Description
April 6, 1948. w. EDWARDS 2,439,152.
ERASER fio DEn Filed Sept. 3, 1946 Jame/Wm Patented Apr. 6, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ERASER HOLDER Walter Edwards, Calgary, Alberta, Canada Application September 3, 1946, Serial No. 694,460
3 Claims.
The present invention relates to an eraser holder.
An object of the invention is to provide a hollow member which is open at its rear end and by means of which rubber eraser refills may be removably mounted in the hollow handle.
Another further object of the invention is to provide novel means for locking the inner end of the eraser in the holder to provide a rigid eonn'ection therebetween, and to prevent loss of the eraser from the holder.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying. drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the brush attached in position to one end of an eraser.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the eraser with its reinforcing tip for insertion in the hollow brush handle.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary side elevational View of the brush and eraser in attached position.
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on a line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a view in elevation of the inner end of the brush handle.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a hollow brush handle of rectangular shape in cross-section and having its side and end walls tapering, as shown at 6, to receive the bristles I of a brush therein, the bristles being secured in position in the handle in any suitable manner.
The rear end of the handle 5 is open and positioned adjacent the open end of the handle is a pin or rivet 8 which has its ends inserted through the side walls of the handle and upset, as shown at 9, to secure the pin in position therein.
The open end of the handle 5 is adapted to receive one end of an eraser which is formed at its inserted end with a longitudinally extending slot l l, the outer edges of the slot being flared or beveled, as shown at I2, to facilitate guiding of the pin 8 into the slot, and the inner endof the slot terminates in a rounded opening l3 in which the pin 8 is seated. The slot l I is of a width slightly less than the diameter of the pin 8 to form a constricted entrance for the pin and to prevent withdrawal of the eraser from the handle during its normal use.
The inner end of the eraser I0 is enclosed in a metal tip [4 having a slot I 5 formed in its sides and outer end to permit passage of the pin 8 into the slot ll of the eraser for seating in the opening l3 thereof. The metal tip I 4 reduces friction with the handle 5 when inserting the eraser l0 into the handle and when removing the eraser therefrom, and also reinforces the inner end of the eraser and protects the same during its insertion in the handle.
It is believed that the details of construction, manner of use and advantages of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing without further detailed explanation.
It is to be understood, however, that even though I have herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of my invention, the same is susceptible of certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described, and the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. An eraser holder comprising a hollow member, a transverse pin carried by the member, and an eraser having a slot in one end with the inner end of the slot terminating in an enlarged opening, said end of the eraser being adapted for insertion in the holder with the pin traveling through the slot and seated in said opening.
2. An eraser holder comprising a. hollow member, a transverse pin carried by the member, and an eraser having a restricted slot formed in one end with the inner end of the slot terminating in an enlarged opening, said end of the eraser being adapted for insertion in the holder with the pin passing through the slot and seated in said opening.
3. An eraser holder comprising a hollow member, a transverse pin carried by the member, an eraser having a restricted slot in one end with the inner end of the slot terminating in an enlarged opening, a rigid tip on said end of the eraser and having a slot therein exposing the first-named slot at the opening, said end of the eraser and tip being adapted for insertion in the holder with the pin passing through the slot of the eraser for seating in the opening thereof.
WALTER EDWARDS.
