SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,843, dated July 5, 1881.
Application filed May 2, 1881.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHAUNGEY B. Bosr- WICK, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny, and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Flows and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in that class of plows in which the cultivator-teeth are fixed on a revolving shaft; and it consistsin the combination and arrangement of the parts by which the shaft and other parts are operated, as more fully hereinafter specified.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved apparatus; Fig. 2, a top or plan view; Fig. 3, a detached view, in elevation, of one of the rods by means of which the plow-shaft is connected with the operating mechanism and guided in its travel. Fig. 4 represents a top view of the same; Fig. 5,a side elevation of the cultivator-teeth; Fig. 6, a top view thereof; Fig. 7, a rear view of the same; and Figs. 8,9,10, and 11, detached views of the chain-wheels and their details in different views and sections.
The letter Aindicates the main frame of the apparatus, B the steam boiler or generator, and G the steam-cylinders.
The letter D indicates the driving-wheels, and E a caster by means of which the apparatus is supported and upon which it travels.
The letters ff indicate the digging device, and G G rods connecting the digging device with the engine-shaft lt.
H H indicate loose chain-pulleys on the engine-shaft R, and F F similar pulleys mounted on the digger-sh aft, the last-mentioned pulleys being fixed.
The letters L L indicate two driver-axles meeting at the points I, where they are journaled in brackets l 1.
As represented in Figs. 1 and 2, the engineshaft is provided with a fixed cog-wheel, M, meshing into another fixed cog-wheel, I, on counter-shaft J, which latter, in turn, by means of the cog-wheels N N, imparts motion to the (No model.)
cog-wheels K K fixed on the axle, whenever the engine works and the clutches a n are brought in gear. Since each of the drivingwheels has its own axle, and a clutch is provided for each of the cog-wheels N N on the counter-shaft J, operating the cog-wheels K K on the driver-axles, either of the two drivin g-wheels maybe set in motion independent of the other, or both together, or they may both be idle, according to the gearing of the clutches.
The diggers are arranged to travel at much greater velocity than the driving-wheels, say in the ratio of twenty to one.
The digging device is set in motion by applying the clutches m m of the crank-shaft.
When the machine is traveling on a road, or at any other occasion where itis required to have the diggers lifted above ground, this latter device will be hoisted up by means of two chains, tt, winding around the small cylinders t t on the shaft S, which latter is turned by a wheel and worm indicated, respectively, by the letters 8 and r.
The worm-shaft 0 is operated from the counter-shaft J by the conic wheels pp, of which 11 is loosely fitted on the counter-shaft and set in motion by applying the clutch q.
The digging device rotates in the same direction as the drivers. These drivers are of peculiar construction, but as they form the subject-matter of a separate application further description of them in the present case is deemed unnecessary.
I The plow-shaft f is rotated by means of chains traveling over the studded wheels H and F. The chain-wheels are constructed in such manner that they may oscillate within certain limits to accommodate themselves to the cultivator-shaft f whenever this is not in a horizontal line. For this reason these chain-wheels are not fitted on their respective shafts directly, but each has two hubs, one of which forms a part of the wheel, While the other is a separate piece mounted upon the shafts f and B respectively. The wheel F, with its hub F on its inner surface, is concave to correspond with the covex periphery of the fixed hub F. The hub on the cran k-shaft R is loose, but provided with side projections entering the recesses in the clutch m.
In order that the chain-wheel shall rotate with the hub-F this latter is provided with two studs, F These studs consist of headed screw-bolts and are screwed into the hub F, as indicated in Figs. 9 and 10 of the drawings. The stud-heads enter into corresponding recesses in the wl1eel hub F which recesses are in width equal to the thickness of the studheads, but exceed them in length, as seen in Fig. 10, in order that the wheel may oscillate upon the hub F laterally, as seen in Fig. 11 By this combination of chain-wheel F, separate hub F, and studs F the chain-wheel is permitted to oscillate freely in an y direction whatever.
The lower end of each of the connectingrods G ends in a cylinder-head, G, within the journal-strap R and is fastened to the strap by a bolt, 9, passing through both branches of the strap and rod-head. The strap is broader than the rod-head, in order to allow the rod to swing laterally. The strap ends are connected by a pair of flat links, G and bolted to prevent it from opening. The journal brass next to the rod-head is rounded out to half a circle, to correspond with and to receive the cylindrical part of the rod-head. The adjustable brass is held against the driving-shaft journal by a set-screw, Pt, and jEtlDdllltS passing through the back of the strap. This construction affords both lateral and vertical oscillation of the connecting-rods. The other end of the rod, mounted on the plow-shaft, is provided with brasses spherically hollowed'out, corresponding with the ball-shaped journals of the plow-shaft ends. By the application of these journals the plowing roller may yield to the undulations of the surface of the ground without straining any of the parts of the apparatus.
The front end of the apparatus is supported, as before stated, by a caster, E, with the wheel 6. This caster swings around its pivot fastened to the main frame, and may be operated by any known mechanism, which it is not deemed necessary to further describe or show, as it has no particular bearing upon the present invention.
The plowing-tool proper, indicated by the letters ff consists of a steel shank with a segment socket, Q, by'which it is bolted to the cylinder Q, the pointf and the underground digger f which latter may be detached if more surface plowing is desired. The extreme end of the shank f widens out toward the rear, and is hollow. In the recess thus produced is fitted the underground tool f fastened by the screw f I The point is secured to the shank by the projection f, fitting into a corresponding recess in the shank, and held in proper position by the screw f In case the underground tool is not used a shorter screw is employed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with the digger-shaftf, the shaft S and connecting-chains, the cog s and worm r, the shaft 0 and bevelgearp, the loose bevel-gearp, and clutch g on shaft J, all arranged to operate substantially in the manner specified.
2. In combination with the shafts R and f, the connecting-rods G, jointed at g and G and the parts G and R whereby they are capable of yielding in two directions, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
3. In combination with the shaftf, the hubs F F and oscillating wheel F, the hub F bein g provided with recesses, into which project the studs F substantially as and for the purposes specified.
4. The plowing-tools consisting of shanks provided with segment sockets Q, and having the points f and sub-soil diggersf constructed and secured together substantially as specified.
