desired to empty and clean the stand 5, the conical portion l5 and the bottle 9 are removed from the container 5 as a unit, together with the container top 6 in the event it is made removable therewith. The cap and the appurtenances can then be readily unscrewed from the bottle 9 and the accumulated contents in the bottle disposed of. Fresh water, preferably containing disinfectant and/or deodorant may then be placed in the bottle and the stand reassembled.
The fiange I9 has on its upper side a decorative and utilitarian annulus 2| having cigar or cigarette-holding notches 22 projecting above the level of the top 6.
I claim:
1. A smoking stand comprising an outer container having a top having a rim extended beyond the sides of the container to support the container at an obtuse angle when overturned upon a supporting surface, said top being formed with an opening, a quenching-fluid bottle seated in a lower part of said container, a closure cap for said bottle, means extending above said cap and comprising a tubular portion traversing said cap and opening into said bottle, and a conical portion rising from the upper end of said tubular portion with its upper end seated in said opening in said container top, an inverted frusto-conical guard having its larger upper end seated in the upper part of conical portion and formed with an opening in its smaller lower end, and means securing said guard in place in a manner to retain the liquid in the bottle when the stand is overturned to rest upon said rim and the liquid seeks a common level in said bottle, said tubular portion,and said conical portion.
in smoking stand comprising an outer container having a top having a rim extended beyond the sides of the container to support the container at an obtuse angle when overturned upon a supporting surface, said top being formed with an vopening, a quenching-fluid bottle seated in the lower part of said container, a closure cap for said bottle, means extending above said cap and opening into said bottle comprising a tubular portion traversing said cap and a conical portion rising from the upper end of said tubular portion with its upper end seated in said opening in said container top, an inverted frustoconical guard having its larger upper end seated in the upper part of said conical portion and formed with an opening in its smaller lower end, and means securing said guard in place in a A manner to retain the liquid in the bottle when the stand is overturned to rest upon said rim and the liquid seeks a common level in said bottle, said tubular portion, and said conical por tion, said closure cap being removably connected to said bottle, the'sald means extending above said cap and opening into said bottle and said guard being removable from the bottle as a unit.
