My invention relates to a lifting or elevating device, and while I will describe same in connection with a particular use, i. e., a limber for use with a field gun, my invention may .be used equally well for many other purposes, and is to be limited only .by the scope of the appended claim.
The average field gun mount usually comprises a wheeled support for the gun, and a trail, the trail being hooked onto the limber during travelling movement. The weight of the gun may often be quite substantial, and poses a problem not only in lifting same and securing it to the limber, but also in unhooking same from the limber and dropping it to the ground when it is desired to locate the gun in firing position.
The main object of my invention, therefore, is the provision of a device for lifting objects from the ground and locking same in elevated position.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a lifting device for use with a moving vehicle, which device is actuated by movement of the Vehicle.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a lifting device comprising a shaft, and an angulated lever, one arm of which is secured to the object to be lifted and the other arm is connected to the lifting force, said lever being pivotally mounted on the shaft.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a lifting device which comprises a support and a shaft thereon, a lever pivoted on the shaft, and having a movable connection between the shaft and lever, movement of which connection actuates the lever to raise or lower objects engaged thereby.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a lifting device which comprises a support and a shaft, a lever pivoted on the shaft and having a movable connection between the shaft and the lever, movement of the connection altering the leverage ratio between the lever and the shaft.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a lifting device of a shaft pivoted on a support and a lever pivoted on the shaft, and means on lthe shaft whereby the leverage ratio between the lever and the shaft may be readily altered.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a lifting device which comprises a wheeled mount, a shaft thereon, a collar secured to a moving vehicle, and a lever for securement to the object to be lifted and to the moving vehicle, the leverl being angulated and pivotally mounted on the shaft, and secured to the collar.
Still another object of my invention is the .pro-
2 vision of a lifting device which comprises a shaft, a lever pivoted thereonto, and sliding means to actuate the lever whereby to raise objects secured to the lever.
Still another object of my inventionV is the provision of a lifting device which may be quickly actuated to raise or lower objects towhich it may be secured.
Other and further objects of my invention will be obvious from the following description of an illustrative embodiment of my invention, and still others specifically referred to hereinbelow.

Reference number I0 indicates a eld gun having a .body I2 mounted on wheels I4, I4 at the front, and flat-bottomed, ground-gripping jack legs I6, I6 at the rear. These rear legs I6, I6 must,Y of course, be raised above the ground before the gun I0 may be shifted readily, on its wheels I4, I4, from one side to another. A suitable eye-piece or ring I8 is provided at the rear of chassis I2, mounted on a rigid extensionbracket assembly 20, whereby the gun may be engaged by the lifting and travelling mechanism. It is to be noted that bracket 20 and engaging ring I8 are spaced outwardly from, and in line, with chassis I2. Thus, lifting and moving forces applied to chassis I2 at ring I8 are directly transmitted to the rear end of the chassis through.

My lifting device comprises a metal shaft 3U mounted on a pair of wheels 32, 32 and braced'` by angulated rods or brackets 34, 36. When it is desired to drop the rear of chassis I2 onto the ground for firing the gun, the lorry 5 is stopped. Ring 80 maybe disengaged completely from the lift.
