Description
(No Model.)
J. CURRAN. Heat Alarm.
No. 243,518. Patented June 28,1881.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
JAMES O URRAN, OF NEWv YORK, N. Y.
HEAT-ALARM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,518, dated June 28, 1881.
` Appncafion fiiea May 18,1881. (Nomad.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be-it known that I, JAMES CURRAN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Heat-Alarm Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improvement. Fig. 2 is an end elevalion ofthe same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention consists in constructing an apparatus for signaling changes of temperature with an expansion-rod to be inserted in the heated tank or Chamber, a compound lever for multiplying the changes in length of the eXpansion-rod, a connecting-rod, and a steam valve and Whistle connected with the heatingpipe, whereby changes in lengthof the expansion-rod will open the stcainivalve and cause the whistle to give a signal, as will be hereinafter fully described.
A represents a tank of water or other liquid, or a close chamber or other compartment, which is to be kept at a uniforln temperature.
To the bottom or fioor of the tank or chamber A is secured the lower end of a rod, B, of iron or other metal that Will expand and contract with changes of temperature. The upper end of the rod B is pivoted to the end of 30 a bar, C, which is hinged or fulcrumed to a f hanger, D, attached to the ceiling of the room in which the chamber or tank A is placed. The bar O passes through two hangers, E F, attaehed at their upper ends to the ceiling ofv the room'. The bar O is connected at its other end, by a pair of short connecting-bars, G, with the end of a bar, H, placed beneath and parallel with the bar C. ThebarH passes through the hangers E F, is fulcrumed to the hanger F, and its other end is connected, by a pair of short connecting-bars, I, with the end of a third bar, J, which is placed beneat-h and parallel with the bar H. The bar J passes through the hangers E F and is fulcrumed to the hanger 45 `E. The bars (J H J thus form a compound lever, and may have other similar bars connected with them, ifdesired, but generally three bars will be sufficient. The hangers E F are slotted to receive the bars (J H J, or each of the said hangers can be formed of two parallel bars. To the other end of the last bar, J, is pivoted the upper end of the rod K, the lower end of which is connected with the handle of the valve L, that admits steam to the steam-whistle M from the pipe N, that contains steam for heating the tank or chainber A. Several holes are formed in the bar J to receive the upper end of the rod K, for regnlatin g the amount of inovement of the said rod K.
With this construction changes of tempera- 60 ture in the tank or chamber A will cause the rod B to expand or contract, and the change of length of the said rod B is iucreased or multiplied by the compound lever O H J and opens the valve L, admitting steam to the whistle M, and giving a signal to the attendant that the heatin g apparatus requires attention.
Havin g thus fully described my inventioinl claim as new, and desire to secure by Ijetters Patent- 1. A heat-alarm apparatus constructed substantially as herein shown and (lescribed, consisting of the eXpansion-rod B, the compound lever G H J, the connecting-rod K, and the steam Valve and whistle L M, as set forth.
2. In a heat-alarm apparatus, the combination, with the heated tank or chamber A and the heating-pipe N, of the eXpansion-rod B, the compound lever O H J, the connecting-rod K, and the steam-valve L and whistle M, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby changes of temperature. in the said tank or Chamber will admit steam to the whistle and give a signal, as set forth.
JAS. OUR RAN.
