Description
R. J. MOTT HAIR CURLER March 30, 1948.
Filed Feb. 27, 1945 Patented Mar. 30, 1948 f RJITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useiul improvements in hair curlers of a type designed for use in applying cold permanent waves to the hair, and the invention has for its primary object to provide a collapsible hair-curling rod upon which the hair may be tightly curled or wound, and embodying means for collapsing the rod after the hair is wound thereon to provide a loosely wrapped curl while being set and which is essential to this type of permanent wave treatment.
More specifically, the invention comprises an elongated sectional hair-curling rod in which the sections of the red are loosely connected to each other at one end and providing a removable core for the rod to permit collapsing of the rod after the hair has been tightly wound thereon.
A further object of the invention is to provide a hair curler of this character which may be constructed of any suitable material which is not affected by the solution used in applying cold permanent waves to the hair.
A still further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is efiicient and reliable in use, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Further objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation, as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view showing the rod in its expanded position with the hair wound thereon.
Figure 2 is a similar view of another side of the rod.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof.
Figure 4 is a side elevational view of the removable core.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken substantially on a line 5-5 of Figure 2.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, where for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates the hair-curling rod generally which is of elongated, transversely rounded construction and formed of a pair of longitudinally split sections 6 and 1. One end of the sections 6 and 'l are connected by a cord .or similar flexible member 8 for loosely connecting the inner ends of the sections of the rod together, while the other ends of the sections of the rod are free from each other.
The opposed faces of the sections 6 and I are formed with longitudinally extending grooves 9 adapted for conformably receiving a cylindrical core Ii] which is of a length to project outwardly from the free ends of the sections 6 and l of the rod when the core is inserted between said sections, as will be apparent from an inspection of Figure 3 of the drawings.
The opposed faces of the sections 6 and l at their free ends are beveled, as indicated at H, to facilitate the insertion of the core l9 therebetween.
The rod 5 is gradually reduced in diameter toward the center portion thereof to provide a seat for facilitating winding of the hair I 2 thereon and for retaining the hair on the rod.
In using the device for curling the hair, the
core [0 is inserted between the sections 6 and I of the rod, and the hair then wound on the rod to form the curl, as indicated in Figure 2 of the drawings. After the hair has been tightly wound on the rod, the core I0 is then removed, thereby permitting the sections 6 and 1 of the rod to contract and supporting the curl loosely on the rod.
In view of the foregoing description, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in the art. A more detailed description thereof is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though I have shown and described a preferred embodiment of my invention, the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described, and the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. A hair curler comprising a curling surface formed of a plurality of longitudinally split sections arranged in spaced complemental relation with respect to one another, means connecting said sections together at an end thereof so as to permit expansile and contractile movement of said sections relative to each other, and a withdrawable member adapted to be inserted between said sections to cause expansile relative movement of said sections and maintain said sections in their spaced apart expansile movement position, and adapted upon being withdrawn to cause contractile relative movement of said sections to an extent such as to permit the return of said sections to their original spaced apart relation, said sections when in their maintained expansile movement position forming an exterior surface for the winding of strands of hair to be curled thereon and when upon completion of the contractile relative movement of said sections have the thus formed curl of hair loosely supported on said exterior surface.
2. A 'hair icurler..=comprising a curling surface formed of a plurality of longitudinally split sections arranged in spaced complemental relation with respect to one another, means connecting said sections together at an end thereof so $35 to permit expansile and contractile movement of said sections relative to each othenand-a'wi-thdrawable member embodying an elongated core adapted to be inserted between said sections to cause expansile relative movement of sam -sections and maintain said sections in their spaced .apart expansile movement position; sand-adapted upon being withdrawn to cause contractile n'ela- Jtive movement :of said .ssectionsitoranzextent "such as tomermitathe zreturnzo'f.said sections to :their original spaced :apart irelation, .said (sections when in. their :maintained cexpansile movement position forming an exterior surface for the winding of strands of hair to she curled thereon and when upon completion of the-contractile relativezmovement of said sections havethe thus :formedcurl of hair looselysupportedzon :said exterior z-surIace.
3. A'hair. curler comprising a curling :sur face formed ofza plurality of'longitudinallyisplit sections arranged in spaced complemental trelation with'respect .to one zanother;:each of said :sections )being lofrsemi=circular shape in O1flSS'i-S8Cti01l, means connecting-said 15661510115 :together ratzxan lozsaid sectionsitoian extent such as tofpermit the "return of said sectionstwth'eir original spaced apart relation, said sections when in their maintained expansile movement position forming an exterior surface for the winding of strands of hair to be curled thereon and when upon completion of the contractile relative movement of said. sections 'havetthe thus formed curl of hair loosely supported on said exterior surface.
