Description
APril 1948. T. F. SAFFADY 2,439,059
ELECTRIC IRON Original Filed Dec. 6, 1943 INVENTOR.
A Horne v imam '7? SZf/uz,
Patented Apr. 6, 1948 iJNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ELECTRIC IRON Thomas F. Safiady, Detroit, Mich., assignor to Sav-Way Industries, Inc., Warren Township,
Macomb County, Mich.,
Michigan a corporation of 2 Claims. 1
This application, a division of my prior application Serial No. 513,050, fi-led December 6, 1943, which eventuated into Patent No. 2,382,101 on August 14, 1945, relates to electric irons and more particularly to means for illuminating the surface upon which the iron is moving and the area around the iron.
For an understanding of the electric iron herein disclosed, reference should be had to the appended drawing.
Fig. 1 shows an electric iron in side View.
Fig. 2 is a similar view in section.
Figs. 3 and 4 are sections on lines 3-3 and 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 1 shows the electric iron casing or cover 30 as provided with a slit 3! around its sides and nose in which is disposed a window 32 of any suitable transparent material, such as heat resistant glass, the edges of the window being formed to interlock with the edges of the sole plate 33 and of the cover 30 as indicated to prevent displacement and removal of the window.
Secured to the cover 30 by the screws 34 which fasten the cover, the heating plate 35, and the handle bracket 36 together, with such screws passing through insulators washers 31 and 38,
is a wiring harness consisting of a U shaped metallic strip 40 on which are insulatedly mounted lamp sockets 4| containing lamp bulbs 42, the lamp base tips being in electrical and mechanical contact with strip 40. It is preferred to use five lamps in series and connect the harness as a whole across the line represented by the contact prongs 43. One of these prongs is connected to the strip 40 through an exposed wire 44, and the other is connected to the various lamp socket shells 4| through exposed wires 45.
Light from the bulbs 42 will illuminate the area around the iron through the window 32.
Now having described the electric iron herein disclosed, reference should be had to the claims which follow.
I claim:
1. An electric iron comprising a base member including a sole plate and a heating element, a concave cover member and handle mount secured at its marginal edge to the edges of said base member and. comprising an upper portion of sheet metal and a complemental lower portion of translucent material forming three lower sides thereof, means securing said cover member upon said base member, and light sources mounted within said cover and disposed in the lateral plane of said translucent portion of said cover.
2. An electric iron comprising a base member including a sole plate and a heating element, a concave cover member and handle mount secured at its marginal edge to the edges of said base member and comprising an upper portion of sheet metal and a complemental lower portion of translucent material forming three lower sides thereof, means securing said cover member upon said base member, and light sources mounted on said securing means within said cover and disposed in the lateral plane of said translucent portion of said cover.
THOMAS F. SAFFADY.
