APPLICATOR FOR BOWLING ALLEY FINISHES Filed May 24, 1945 IN VEN TOR.
Dido, Uiz/erbrinf Patented Mar. 23, 1948 F F I C E APPLICATOR FOR BdV/LING ALLEY FINISHES Victor Unterbrink, Ottawa, Ohio Application May 24, 1945, Serial No. 595,591
2 Claims.
My present invention, in its broad aspect, has to do with improvements in applicators for applying shellac, varnish, lacquer, plastic and the like to a floor or other surface, and it is especially useful in connection with applying the above, and other substances, to the bed of bowling alleys, and the like, where complete coverage is obtained in one operation, the applicator extending from gutter to gutter and the amount of material applied being determined by the use of different weights. More particularly, it is my purpose to prevent flow of the material to be applied from the ends of the applicator head so that uniform coverage is had without streaks, and in the case of bowling alleys, no material is permitted to flow into the gutters at the sides of the alley.
In attaining the above and other objects and advantages, I provide a handle and a relatively wide transverse head to which is attached at the ends thereof guard extensions which are at right angles to the head and directed toward the path of travel of the applicator.
The head and guard extensions have their undersurfaces covered with sheepskin or lambs wool, or any other suitable material, which acts as the distributing agent for the material to be applied to the floor or other surfaces.
The guard extensions permit carrying enough material ahead of the mop to insure even distribution without flow from or around the ends of the head which would cause uneven distribution and streaks. I provide means whereby the head is weighted, and the amount of weight adjusted to regulate the thickness of the coating applied.
Other and equally important objects and adthat changes in form, size, shape, materials, and construction and arrangement of parts is permissible and within the purview of my broad inventive concept, and the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawings, wherein I have illustrated a preferred form of my invention:
Figure 1 is a top plan view, and
Figure 2 is a side View.
In the drawings, wherein reference are used parts:
The numeral I designates the handle of my device, and 2 the transverse applicator head at the end of the handle. The handle is set at an angle to the head to facilitate dragging or pulling the head over a surface to which the material flowing in advance of the head is to be applied, in the direction of the arrow in Figures 1 and 2. I provide angular reinforcements 3 at each side of the handle to the head from a collar 4. Bolts 5 are provided for attachment to weights to control the thickness of the coating applied. At the ends of the head I mount, by means of bolts 6, guard extensions 1 which exlike characters of to designate like or similar tend at right angles or any other angle to the head in the direction of travel of the applicator. The ends of the extensions are beveled outwardly, as at 8.
The head 2 and guard extensions 7 have their undersurfaces covered with sheepskin or lambs wool or any other suitable material 9 which acts as the distributing agent for the material to be applied to the floor or other surfaces, as stated.
The head 2 and guard extensions I carry sufficient material It there-between to be applied to produce an even and proper coating and the extensions prevent flow of material above or around the ends which would cause streaks and the like.
Therefore, since the material flows ahead of the head and between the guard extensions and filters through the lambs wool or sheepskin on the undersurface of the head and extensions, a smooth, even coating is spread over the entire surface. The end extensions permit carrying enough material to insure proper and even application of the bowling alley in one operation.
From the foregoing, it is believed that the operation and advantages of my invention will be apparent, but it is again emphasized that interpretation of the scope of my invention should only be conclusive the subjoined claims.
I claim:
1. An applicator for surface coatings, comprising a handle, a transverse head on the handle having bolts for attaching weights, and extensions on the head REFERENCES CITED The following references are file of this patent:
