PORTABLE FENCE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,854, dated July 5, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL M. Ooor, of Girard, in the county of Macoupin and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Fences, of which the following is a specification.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of my improved fence. Fig. 2. is a sectional elevation of the same.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

The object of this invention is to facilitate the construction and erection of fences, and their transportation from place to place.

The invention consists in constructing the fence with panels having braces hinged to the upper parts of their uprights by pins for holdin g the panels erect, and having uprights and interposed spacing-blocks attached to the end upright of each panel to receive the end of an adjacent panel, as will be hereinafter fully described.

The fence is formed of panels about sixteen feet long. Each panel is formed by attaching longitudinal bars A to two, three, or more posts or upright bars, B. If desired, some of the longitudinal bars A can be replacedwith wires, but at least two rigid bars, A, should be used.

To the opposite sides of the upper part of each upright B are hinged the upper ends of two braces, O, by a pin, D, passing through the said braces and upright. The braces 0 should be of about the same length as the uprights B, which will give the said braces C such an inclination, when their lower ends rest upon the ground, that the said braces will firmly support the fence-panels and prevent them from being blown or pushed over. The braces 0 should work easily upon the pins D, so that the said braces will readily drop back to the ground should they be raised by the rubbing of hogs or other animals.

To one side of the end upright of each panel is bolted a side upright, E, blocks F being interposed between the said uprights E B- to keep them at the proper distance apart to receive the ends of the horizontal bars A, which project at one end of each panel.

With this construction the fence will be firmly supported in place, and will not be liable to be blown over by the wind or pushed over by animals.

With this construction the fence can be made in a shop, barn, or shed during rainy weather, when the farmer cannot work out of doors, and can be taken to the field when desired and set up.

With this construction also, by varying the length of the braces O the fence can be supported in a vertical position upon rough, uneven, or inclined ground.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Let.- ters Patent- A portable fence, constructed substantially as herein shown and described, consisting of the panels A B, the braces O, hinged to the upper parts of the panel-upright B by pins D, and the side uprights, E, and spacing-blocks F, attached to the side of an end upright, B, of a panel to receive the end of an adjacent panel, as set forth.
